  1. Re:Not ready for "enterprise." on Can Apple Penetrate the Corporation? · · Score: 1

Where is the centralized management? How do I, as the IT Admin, lock down a user's rights on a Macintosh without having to log in locally? How does someone, with only a network login, log onto a Mac for the first time without the admin visiting the box and setting them up first?

When the machine is first setup, you connect it to OpenDirectory. From then on, any network user can sit down and log into the machine. Their home directory is mounted and they are good to go. This does not require any administrator to visit any machine.

How do I create a central policy the defines the firewall settings on OS-X? How do I push that to all the workstations? How do I centrally change the local admin password on all the workstations without logging in locally or addressing each box individually?

Apple Remote Desktop is your friend. Between that and Workgroup Manager, you can control every Mac on your network without having to physically visit them. You can automate any task you would like to do to the Macs.

What's wrong with the computer lab model? It's cheaper because desktops are almost always cheaper than comparably-equipped notebooks. Besides, childhood obesity in the U.S. is at staggering levels - a short walk to a lab won't hurt.

Research in West Virgina has shown that computers in the classroom are better than in computer labs. Students perform better and get more computer time.

Besides, in the US you have this wonderful law so that you have to pay no sales tax on trans-state sales (at least true for mail/internet orders), so apart from your daily groceries there is hardly any need for paying big bucks on electronics etc.

You are required to pay the taxes on interstate sales (such as mail order) based on the taxes of your state. In fact, in Ohio, when you fill out your state income tax form they ask how much you have bought over the internet/mail order so you can pay your sales tax on those sales.

Hell, sometimes they don't even wait for you to register it. I've gone to do domain checks at GoDaddy for a domain I might want to use, decide to mull it over, and come back the next week to buy it only to find that some company got it and parked an ad site there. I have no idea how they know that I checked on it, but they somehow get it on a list and snap it up.

I remember when this hit Digg awhile back. What I understand is happening is that the request for the availability of a domain goes to all the domain registrars. Some of the domain squatters also run their own registrar, which allows them to see what names others are searching for and register them instead. Since they can register a domain and return it for free in a minimum amount a time, it doesn't cost them anything to put up a parked domain and see what kind of money the site may return.

This would affect using whois or any of the other registrar sites also.

  5. Prior art... Nintendo 64 on Joystick Port Patented, Now the Lawsuit · · Score: 4, Insightful

Their patent applies to analog joysticks. It's a method of sending the information of a joystick's position as a digital pulse, therefore requiring less wiring for multiple analog sticks and buttons. The controller could send the information about the various states of the buttons and joysticks encoded as a digital stream.

Unfortunately for them, they applied for the patent in '98, long after the N64 was released. I don't know for sure, but since the N64 controller only has (IIRC) 3 wires in the cable, they must be using something like what this patent describes.

It's interesting that they applied for the patent two months after the release of the dual-shock controller for the PS1. IMO, someone saw the dual shock and patented the idea on how it would work.

The thing is, unless Apple can seamlessly integrate their desktop OS into Active Directory like how 2000/XP (and soon Vista) already do, they're not going to be considered as a major player in corporate IT land. They need to be able to plug into currently existing infrastructure, be centrally managed, and offer an improved Net Present Value over PC's.

OS X client can bind to AD right now, but to manage the computer, you would need an OS X Server (10 user version is all you need if you store the home directories on a Windows server) to manage it. Then you can use all your current users and groups on the OS X machines.

I had an electronic quiz book in the late 1970's where you read the question, pick an answer from the multiple choice, punch the corresponding button, and the device would tell you the correct answer with all the bells and whistles. You could replace the book with other books. I thought this was the coolest thing ever when I was a kid. Until I noticed that every book had the exact same answer for each question number (i.e., 1-A, 2-B, 3-C, 4-D, etc.). Then it wasn't so cool after you figure out the pattern. That was the problem with a lot of game "consoles" back then since each game relied on a predefined pattern.

Not really. I used OS/2 [Warp] around that time. It was a solid OS, compared to that day's Windows. But it had no appeal to the regular user; fonts were fat and ugly, GUI operations were somewhat unusual, and IIRC only 16-bit Windows apps were supported (Win95 was released a couple of years before that.)

OS/2 Warp 3.0 was actually released about a year ahead of Win95. It supported an older version of the Win32 subsystem (besides supporting Win16) because Microsoft changed it in a newer version to break compatibility in OS/2. This Win32 allowed 32-bit apps to run under Windows 3.11. OS/2 Warp 4.0 was released in 1996.

I ran OS/2 Warp for several years, until about the time Windows 98 was released. It was such a cool operating system, combined with Object Desktop. I am now running it again under Parallels on my Macbook, it even has Firefox!
