there is absolutely no need for a 'desktop' in Linux. EVERYTHING can be done at the CLI, for the BASIC user. e-mail: pine, elm; word processing: pico, vi, vim, emacs, jove; web browsing: links, lynx.
And if you need pretty pictures to do your web browsing, someone could code a browser much like the early DOS apps that would just pop up in a different graphics mode and voila, pretty pictures.
Then again I am only playing advocate to a little demon called the CLI because I hate the Devil that is called GUI.
Lets say you work in Arizona... Summer time temp around 115 F. Work inside..nice frosty 65-70 F... Gotta go from one office-building to another, put hoochie-laptop on 'standby'...jump out the door into your car..temp is now 115+ the baking effect...condensation becoming a problem? Or not likely because it would adapt to 'room temp' near instantaneously once outside the refridgerated room?
As if they were the enemy or something... the enemy is NOT microsoft nor virus authors. the enemy IS those ignorant programmers that have no idea how to test their code to see if the CODE is vulnerable...
Symantec taking over should have little effect on the amount of product they sell. They are simply heading into a new market and doing so by purchasing the leader in that market. By being ready for what may come, they can better attack the problems when they arrive and better serve their customer base.
Damn, I remember games that were like 1 FPS. Oh, maybe there wasn't even a measurement at the time for frame-rates...hell-if-I-know. then again those were EGA and CGA graphics... I never returned those games, and still play them today actually! Dark Heart of Ukrull California Games Bard's Tale...ahhh the classics...
Government != Culture it may play an important role in how the culture develops but Government itself is far from culture.
China's culture stems far more from Feudalism than from Communism, and unless I'm mistaken China has actually maintained their 'clans' in some psuedo sort of way.
I believe there is no culture/government that is protected from the scrutany and criticism of the people of the world. Problems abound in plenty here in the States, why not focus on OUR problems and try solving those before we go inflicting wounds of blame and finger pointing at other countries...
A coward for openly stating what I believe? This is a new definition to me. As for an apologist for totalitarianism...I don't believe I was apologetic to anyone, merely pointing out the FACT that a democracy is NOT the only way to effectively govern a nation...
The point of my post was that Google as a business has ZERO obligation to adhere to the ideals of the Chinese government, the fact that they DO it goes to show that they can still contribute to the good of the people of China even if it isn't to "the GREATER good" that we Americans try to impose upon all other nations.
I agree that Government REPRESSION is not a good thing, but communism and socialism on the purist level have "nothing" wrong with them, in the sense of governance.
I would be okay with it... If you are ENTERING a marketing in a foreign country you best damn well abide by THEIR terms.
This 'America is the shit and everyone needs to be like us' attitude is just one of the many reasons foreign nations dislike us so.
Like it or not, China has their rules and regulations and if you want to survive in their market, then drop your ego for a moment and realize that OUR democratic government(loosely put) is NOT "The only way a country can be run effectively"
What we don't seem to hear much of, is users going back to their old operating systems
Since when is an avid 3 year Linux user 'going back to their old operating system' and that operating system is Microsoft XP?
How the hell can a 2 year old product have been in use by this guy 3 years ago? What, they think that readers can't count anymore? Or maybe just playing on the ignorance of most of their readers?
Yeah, except that there are differences among gamers and non-gamers at rest, too. And it's not very adaptive for your brain to have no beta activity when you're supposed to be awake.
I disagree. Perhaps one could achieve a state of Zen in which they relax and clear their mind, resulting in a smaller amount of activity compared to those who were not able to achieve this state of Zen.
Anything NOT maximizing the revenue generated towards the labels is overly utopian. I really believe that most of the artists couldn't give a damn as long as they make their couple of million dollars. The labels on the other hand need more than just a couple million...to pay for their own salary to begin with and all of the political campaigns they attempt to purchase.
yes..that's right..."TALK"...you know the old faithful way of communication between two entities in the early days of *nix:)
although it appears that it has gone by the wayside with all this damn GUI interface stuff springing up all over the place...*grumble*
Here is a little quote from the man file =(
"The protocol used to communicate with the talk daemon is braindead.
Also, the version of talk(1) released with 4.2BSD uses a different and even more braindead protocol that is completely incompatible. Some vendor Unixes (particularly those from Sun) have been found to use this old pro-tocol.
Old versions of talk may have trouble running on machines with more than one IP address, such as machines with dynamic SLIP or PPP connections.
This problem is fixed as of netkit-ntalk 0.11, but may affect people you are trying to communicate with."
My typing teacher in high school would type in excess of 100 wpm on one of those OLD OLD OLD hammer/stroke typewriters...AND...she had to manually carriage return as well...
Typing is about reflexes, and read-ahead so your brain->finger que is full and your fingers are reflexively spitting out the que to the keyboard.
I also feel it has a lot to do with WHAT text is being typed. If it is coming from your mind or if you are reading someone's writing and typing it up or if you are reading a printout etc. etc.
All I know is play on PK MUDS for a few years and you'll KNOW how to type and fast!...or have a really pathetic character from dying so much.
for every 10,000 pieces of spam mail sent
at least 1 gets a 'buyer'
so the more spam sent the more buying happens..

Is it just my ignorance or is there no H2O loss due to the heating of the water?
And no condensation within the case due to temporal differences?

TIM was the hit!
not only is it a great mind game...but it teaches a bit about physics as well...
Last year I installed it on a few machines to allow the physics class lab time playing it =)

a 6' tall blonde walks up to them and offers them sex for an id and passwd...
What the memo SHOULD say is that all id's and passwords have been changed to:
ID: noskilz
PW: n05K!lZ
and just allow 'dummy' info out there...
and then put a little honeypot out for the little script bitches to use...
