I'll second this. I recently moved into an office where one whole wall is a window (is that an oxymoron?), and I'm in Orlando, Florida. Needless to say, the sun can be pretty intense (except every afternoon when it rains... I'm starting to mold here).
Anyway, one of the first things I asked for was a monitor hood. It's made all the difference in the world. I can still code and keep the shades open, so I can watch the babes, er, scenery every now and then... Whoops, here comes some scenery now. Gotta go...

Seriously, where's the evidence of this? Not a single one of the links in the submission mentions a damn thing about it.
Do the/. editors ever do a single bit of checking to see if a story is factual? If not, I've got quite a few articles involving politicians and livestock I've been wanting to submit...
You would almost certainly never see it replace OS/390 or z/OS. It might, however, be an option to run on an LPAR (logical partition) or as a guest under IBM's VM, which allows other operating systems to run beneath it.
It's doubtful, though. IBM has officially blessed Linux for mainframes, and it's unlikely that any organization would give up the support they can get for that to run *BSD, regardless of the merits.
My wife now has a laptop with a connection by her favorite chair. She hardly ever gets more than a few feet from there now. I'm afraid to mention wireless to her... she'd probably take it to the bathroom, too.
I've been in computers 20+ years, and worked with all sorts of different platforms and languages. For some reason, there are more women who program in COBOL than in any other language.
You guys in the ultra-geeky C++ shops, look around. What's the ratio of males to females? In most COBOL shops, it's equitable. I've even worked in places where there were more women than men.
I've recently interviewed for a job elsewhere in my organization where I'd be swapping mostly COBOL and a little Java for full-time Java, SOAP, etc. Sounds like a much cooler job... but this group is off in another building, and there's only one woman. Don't get me wrong, I'm happily married... but I like having women around.
So what if all the women will look like Grace Hopper soon? I'll look like Hume Cronyn.
You're making the assumption that such a technology would only be used to stop behaviors we (almost) all agree are bad, such as murder. But it wouldn't be very long before the Powers That Be would start to apply it to anything that didn't fit their personal agenda.
First would come sterilization of those who took drugs or looked at pr0n. Next comes those who are too liberal, or too conservative. Then those who ever voted for the other party, or who don't worship the same God. Finally comes execution of those who favor baptism by sprinkling rather than dunking.

Okay, so I perceived something that did not come in a normal manner... that is, through one or more of my five senses.
Isn't that the definition of Extra-Sensory Perception?
It might be quantum physics, as the other poster suggested. It might be time travelers sending me telepathic messages about something that's about to happen. (That was a joke, for the humor-impaired.)
The point is, we have to call it something. Might as well be ESP.
Since I'm reading./, that implies I have an interest in, and know something about, science and technology. I'd guess I know more about science than the average Joe on the street, though not as much as some of the rocket scientists here.
But I do believe in ESP, 'cause I've experienced it. Certainly not commonly, and definitely not in any controllable fashion, but it's happened.
Does that mean I think Miss Cleo can tell all about me over the phone, or that Uri Geller can bend spoons with his mind? No.
But I'd guess that the majority of people have experienced something psychic at some point in their lives... well, 60% of us anyway...:-)
Yes, this article states the obvious... but since we're on the subject...
If you want to compress your JPEG's but don't have Paint Shop Pro, go to the JPEG Wizard site. It has an online utility that lets you see different levels of compression on your picture, so you can pick the one that is smallest that still looks good enough.
They didn't do anything with the old apps. That's what I meant by "logical partition". You essentially create an address space that thinks it's its own machine, and can run a different OS.
The old stuff still runs without modification, albeit with slightly less resources.
It would be overkill if they were using the mainframe only for this. But they already had a mainframe. With these machines, you can create a logical partition and run Linux in it. That's what they're doing... just taking a few resouces away from their regular system.
A friend who used to work on Burroughs equipment told me he once that message.
I like the 'possible' part. (It could be neither! Quantum physics no doubt involved!)
What's really scary is I understood most of the message that prompted this article...

Good thinking! If you'd asked about the books first, they'd be obsolete by next weekend!

IBM's Java stuff already works so much better than Sun's. Ever seen the benchmarks of their JVM vs. the original? Plus Jikes, VisualAge, etc. etc.
Why would they buy Sun when they'd have to retrain all their programmers?
