Apologies, there's some technical issues with posts right now, in terms of title bar color, and also icons showing up when they shouldn't - it's being looked at as we speak.
Depends on how you read the phrase 'Japan-only', surely? I took it to mean that they're currently only being released in Japan, but that doesn't mean to say a US publisher wouldn't pick it up somewhere down the line (like, say, Conspiracy has been doing with some of the Takara games recently.)
But thanks for the polite reply pointing out my deficiencies, anyhow:)
For what it's worth, it's not a mainpage dupe - this is a subpage-only games post. I got caught out because the earlier Will Wright story wasn't filed under games, so I didn't spot it. Apologies.
There's already a Terminator 3 game announced for consoles - I clearly state that in the post. This is a completely different game, and it's specifically for PC and online, and it hasn't been announced yet.
Seriously, please read the post before making sarcastic remarks.
I agree that the games _have_ been very different, but this new Ridge Racer has licensed cars, a self-described more realistic driving model, and rally tracks - so they seem to be converging somewhat in terms of style. But I agree, in terms of heritage, there's no direct comparison.:)
Thanks for the pick-up on the Tolkien thing - unfortunately, there's no sci-fi authors in our spellchecking software, and also no accounting for mental aberrations on my part.
I think this game definitely has smaller amount of units than, say, the Total War series (which they seem to mention, a little defensively, in the interview.) Not necessarily a bad thing, I guess, as long as you can control the units you do have properly.
As a big fan of the Yak, I actually picked up a Samsung N501 DVD player a few months ago, which comes with Nuon capabilities and the best VLM built in to the BIOS - you could get them for as low as $80 on close-out in some Web stores.
Incidentally, beware - some Nuon players like the Samsung Extiva have non-interactive VLM, it's a lot more fun to be able to control the effects with a joypad too.)
I've actually mailed Gamespy about this problem (which happens in Mozilla?), since we've been linking to a number of Gamespy previews and articles, and it's been happening in a lot of them.
They haven't got back to me yet - anyone else who wants to mention it to them, feel free.
"selling a remake of an old game that makes it essentially just an SNES game playable on the PSX won't fly here in North America."
..but wasn't that the type of thing done (to NES games) for the Final Fantasy Origins Playstation release? However, I do agree that it might be weird to release Final Fantasy III on its own, and that _some_ enhancement is very likely. Time for blatant speculation about other titles to go with FF3!
We may find out that the mystery title is Chocobo Stallion after all this, of course:)
Unfortunately, the big selling point of Manhunt right now is that it's 'mysterious'. Gotta love stealth advertising? Or not. I saw one foreign website comparing the game to the movie 'The Fugitive', but I have no idea if that's right or not.
So there's still no screenshots and details, though the game has been on release lists since 2001. Rockstar launched GTA3 with a fair bit of stealth, though (probably because they wanted to get into stores before complaints about the content started!), which makes me hopeful.. we'll see.
As some of you have noticed, we've had a couple of strange technical problems on this post (specifically, the post initially looking blank, for those logged-in with sections collapsed on the mainpage, and some other weird display issues.)
Thanks to people for mentioning it so fast, though - we're working on fixing it. Please continue discussing 3DO as if your life depended on it?:P
Hmm, indeed. Is anyone still seing the blank article on the main page?
You'll only get it if you're logged in and have 'collapse sections' or similar ticked, so that you can see subpage-only posts listed on the main page, I think?
Would have to agree - NiGHTS is an all-time classic - there's something about the wonderful sense of well-being you get while playing it, and the strange but intuitive controls, that really make it gel - maybe even more so than the Sonic games for me. Yay.
I can see how you might be confused by the 'even on Playstation 2' comment, so I've changed the post to add Gamecube and Xbox, just in case:)
And, yes, I know Uplink was mainly using a graphical interface, but figured it was still worth mentioning, because there aren't really that many hacking games out there, the themes are similar, and a lot of people have missed Uplink because it doesn't have a major publisher behind it, sadly.
Just came across a good article which explains some of the issues, here at Reason Online.
A quote: the journos were "..trying to enter the U.S. the same way European journalists have been coming for the last 17 years: on the Visa Waiver program, which allows the citizens of 27 friendly countries (from Andorra to Switzerland) to visit the States up to 90 days without a visa, as long as the trip is for "business or pleasure." Journalism, according to American consular writ, does not qualify as either."
That's a fair point, actually. This was one of the less essential Games subpage-only posts of recently, and I'm going to try not to pick such relatively minor stuff in future unless there's a genuine talking point around it - and in this case, there probably wasn't.:) Consider me officially chastened.
I think the point I was trying to make was that the gameplay is similar (survival horror, with the emphasis on chills?) - I know that the plot didn't carry over from SH1 to SH2, but they were still fundamentally the same genre of game? Thanks for picking that up, though:)
When I say good-looking, I generally mean visually attractive. This doesn't necessarily mean it plays well. And the bite-sized reviews? It's for the average Slashdot reader's attention span, of course:)
The Sega Sports titles were they, and they looked excellent, but I haven't really played them enough to understand the iterations properly, so I didn't mention them - apologies:)
I actually modded up your post, for at least presenting a solution to the possible problem in a _constructive_ manner. So rest assured that we're not just sitting here in a big-ass ivory tower ignoring all potential problems.:)
You're welcome to mail games@slashdot.org with either 'I still like the color scheme' or 'This is, constructively, what I don't like about it' and if we can all reach a consensus, then *ding*, we have a winner.
Here's the first screenshot. The game's developed by Firefly, who are made of ex-Impressions developers - the Impressions people's resume includes Zeus, Pharoah, Caesar, and Great Cthulhu. OK, all except that last one.

I actually got hold of Xmas NiGHTS when it was included as a cover-CD for the UK Sega Saturn magazine (here's a link that includes a picture of the disc.)
Would have to agree - NiGHTS is an all-time classic - there's something about the wonderful sense of well-being you get while playing it, and the strange but intuitive controls, that really make it gel - maybe even more so than the Sonic games for me. Yay.

Fixed now, thanks for the save.

Thanks, much appreciated - I actually updated the story to point to the official source, and still credited Shacknews for the original tip. :)

This isn't a front page story, it's a games subsection story - you'll only see it on the front page if you have 'collapse subsections' turned on. Ta :)
Good point :) I thought it looked wrong, but it's spelt wrong in the article too, which confused me further. Thanks :)
