Erm, wrong. The new iPods are lacking a Firewire cable. That's all. The functionality is still there. It's a cost-cutting measure, USB 2.0 is ubiquitous and therefore they include that cable. You want to connect with Firewire, no problem, just get the FW cable (and/or dock)

Yes it did. Initially it didn't but then someone had the bright idea of asking the regulat passengers how much they thought they were paying (these being the CEOs etc, not the pencil-pushers who booked the flights....) and they all mentioned amounts 2-3 times what they/their companies were being charged. So BA raised the cost of the flights by 2-3 times. They also started running gift flights which would go out over the Atlantic, go supersonic, pop champagne and then head home. This combination made the Concorde profitable.

Now it's probable that had BA etc had to shoulder the full cost of designing and building the thing, they'd never have made anything.....

In the late eighties there was a recession in the UK and this reduced the number of regular passengers and Concorde started becoming less viable. The combination of 9-11, the French Concorde explosion and general world angst finally killed it.

But in the Eighties it made BA and Air France lots of cash.

I just made an entry for /dev/sda1 in /etc/fstab, plugged it into my laptop and coppied my music to it with Konqueror by sftp from my cable box.

And there's your problem, the average user has NO IDEA what you are talking about, they don't know what an OGG is, they have't a clue about DRM and THEY DON'T CARE.

That's why all these extra features are meningless, the number of people who use them is insignificant. There's a reason why Nokia et al produce phones which only have a subset of the features available - the average user only wants those features.

The iPod is designed to appeal to the majority of users, the 5% at the end of the curve who want OGG playing Linux devices that also make the coffee wirelessly whilst wardriving to work are not their problem.

I already have an iPod and I already use iTunes and I am perfectly happy with both. Plus, Apple is perceived to be "cool" (at the moment) whereas Microsoft is "uncool", so I can't see people switching. Especially whilst the iPod remains a must-have amongst the musicians and the music industry as a whole.

Were it a simple case of choosing one or the other then I could see Microsoft winning this one easily but as long as the iPod remains cool, Apple will remain the market leader here.

Where was I. Slashdot has far more "up themselves" teenaged geeky nerds than you will get anywhere outside a Maths and Star Trek convention. Those people will, as is natural at 16 (and on to 15 or so) believe they are the dogs bollocks and that they are better than everyone else.

However if you read the more mature, legible, sensible, well-thought-out, adult posts - which are probably from those of us who have "been there, done that" as it were, you'll realise that most of us (and I mean the human race in general) feel alienated, differently clever (ooh, so politically correct) or whatever at some point in our lives.

For example at school I felt "superior" to most people around me. As an undergrad I realised what a twat I have been at school and that some people might actually be almost as intelligent as me (obvioujsly not quite as intelligent as their exam results were better :). When researching my masters I could look back and see what an immature person I had been as an undergrad and how my attitude towards people I felt were slower than me, or generally less intelligent (i.e. everyone) was a load of bullshit. I still harboured a secret knowledge that I was better than all the other people on the course.

Then it came to my PhD - I was 25, I had travelled the world, lived away from home since I was 18 and I was much more secure and mature. I could look back on even my masters and see how conceited I was at 22! I was surrounded by people of the same intelligence as me - but in differen ways - which is why we were studying different topics! I felt properly grown-up at last and was over all the stupid angst and self-righteous feelings as before.

Now I'm over 30 and I can look back and see that even at 25 I had a lot of growing left to do. I am sure that at 40 I will feel the same way .....

To summarise. get over it :) Grow up. It might take 20 years but the journey is worth it.
