  1. I don't like half the people I know already. I'm pretty sure there's no one else I "should" know.

  2. I hope this is copypasta and you did not take the time to type that all. This is slashdot. We are productive workers here with only small amounts of time to slack of and read such long posts.

  3. Garbage on Our Obsession With Trailers Is Making Movies Worse (cnet.com) · · Score: 2

You sure it's not the garbage story lines that Hollywood keeps repeating that are making movies worse? How many times are they going to rewrite superhero story lines or the same boring "boy meets girl who he isn't really supposed to be in love with" plot line

  4. Re:Unimpressed by DocuSign's handling of the breac on Breach at DocuSign Led To Targeted Email Malware Campaign (krebsonsecurity.com) · · Score: 1

What companies SHOULD do in a case of a breach, and what actually happens is usually on complete opposite sides. It's quite sad that companies have not figured out to have set policies and quicker responses to any breach of customer data.

  5. Consumers Yes, Business No on 'Don't Tell People To Turn Off Windows Update, Just Don't' (troyhunt.com) · · Score: 1

Making a blanket statement like this is not really valid. I think for the average consumer desktop that searches the web, maybe plays some games and does some basic office stuff it is probably a good idea not to turn off updates. Telling a corporation that they absolutely need to update every time Microsoft releases something is probably a bad idea. The better advice would be for companies would be to educate themselves, hire people that know what they are doing, or hire outside contractors that are reputable and educated to handle their security. Simply saying "Update Windows" does not define a good security policy.

  6. Netflix can survive without the tech savvy on Netflix Says No To Unlocked Android Smartphones (androidpolice.com) · · Score: 2

My mother-in-law doesn't care what device she uses, nor does she know the difference between iOS and Android. If you had to have a conversation about a "rooted" device it would probably be painful. Netflix major push is it's own created content and major TV shows and producers. The want control over their content. This is watched by everyone and available on smart tv's, roku, Xbox, iPads, etc. Netflix can piss off some people who are using their devices in more technical ways and it will never touch their bottom line. This move will though make those producing the content happier because they can control the content. You can't really argue with a good business move.

  7. So by adding social media apps to their browser you would expect that they'd be targeting a younger crowd that is more involved in using such services. This might be me sounding old, but those that are younger that they would be targeting would also be less likely to download a browser other than what's on their phones already. A desktop version of this browser would totally miss the mark. What type of user would actually be interested in this?

  8. Windows 95 With USB Support on Microsoft Thinks USB-C Isn't Ready For the Mainstream (digitaltrends.com) · · Score: 1

This coming from the company that labeled their Windows 95 CD's with "with USB support". Why not support it. Is it mainstream? probably not. Is it in use, yes. My Nexus device charges through my HP laptop with a USB C connection. My HP Envy offers me options with my USB ports. Why not provide the consumer with a choice?

  9. I'll walk into my upper management and tell them I'm going to remove the 90 day requirement to change passwords. I'm sure that will go over well. I'd probably be asked about my sanity and they might question my skills as a network admin. This is great if you understand it. Upper management at many companies will not like this and have been "trained" to believe the rotating passwords is a must for a secure environment.

They might be really hurting themselves here. Continuing deals like this will make regulation pro government officials go on a rampage. The problem is with our current leadership this is probably seen as wonderful news. If they continue to act like the old phone companies, the government is going to step in eventually.

  11. How does this compare to Windows, iOS, and others. Are we bashing Android because we can without knowing how often Windows is attacked?. My guess is that Windows equals or exceeds this.

  12. Those who actually accept S as their OS won't care because they aren't the users downloading and installing other browsers. It's a bad move for Microsoft because it brings bad press (and possibly another anti-trust lawsuit). In the real world though the users sticking with S are the same users that click on the blue E anyway. While I would never support a decision like this. I really don't think it does much of anything to an already broken and restricted product.

  13. So it's an education version, but it will be available everywhere? I don't get it. That's not an EDU version of software. It's just another consumer confusing version of Windows 10. Unaware consumers walking into their local big box store will end up machines with S on it unaware of it's restrictions.

I don't get this. The entire bump in sales numbers seems to be based on a theory that business haven't upgraded yet, so they will next year. I don't own a Tesla vehicle, but I also will not buy one next year. How does that theory make sense at all?

The problem is that there are way too many ideas of what should go into a "mainstream" linux distro. Whether you want to hate Microsoft and Apple or not they make a OS, put things they want in it and tell the consumer that those are the options. Without a clear, single focus on what would make a mainstream distro work there will never be a distro that gets the support enough to become accepted by the masses.

Right from the post from Debian the XFCE team states that haven't seen an increase in their development. It is rather easy to pick the desktop during the install of Debian, so who really cares what the default is? If you are using Debian I'm going to assume you know how to switch the desktop environment during install or you are at least capable of typing "install XFCE instead of Gnome in Debian" into google.

I don't believe Ubuntu One was a major driving factor when people think of Ubuntu's name. If you were a fan of Ubuntu before they close down Ubuntu One I don't think it will severely impact your opinion of their distro.
