  1. Many people believe that only low- skilled workers will be replaced by machines. Doctors and lawyers being put out of work should be an eye opener for what is quickly heading our way. Yet absolutely no one is speaking about steps to alter society to accommodate the replacement of human workers. The old notions about retraining are obviously a joke. What is a doctor or lawyer supposed to retrain to do? Management positions are also in great danger.

  2. Apparently the government has asked Apple to undertake a very exhaustive and expensive effort to develop new software to enable breaking the encryption. In essence, the government wants this done gratis and the programmers would be paid by Apple and not the government. It might also mean hiring some very special engineers and perhaps mathematicians to do this work. Since when can the US government point a finger and demand work? It does strike me as being fascist. Further Apple would lose a great deal of business with people in other nations as they really don't want their phones wide open to US spy agencies.

  3. It has come to the point that many people now believe that only "certain people" are arrestable in the US. For example, find just one federal conviction last year for a man sleeping with an under- age prostitute. Yet twelve- year- olds do get arrested for prostitution but not the Johns.

  4. Dumb AS A Rock on UK Gov't Launches Public Consultation On Porn-Site Age Checks (bbc.co.uk) · · Score: 1

First a lot of fraud could be stopped if it was a crime to ask for a charge card for age verification. That being said, just how can age be verified at this point in time? Our world is awash in fraud. One dangerous fraud is the so-called safety sites for online dating. How easily can a violent person use another person's credentials to lure a girl to her death? When those supposed background checks take place all it takes is exposure to a stolen wallet to provide credentials. Those sites collect and sell information to businesses or they suddenly use those credentials to rob you blind. And who the heck decided that porn was so bad for kids anyway. Would any 13- year- old be healthy if they did not want to see some porn at times? Running about with starry- eyed innocence is not a blessing. It is a prescription for disaster.

  5. Wonderful on DARPA's Robot Ship Slated For April Unveiling (nationaldefensemagazine.org) · · Score: 4, Insightful

  6. Strategy on US Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia Has Died (theguardian.com) · · Score: 1

First, I am glad that Scalia is gone. His decisions were often a moral outrage. Next, the right wing is about to screw up big time. They intend to stop Obama from seating a new justice on the court. That is a really lousy idea for them. They have not looked forward. Bernie Sanders may well be the next president. So if they block Obama's candidate who would be somewhat conservative they will end up seating President Sanders candidate who will be far more liberal than Obama's candidate. In other words, no matter what, the right will end up with a new justice who is more liberal than what they want.

  8. Dead Wrong on Would You Bet Against Sex Robots? AI 'Could Leave Half Of World Unemployed' · · Score: 4, Insightful

Yes, machines will displace a lot more than half of all human employment rather soon. No, it will not cause harm to the economies of nations unless they want it to. Yes, people who do not get paid do not support businesses nor do they pay any taxes. Here is what must occur. ASll economic systems will be forced to drop their traditional economic and social beliefs. Socialism is the only possible form of government that can exist. People must receive paychecks from the government and they must be decent sized paychecks. Taxes will be paid by businesses and by the wealthy only. The real and absolute tipping point is when a company exists without any employees or human management or ownership. Profits from the business would simply be plowed back into the business to enable it to produce more or better products. Society can actually improve rather than decline through AI and advanced technology. But that qualifier is an acceptance of socialism as a fundamental requirement for human survival.

  9. LOVE THAT WEAPON on Debating a Ban On Autonomous Weapons (thebulletin.org) · · Score: 1

The US does not have a population large enough to fight a traditional war against nations like China who can arm many millions of soldiers. We would be in the position of having to go to nuclear, germ or gas warfare in a land war with China and some other nations as well. The very nature of that kind of war would mean the death of many millions of noncombatants. It would also mean the slaughter of vast numbers of American troops and a devastation of our economy. But autonomous and drone types of weapons can take out specific targets with far less slaughter of innocents. They can also be quite intelligent and do things like only respond to people carrying a weapon. They can also give us ways of avoiding the limits of foreign powers. For example, there are nations that will not allow any armed ship to dock in their ports. Drones could transfer to a vessel standing near- by and thus allow our ships to dock and still have vast protection, such that any enemy attack would result in a high- speed attack with immediate consequences, for any enemy attacks upon our ships in port.

Heck, I also dislike the republican party. Crimes by the republican party define it as an ongoing criminal enterprise in my opinion. So can they sue me?

  17. Terrorism may be the last reason we need deep surveillance. Look at what happens when we have video of cops in action. Suddenly it becomes evident that much of the negative information that we have had in the past was true about cops activities. Surveillance can increase our freedoms. I shudder to think how much crime can be detected if we really start applying technology to our daily lives. For example, people lie to get medical and life insurance and they even lie to their doctors. What if your doctor could easily view all the groceries you or your family purchases. The dope industry could also take a huge hit if electronic money becomes the standard. It becomes hard to buy dope as it shows as a strange expense on your debit or credit card, Tax evasion could be eliminated. Also, salaries could be scanned as a public service as some employers cheat on payrolls. And imagine car insurance if your actions while driving are recorded and automatically notify your insurance agency of speeding, running red lights, or mileage other than what you report at purchase time. Technology could eliminate most of the crime in America if we encourage surveillance and data mining for law enforcement. Even a requirement to carry a good, national ID that would trigger alerts if a person did not have a valid identity or failed to have their card with them at all times. How about auto facial recognition at ATM machines? The wrong person could never make a withdrawal. This issue is not a one- way issue. Our freedom could actually increase due to surveillance and data analysis. Perhaps we should embrace rather than resist it.

When crooks have no way to transfer or hold money they tend to resort to either hiding it in a suitcase of burying it in the ground. There are certain motels in Florida that have always catered to guys with money in suitcases. You know how it is. You get rich in New Jersey and when it gets too hot with the cops you head for Florida and try to live in a motel that has extra security as that million bucks in your suitcase does make you a target. And there are also people with suitcases full of cash waiting for their dope to be delivered as well. Making it more difficult to hide money or wealth is a pretty wonderful goal.

  25. The circumstance appears to be that we can advance technology faster than we can advance technology to secure the products of progress. So how do we get security out front, instead of releasing devices and then trying to figure out how to secure them? I suggest that part of the problem rests in having that human link to the drones. If we used technology similar to what exists in the Cruise missiles it becomes a launch it and leave it alone type of device instead of needing humans to continue its mission.
