  1. Yes, played like a fiddle on Egypt Arrests More Bloggers · · Score: 1

    So, to summarize your argument,

    This guy:
Has a screenname that happens to also be part of the name of someone America killed, as confirmed by "a quick check"
Is a socialist, as confirmed by "a quick check"
Is being persecuted for criticizing the "secular state" of Egypt

ergo, he's part of some propaganda machine seeking to destroy Western culture on behalf of a socialist agenda.

Nevermind the fact that he's being detained without any given reason. Nevermind that Al-Azhar is very much not a secular institution.

Clearly, free speech has gone too far. We wouldn't want to engage the wrath of those big bad socialists by standing up for this rabble rouser!

    Wii Console, $250
Six games at fifty bucks a piece, $300

So, that magazine subscription and 1 year product replacement plan would come out to around $90. WHAT A DEAL!

  3. Whose claims do we believe? on Battlefield 2142 to Bundle Spyware? · · Score: 1

Do we believe the developers preaching to their choir at their message boards, where they aren't bound by any law to speak truthfully about their game? Their claim is that this software is small and limited to in-game ads.

    or

Do we believe the hard-copy legal disclaimer that is included in every copy of the game (except for online purchases) that tells you that you are agreeing to be spied on just by having this game on an internet-connected computer?

Frankly, regardless of this current software's extent, the idea that this software effectively gives legal consent to do the kind of spying outlined in that disclaimer is enough to keep me (and most sane people) from buying this game.

  4. The Sword - Freya on Guitar Hero 2 Official Set List Released · · Score: 2, Informative

Not many people have heard of the small band from Austin, The Sword. They are a truly excellent band, and their driving riffs make them perfect for a game like Guitar Hero.

They sound like early Black Sabbath, but with a Celtic/Viking fantasy theme. And their live act is damn near flawless. They're on tour right now, and if they play anywhere near you, I highly recommend seeing them now while they're still playing smaller venues.

I'm really impressed that they were able to get into something as big as Guitar Hero 2. I have a feeling Freya is going to be a beast to play.

  5. For every one good employee, on Life Behind The Counter · · Score: 1

there are ten who don't know a decent game from Daikatana.

One time I was sarcastically joking with a salesman at my local store about how "great" JAWS Unleashed looked. His clueless partner, sensing a sale like blood in the water sidles up next to me and pours it on thick. He even mentioned the glowing review Gamespot gave it, with an unabashed lack of irony.

Some of the pure bullshit I hear them tell uniformed customers amazes me. For instance, salesmen who tell customers that all their old XBox games will play on a 360 (or GB games on a DS).

Luckily, the more I go in there, the more they recognize me and leave me alone. I suppose knowing your customers is pretty important when you don't know your products.
The sad thing is that that one employee who's well informed and honest is actively discouraged by management from saying anything that would dissuade a potential sale, and the clueless ones are encouraged to foist as many crap "special offers" onto customers as possible.

  6. heh on Quantum Leaps in RPGs · · Score: 1

    that's pretty good.

Morrowind and Daggerfall both had their share of showstopping bugs, but that didn't stop them from being incredible games. The same can be said for Fallout and much of the Ultima series.

Gotta break a few eggs to make an omelet and whatnot.

  7. Ranking games like this is pointless on Quantum Leaps in RPGs · · Score: 4, Insightful

Why is it that every time we talk about the influence of groundbreaking games (and films too, I suppose), more often than not they're shoehorned into some sort of subjective pecking order?

You'll never see "Top 10 Paintings of the Rennaisance", but that hasn't kept art critics and historians from debating their merits and influence through the years.

Every game on that list, and quite a few others, deserves to be there. But why waste time quibbling about rank? When you make lists like this, people are bound to concentrate more on a game's place rather than the content of the criticism or praise. These games stand on their own as great works, or they wouldn't be there at all.

It all reminds me of those silly GameFAQ's character battles.

And, for my money, Daggerfall and Morrowind deserve to be on there every bit as much as Oblivion. Not to mention NetHack and Diablo.

  8. Thanks for your opinion! on How Important is Gears of War for Microsoft? · · Score: 1

It's great that you speak for the gaming community as a whole. Now that we know you don't care about Bioshock, which won three out of four Best Game of E3 awards from the major gaming sites (and runner up on that fourth one), we can move on and lavish praise on the shiny JRPG that presents an effeminite boy protagonist who mighty morphs into a giant robot! Clearly this is a new frontier in gaming!

With Sager you're pretty much on your own, getting tech support from community message boards and such.

So it's probably not worth $400-1250, but it's more than just a spiffy coat of paint.

  20. Why you should care on New Eternal Darkness Titles Promised · · Score: 5, Informative

Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem is one of the best games for the Gamecube, putting it squarely among the top games of this ending generation.

You could call it a "survival horror" and leave it at that, but it hardly seems much like Silent Hill or Resident Evil. In those games, the fear is created by the big scary monster in the next room. You can eventually desensitize yourself to that kind of fear by playing on the assumption that there's a monster around every corner.

In Eternal Darkness the fear is created by the sense that you are losing your mind. There are hundreds of little tricks the game uses to mess with your mind, and they're so varied and frequent that at least a few of them will catch even the most hardened player off guard.

On top of the sanity system, the game has a fantastic atmosphere that's Lovecraft-inspired but spans many different eras in human history. You'll play in Ancient Persia, Medieval Europe, 1950's America- and each time as a different (and likely doomed) protagonist.

There's also some fairly complex (in console terms) magic and combat systems.

If you own a Gamecube, this game is very much worth playing (or even owning). It can easily be found used for under $10.

This is perhaps the dumbest thing ever written on Slashdot. The depth of your ignorance is matched only by its breadth. The one topic on which you come close to expressing some level of reasonable expertise, EVE Online, is overshadowed by your obvious contempt for a wide swath of human existence which you seem determined to not understand.

  24. I personally miss Next Generation on The State Of U.S. Videogame Magazines · · Score: 2, Insightful

Next Generation magazine was the first publication to make me see our dinky little hobby as a legitimate medium for expression. Until that point, magazines were the same as they are now, focusing on pimping the latest and greatest and also giving hints and cheat codes.

Then Next Generation hit the scene, not just talking about games, but about the ideas behind games. And the people who had those ideas.

The Shigeru Miyamoto of Nintendo Power was a cartoon character who's name happened to get associated with Zelda and Mario. The Shigeru Miyamoto of Next Generation was a brilliant gamesmith, a master of the art and craft of games. Richard Garriot wasn't just some nerd making D&D clones, he was a philosopher exploring ethics in this wonderful new and interactive medium.

The topic of graphics in other magazines had some base instinctive appeal (OMGz polyg0nz!). Graphics in Next Generation were high art at the bleeding edge of technology.

In short, Next Generation magazine made me the gamer I am today. Or rather, it didn't make me a gamer, it helped me understand *why* I'm a gamer. And it did so with top-notch production values and a high quality presentation.

I'll never forgive IGN for watering it down and then turning it into NextGen->DailyRadar->kaput.
