  1. I will believe it when I SEE it on Motorola To Release Linux and Java-based Phone/PDA · · Score: 1

now every company is _planning_ on releasing a smartphone - kyocera / sony-ericsson / motorola.

Sony p800 was supposed to be out last year. I am still waiting for it. I am NOT willing to pay the insane Ebay prieces ($800) for it.

I have a Kyocera 6035 and like it. Even though, it is kind of showing its size - now the novelity is worn off. I have been waiting for a 'next gen' smart phone, and don't find any viable competition.

so yes, cool ideas. But when they release the product for $300 bucks & not tied to a provider (sprint / verizon) then we'll talk.

  5. how KDE wins *SILENTLY* on Mozilla Project Hurt by Apple's Decision to use KH · · Score: 2

This may get modded down. But here is my observation during last 5 yrs of Linux / Opensource world.

*gnome + mozilla crowd craves attention*

    Cases in point.

    - I remember when Gnome started there was constant gloating about how it is 'free all the way' as oppossed to KDE based on QT. KDE worked silently to form QT-Foundation which guranteed QT's availablilty.
Also when KDE released 2.0 Gnome was under pressure to rush to 1.2(was it?) release, if I remember correctly.

    - mozilla was very vocal about how their 'super' browser will end the dominant IE and provide a viable browser on all platforms. (In my opinion they are there feature wise, but performance/looks is another issue).
While KDE group said 'we are working on a simple File Manager + Browser'. And when Konq came out, wham, it was so awesome (and worked!) evey one liked it.

Don't get me wrong. I use Konq and Mozilla. Konq still chokes on some sites. But for most of the sites I visit work fine and that is good enough for me.
I also use Evolution as my email client and I also like Gnome.

So at the end, in my opinion KDE stands out as a 'silent winner' while Mozilla crowd is screaming, 'we are cool'.

I know I am stearotyping a lot of developers in all the projects I mentioned here. But that is my observation. ./LinuxLover

  6. finally, NO freaking MAIL-IN-REABATES on Hard Drives Down To A Dollar A Gigabyte · · Score: 2

The drives have been $1/gig with mail-in-rebates for some time now. (big stores, BestBuy / Frys ..etc).

    But I loath MIRs!

May it is just me, but I could never get any rebates. It is some sort of 'missing proof of purchase'. Even though I stuffed every thing from the store receipt to those damn stickers in one envelope and mailed it.

So I felt like I was ripped-off and never tried mail-in-rebates since then. I always thought they were some sort of scam. They rely on you
    - not mailing in the rebates (how many geeks do?)
    - or able to refuse rebate because a sticker is slightly damaged!

Finally it is good news, that you can get a $1/gig without those MIRs..

Most of the laid -off people I have seen are in this category

    - marketting types..

    - 'irritable' programmers, who think all programming is pressing that button in Visual Studio IDE. These are again the 'quick-buck' types, who doesn't know what a 'stack' is..

All my friends who are real techies (programmers / engineers / sys admins) are still employed. Sure they don't get 20% raises these days. But they still have a job.

This just my observation, I am NOT saying who ever doesn't have a job is not a real techie. What do other slashdotters think?

replying to myself. Found the answer in their FAQ :-) Here it is..
    ----
    Q. Wait, doesn't this mean that anyone can make up a word, specify a number, and then send me email at my spamgourmet address?
    A. You, who are obviously using your brain, should no longer use no-brainer mode and should start using advanced mode. But let's first consider the likelihood of that happening and also whether you'd consider such email spam. Remember that most spammers use automated programs to send email to thousands or millions of recipients from lists of hopefully real emails that they compile or acquire. Currently, we are not aware that any of these programs make up complicated email addresses in the hopes that they'll work. If someone singles out you, yes, you, [your name here], and sends a message to you this way, then we can't really say it's a bulk email. If you're still freaked out, go to advanced mode and specify a prefix word, then come back and change it every once in a while. Disposable addresses will need to contain your current prefix word in order to be created, like so:
    currentprefix.someword.4.spamcowboy@spamgourm et.co m
So the prefix works like a password that a sender must have before the sender can create an address on your account. But really, stop freaking and try no-brainer mode for awhile (or, at least, advanced mode without using a prefix). It's easier, and it'll take quite some time before your username gets around, anyhow.

Take your walmart case for example. What is stopping them to send mail to you with a new 'alias', like..

because they know your user name already. Then they can come up with unlimited combinations.

    Is this right?
