...proof that Tesla has wrongly convinced drivers their cars' "autopilot" function really could perform fully autonomous driving...

Nobody has been "wrongly" convinced of anything. The "autopilot" function did indeed perform fully autonomous driving with a sleeping driver for over seven miles before stopping gracefully when a vehicle slowed down in front of it. What's the deal? Maybe it cannot perform the most complex driving manoeuvres expected from driving in a complex city environment, but it did manage the highway just fine.

This exhausted (or intoxicated) sleeping driver could have caused an accident that would have surely led to nasty injuries or death for himself or others on the highway that day. So instead of having a stupid luddite headline pointing this in such a negative light, we should be grateful for having the fucking autopilot in the first place. One or more lives were probably saved in this incident by it.

I was reading in Ars Technica an article about Russian spies hacking athlete's doping test results. In the comment section someone I suspect to be a Russian troll was expressing mild outrage at the fact that Ars ran an article on that subject but hadn't yet mentioned anything about the Chinese chip hacking conspiracy, linking to the Bloomberg article. Both the quasi-science-fiction Bloomberg article allegations and the circumstances that led me to read it make me suspicious that it is probably fabricated. I don't think that Bloomberg journalists lied, but I consider it likely that they were fed false information that ended up in that article.

  14. Same as in Venezuela on Labor Board Says Google Could Fire James Damore For Anti-Diversity Memo (theverge.com) · · Score: 4, Interesting

I saw this happen in Venezuela: first the ideologues pump their ideology for years, get people to fall in love with their romantic left-wing utopia where human nature dosn't really exist and is a product of society and can and changed at will with enough enthusiasm and—if that doesn't work—good old-fashioned repression. As long as government is not on board the "harmelss" ideas spread and do not cause that much damage. Eventually authorities are elected that are ideologically compromised and we end up with an authoritarian left-wing dictatorship.

To deny human nature and the findings of science is to deny ourselves understanding that can lead to improvement of our collective quality of life. But if we prefer to be sedated into ideology and expect science to always reinforce our already-established value systems we will just deepen our miseries and do a disservice to ourselves and future generations.

I read Damore's memo. There is nothing there that disagrees with modern psychology. The findings he refers to have been discovered by psychologists and sociologists from prestigious institutions using sound methodologies. We better accept the information that science gives us and decide how we'll organise incorporating rather than denying the uncomfortable bits. Science doesn't tell us how to be moral, it just tells us what is. It is up to us to find meaning and fairness within the context of what is, and not fall into the trap of thinking that what ought to be is what is. The Universe doesn't need to follow our moral convictions du-jour.

He is dangerous, and he'll still be dangerous when released from prison. He should remain under surveillance afterwards. These people do not think like regular people do. No mate, this is all conspiracy theory. Venezuela is walking the same worn path that all communisms have walked. First it starts with the idea that you will create a new sort of man: the socialist man, a mythical human that is no longer interested in its own well-being or individual achievement. This is accompanied by mass expropriation of private companies, you know, to give them to the people. Then officials start shouting accusations of economic conspiracy when a large chunk of people with wealth and businesses decide that this project clashes with their values and interests, and leave. Capital controls are subsequently enforced to prevent the remaining wealth from leaving the country. Price controls are put in place for staples and other basic products because the unemployed population has become so impoverished that they can no longer afford them at market prices. Scarcity ensues. People who complain and blame the communist regime for the deteriorating situation are accused of working with the enemy to destabilise the country, prosecuted, imprisoned or killed because they are not walking the Party line. I was there, I saw all of this happen. You blaming the CIA is just regular American conspiracy paranoia, nothing more.
