I've seen MANY lives destroyed by one person, and I'm not just referring to one case. You can believe your 5% and justify all you want. You can put your fingers in your ears and hum away. A very small portion of the population creates an undue burden on the vast majority of the population due to a substance. Society is there for the benefit of the many so apply the 80/20 rule. Remove the 20% of the most harmful substances and realize 80% of the benefit. Leave the other 80% of harmful substances be and then put the rest of the money towards development. By any unbiased study narcotics easily belong to that 80% and as you so succinctly put it so does alcohol but we're past that, prohibition, and the irresponsible behavior of it kills more people than most want to admit.

It's not about the users. The users typically become addicted to whatever substance they are using. It's those that control the supply, they control the users. In other words, it's power. No matter what side you look at..

It boils down to power and who is going to wield that power. You find a way to decouple power from narcotics and then you can have a free society in which people make their own choice. In any other situation the lever of addiction will be pulled to the greatest effect to line the pockets of the one who's hand is on that lever. More often than not, the hand on the lever is in reality placed on a gun with somebody else having to deal with the receiving end. Police officer, drug lord or middle man; they are all fighting for that power.

In any case the person consuming the narcotic is giving power to somebody. The addiction drives them to get it however they can which means that power goes indiscriminately to whoever provides the quickest/cheapest fix. The casual user is capable of making more informed decision on how they obtain but it still eventually gets to a drug lord; exception being home grown stuff, which is a very small portion of the opiate trade.

To say the least I'm tired of the mantra "have you ever seen a dude high on some drug fighting." Set aside PHP for a moment and then have you ever seen some dude wanting to get high fighting, stealing, murdering...? If you haven't just open a news paper of your nearest metropolitan area.

Grammer and Spelling Nazis beware, I'm the worlds worst speller and terrible with grammer.

Aspergers is a spectrum disorder, meaning you can have it lightly in one symptom, not at all in another symptom, and have it strongly in another symptom.

You must first "qualify" by these diagnostic criteria

    http://www.aspergers.com/aspcrit.htm

There is not one that I didn't qualify. Also I have sensory cross over, I "see sound and hear light" all the time. Differnt sounds produce differnt noice in my vision and differnt colors produce differnt pitch sounds in my ears.

It is difficult to diagnose due to the later emmergance of the symptomms over autisim or *REAL* ADHD. Also it is coupled with high intelligence (Hans Asperger had high intelligence listed as a pre-requesit to be diagnosed) This gives idiot parents the ability to fit two needs; 1. My child is very intelligent, see this diagnosis from the High Priest^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^HDoctor, 2. Oh poor me, my child is disabled and needs every med (secrectly joyus that they don't have to deal with the little hellion they've created; their out being doping them up and giving themselves the pat on the back that it is not their fault littly Jonny has Aspergers or whatever) again they show the diagnosis from the High Priest to reinforce their denail.

Anybody doing some serious research finds that it is a mild disability that can create some pretty signifigant complications if the enviornment is not proper, i.e. parents.

I was diagnosed when I was 26, 4 years after I got married. I'm 32 now, married 10, and I can say one thing. The diagnosis changed everything. First I was relieved that most of the areas of my life were a little different because I'm a little different and not just in my head. Second I became angry because everybody missed it, including my parents and myself. Thrid I became a bit down on my self (depression too hard a term to describe what was going on). Forth I started to slip in many of the areas of my life because I had a disability and that allowed me to slip, i.e. an execuse to slack off. Fith I realized I lived 26 years of my life not knowing, an execuse was stupid at this point and really took a look at what it meant, I read voraciously on the subject and got a life coach that had an amazing ability to intutivly get in my head and pull out things. It was basicaly mild behavior modification therapy. I leared what were my triggers for causing bad episodes and to notice the stages before things got bad. My productivity skyrockted by over 600%, and that's extremly concervative and tracked over a period of 3 years.

I've never been on any meds except for ritalin for a few weeks, the stuff sucks bad. I've found a combination of vitamins and herbs that make a world of difference, the primary being bitter orange extract combined with ginko. Alone they both do squat. I've changed my diet quite a bit finding that processed sugar and dairy can cause seroius issues with irritation which triggers many other symptoms.

Each person is differnt and each journy of discovery will be differnt, meaning there is no magic cure all. Parents need to employ a bit of creativity to better raise their children, basicaly they need to spend time with their children. Adults need to employ creativity to deal with the issues, and they need to learn as much as they can. "Thinking in Pictures" by Temple Granden seriously helped me. Much of what was in the book described me. I'd read a portion of the book to my Wife, who was in the other room, she had to ask, "Are you describing yourself or reading the book?" So the last thing is you need a *SAFE* relationship that you can bounce ideas around of your behavior and experiences, in which you can brainstorm how to address the issues that come from them to better function as a human being.

I've reached a point in my life that nobody notices that I have anything different about me, unless I'm having a bad day. In which case

This analogy really irks me. I agree the public fire departments work much better than the private fire departments we've had in the past. The reason this works is that it's organized on a more local level than federal level. So when has the federal government of the United States ever done anything well in public social reform? Social Security is going to go broke due to the boomers entering retirement after the government raided it's coffers, it's full of treasuries now! There are many other issues with Social Security such as it was promised to be voluntary, is it now? Sounds familiar with the public option, why trust the government to keep it optional when they reneged on the only other close example we have. We expect the feds to do better with our health than our retirement? Even if they did as well as with SS, I'd go for the crap of the private system.

Another question about the public option... Why does the public sector receive a private option and they are trying to push a public option on the private sector? This seems a bit reversed to me. Either put us (the public) on their plan, or put them on our plan!

Anyway that's just a few small points I have in regard to the public option. Neither the private option nor the public are good, but I don't trust the federal government to do as they say with social reform as they have not done so in the past.

I still stink from time to time, and my wife reminds me and I take a shower... When I'm going to have a meeting with "normal" people I make sure I'm showered 2-3 hours before the meeting and had a good day of rest before.

I have been diagnosed, informally, with Aspergers. I'm 27 now and only discovered Aspergers 3 months ago. It has been an amazing time! For so long I was worried why I didn't feel the same as everybody else, and other times was overwhelmed with feeling when everybody else didn't even perceive what is going on.

I have been working with somebody with 15 years of experience in identifying those with Aspergers, he is a consultant for many school districts. The reason the diagnosis is informal is that I have not been to a doctor yet for him to point a finger and say "You have Aspergers"

Now that I have been all over the map in my posting I will start with the important part... Too many times I have failed to intuitively identify emotion being expressed by others. In elementary school this led to being bullied even by the "nerds." I was the theta wolf so to speak. This was at least until I took Tai-Kwan-Do, to defend my self from the increasing forms of violence. The principal was a moron and would watch the fights from his office. Anyway this was an incredible experience for me because the intense training helped greatly with motor coordination. Which I will now dove tail into ... Everything in my life has been extremely difficult, except the areas that I was interested in. My progression was first bugs, reptiles, dinosaurs. Then Astronomy, to a degree that scared everybody around me, I knew incredible detail about other galaxies at the age of 11, and it was all I would talk about. Then my parents got a PC when I was 13, which changed my life for ever. Only these 3 things have been "easy". Computers being the easiest. I got my first contract at $35/hour+perdiem for a company doing work for TRANE heating and cooling, when I was 19. This was not chump change! It only expanded from there, and I have never been without computer work, not for my social ability, but what has been described to me as an "insane" ability to solve problems in the context of the logical pragmatic languages expressed in computer languages such as c/c++.

Now other things that have hampered my development have been the fact that I do not recognize people by their facial features. I recognize people mainly by their voice ( I have scared people by identifying what Klingons were used over and over again because of their voice, other aliens too and other shows, which the identification was across shows as well ), secondly by their mannerisms, by the way the hold their head, the way the slouch their shoulders, they way the hold their elbows from their body, their gait as they walk and the bob of their head as they walk. I freaked a friend out one time by identifying somebody by their neck. It was a shot of their neck in some movie I forget. We have a PVR and I paused it and said who is was, not by their name but by what movies/shows they acted in. Only their neck was showing so there were no other attributes. Thirdly I identify by their hair ears and chin/neck. I did horrible in history because of face/name association. I could tell you everything about the events except the people's names.

Now to get back to my agreement with your statement. Throughout my life I've held to the belief that there is a "space" between stimulus and response. In this space we make a choice and our lives are created by that choice. Nurture/Nature (Environment/Genes) influence that space, but an extremely few adults do not have the ability to choose in that space, as partially evidenced by autistics writing books and leading productive lives. The discovery of Aspergers has lead me to a quest to understand and with that understanding extrapolate techniques to apply to my life.
