Converserly, We know nothing about the code we buy from propriatery developer nor do we ( or most likely they ) know anything about the code in the thridparty libraries that may have been included inthe purchased application. We know nothing about the security of the servers providing the updates nor the features included in those updates. We KNOW NOTHING. Yet we accept , almost glibly, the stanards and security of those systems accepting that since its for enterprise it must me more reliable.
So when an group of administrators working on a server which provides software and updates to products for which you can read and see the content and know the features is compromised, you feel its poor quality.
it seems the effort and the acceptance of responsibility do nothing more than increase the level with which we should be accepting these open systems. They appear to have a demonstrably better level of reporting and culpability than many closed servers.
Dakota Fanning is NOT to play the main female lead in this . please please please let it never be done. Also Emily Watson should not be considered since Alex Albrecht [sic] needs no more encouragement.
I think also we should tie up Andy Soekris ( I dont care about the spelling ).. Since this film does not feature a lead character falling from a great height.
and magnetic disk and removable media for the content ?
I must spend forever trying to configure windows to run the Documents and Settings folder on a seperate partition as well as finding ways of locking the current run state install for the Window folder. Programs like drive snapshot help in the build but I can see how it may now be possible to sell a alternative Pc.
Manufacturers can start builing a PC where you buy a seperate "option" of a external USB drive. Now they can manufacture a PC with all Solid State components from Motherboard, Graphic card, Memory and "disk" drive. Configure the operating system to boot and run and then allow it to locate other storage devices. Less power is then required for the overall build....
hey wait a minute.. isnt this Apples plan for the Mac Mini ? hmmmmm
And watch the spectacle of the Slashdot audience actually admitting that Microsoft got something totally and utterly right.
A single and unified multiplayer gaming environment ensured to work with all mutliplayer titles with one fee and easy access no matter what your gaming level.
lets face it ladies and gentleman. Ive said it before and I will say it again.. Microsoft always get it right in the entertainment division [1] because they can lock down the delivery and sell only the sizzle.
[1] okay your going to flame me on costs of xboxen.. loss of profits blah blah blah... but lets face it... no other gaming platform makes multiplayer gaming so easy over the net as XBox live.
I wondered when I read the article if it had not been crafted by an industry who is concerned that we are loosing our dependence on their opiates [sic].
Theres less concern now for addiction to newpaper reading or television watching than their is to people on the net interacting with others.
Is it possible that the media are concerned that we will depend more on each other for our news and social reports and less on the figure head broadcasting one truth and one lie equally ?
I used to enjoy Slashdot.. but its not the medium but the message which needs an overhaul. No amount of Spit and Polish to the interface will make me want it more. Id like to see quality of content and value in editorial response. This place begins to feel like one of those shops on the high street just months away from its Closing Down sale.
Okay so lets see first theres the arguement that actually that is only true if all software is built and developed and criticised in a equal fashion. Then it assumes that there are an equal number of equal security issues in all operating systems and then it assumes that what works in targeting one system will work ( with adjustment ) at targetting all platforms.
Lets review the facts
1. Mac OSX and Linux are built from different code bases and structures to each other and windows.
2. OSX and Linux come from a parentage that have been available to target for at least 10 years. Of which an equal amount of time has Windows been available.
3. Despite the internet being avialable 24hrs a day 7 days a week for well over a few million machines world wide its as a majority the MS machines and servers which keep bringing the disruption to the network.
4. Its not just one version of windows that keeps being affected but many different versions and releases are able to be targetted with many the same vulnerabilities. Mac OSx, Linux other Unixes due to their hybridisation and differenation enable enough differences to form the defence against similar architecture attacks.
So in Conlcusion :
Yes there is a risk for 1 person but its unlikely to be able to become a risk to every one else in the network. Unlike a Windows Platform where by the risk to one immediately creates the risk to others. Which is where the misconception of the "risk" management issues arises.
Actualy this affectd all Digital systems that I have experienced. Well over 8 years ago I worked for a UK Company that bought a new "modern" system and every power cut ( you can expect a cut once a year , we had 4 ) the phone system ( not a VoIP system ) went down with the rest of the kit. So Voip reliability like the system is affected by planning for a Good UPS
the value of art increases when the Artist dies. Well since this has no where to go but up I wonder what happens to its value when the drive dies. no wait . it cant decrease can it ?
I wonder if it qualifies for the Waste Electronic Equipment act ? If so would it be taking the WEE to say its not worth disposing !
would it not be better to spend money to decrease crime and where that fails.. improve support for the victims and the abillity for the police to catch the criminal quicker. none of which are affected by a biometric card.
Heres a thought... youve seen the Biomtric advert that IBM are running. So now I get my laptop and my hand ripped off by some nutter whose desperate to get to my data and my computer.
"I'm quite impressed at how the anglosaxon world reacts to ID cards. They are present in most countries, and are a far cry from a fascist tool."
But they *could* be used a a fascist tool right ? I mean its a possibility. If you think thats absurd then lets just look at what happens when good countries go bad.
Ethnic Cleansing, removing large swathes of the populace whom dont match the criteria for accectibilty. Currenlty most countries when this occurs have to physically react and this is something which sometimes helps in reducing casualties since the effort to enforce is often higher than the desire.
But if the goverment has a Push button mechanism of deciding who is "in" and who is "out" then you can cut out a large swathe without confrontation.
of course this is all hyperbole and just thinking aloud but it is important to be clear that just because something appears to be harmless it does not mean it will not bite later on !
Ive not read the No2ID article ( yet ) but heres a point of view from my Neighbour.
My Neighbour, Detective Constable, is very much in favour of ID cards. On explanation though the reason is this:- If youve nothing to fear then why worry. If your not commiting crime then why are you worried about what peple know about you. He goes on to point out that many people in the UK have given up privacy with Store Cards, Credit Cards, Switch Cards, Loyalty Cards, Fast pay cards and not to mention Driver Licenses, Passports, National Insurance etc etc etc.
What he has not convinced me of though is that in having a national ID that it will in any way reduce crime or stop terrorism or halt fraud.
Indeed he made it quite clear that criminals do not carry id or generally assist in identification if they can avoid it.
It seems to me that a criminal is already beyond caring about legality and its very unlikely that they will carry any legitimate identifaction.
Ive heard it expressed quite well by a comedian who posed the question "What freedoms am i restricting other people to have by owning a ID card"
As I pointed out to my neighbour the money spent on this scheme and the on going resources and expense in deliveriing it might be better spent in equipping him and other support organisations ( Hospitals or Fire ) with more people and better training.
In the town where I live the paper seems to be reporting every week about a violent attack or robbery on local citizens by various "youths" will these attackers be showing their ID cards before robbing their victims ?
So now im off to rtfa.. but its interesting how the security groups and organisations in this country are very much in favour of something that in reality gives no added benefit to their ability to stop crime.
Well yes it is incorrect. Its incorrect because its poor use and undertanding of the language in which you are communicating.
For the unobservant in QueerBoys post he has suggested that the use of the There, They'are and Their are all essentially the same. They are not all the same and this is why. There: Defines a location in context to the speaker or in relation to another location. This is not the correct word for that sentence. Their: Is a third person possive pronoun which would make the sentence suggest that the group own a thing called going. This would be an incorrect use of a pronoun. They're: Is a contraction of two words They and Are to make the sentence They are. This is the correct use of the pronoun.
So why is this important ?
Because poor use of english, poor spelling and poor grammar will result in many assumptions being made about you and how you communicate. None of those assumptions will be positive or sugesst to the reader or listener that you are suitably qualified to give an opinion.
The same comment would apply to the use of spoken langauge. This seems most prevelant in the use of English and the now lazy contraction and abbreviation of words and sentences as part of everyday speech.
Before anyone launches into a language should be allowed to evolve and grow I would point out that yes this is one opinion. However surely it is more responsible to ensure a healthy and consistent growth and development of a language ?
to the Free Support clearly available to a business for any windows operating system or application after I pay for it !
How poor is Mr Koelsch's judgement that he can say a comment like "Linux is free, but the support for it is not." and yet not back this up with a proof in the survey that says "Windows support is free the operating system is not" !
In my local Federation of Small Business Chapter there are a number of IT service providers, im the only one ( well no one has directly contradicted me at the meetings when I say that ) who directly provides Linux support and has been talking about it over the last 6 years. All of us providing IT Support have a value for our support per hour, per day or per month. So support is never Free it always gets paid for somewhere.
As for not on the horizon, all i can say is Mr Koelsh you should turn around and look at the sunrise and not the sunset to see where the new operating system is dawning.
WoW .. this is totally not comment i replied to .. something is broken !

Sponsored at least one laptop .. how many more laptops could be paid for ?
I wrote to them asking where I could send $100 to sponsor the creation of the laptop.. I was automailed a response.
im still waiting for a real person from their group to answer my question .
