This article is pure drivel. I want my time, and my computer is so offended it is asking for the bits back.
Who really gives a shit about some criminal and his slutty daughter.
It must be a really slow news day for Slashdot.
Hmm. There is quite a bit of American television broadcast in a "letterbox" format, which looks pretty good on my widescreen. For example, on HBO, The Sopranos and Six Feet Under are both letterboxed, so they look natural on the 16x9 TV. UPN has Enterprise in letterbox, too.
So when you watch your 4x3 TV, and see the black bars on the top and bottom of the letterboxed picture, just imagine that in widescreen, 'cause that's what it is.
Besides all that, the penetration of HDTV transmitted terrestrially is getting pretty good. Here in Atlanta, there are 5 stations transmitting HDTV.
The AK-47 is completely illegal in the U.S. without a federal permit, so I am unsure how popular this device will be here in the U.S.
The AK-47 is the most reproduced assault weapon ever made, and is the likely choice of those who would attack U.S. soldiers and non-combatants worldwide...
I hope that Koltakov is right when he says "Hopefully, from now on many Militants and Terrorists will use their AK47s to listen to music and audio books...They need to chill out and take it easy."
I would rather see the AK-47s themselves beat into plowshares...
Salon offers nothing to the centrist or conservative person who does not live in San Francisco.
I used to read it in 1999, when it was new, and the content was interesting (remember the Surreal Gourmet?) but it had gone steadily down hill since then.
The linked article talks about their expensive office space in downtown SF. Please. If they were running on a shoestring, why get the expensive office space?
Doubtless this will get down-moderated as flamebait.
There was a news article last week that stated Iraq had acquired some Russian GPS jammers. These have the potential to render smart bombs untargetable, and cause lots of unintended civilan damage when the bombs miss their targets.
So now you bring out the EMP weapons first, and fry all the GPS jammers. Your smart bombs have been de-lobotomized, and can find their intended targets again. This has the added bonus of wiping out the enemy's RADARs, etc.
Let's take an 80 mm fan (diameter about 3 inches) and pipe it through a 1.5 inch hose into a closed space. Do the geometry and calculate the area. Not too efficient.
Why not just jam the fan to stop the noise and keep the heat in the case?
IMHO, the surface mount technology that most consumer electronics is made of today is not as reliable as the older "through-hole" technology from the 70s and 80s. The problem is thermal expansion of the printed circuit boards over and over again stresses the solder connections of the very tiny parts until the connection becomes intermittent or completely fails. Through-hole was much more robust because component leads were supported by the holes through the boards, although certainly more labor intensive and therefore more expensive.
Intermittent or open connections on surface mount boards are a real bitch to troubleshoot, too.
Everybody who has seen a demo or used my DirecTivo wants one!
My first experience with TiVo zealotry made me think the zealots were crazy, but I am now converted to a zealot myself. It's even more fun for geeks; you can make hardware changes (more disk and a network adapter) and software changes (telnet, ftp, video extraction, caller ID on the screen, etc.)
I do not know why there has not been more of a net presence for the Yankee Siege, a 55' trebuchet built by a farmer to get more people to visit his farm stand. The Christian Science Monitor reports is as the 3rd biggest trebuchet in the world... They are slinging 200 lb pumpkins 900' into the woods! Unfortunately, there are not a lot of pictures of this contraption on the net.
My Dad went to see it and was very impressed. I have seen the photos--I want one.
For those in New England, this thing is in Greenfield, NH
Here is another example of a slow news day at Slashdot.
CmdrTaco: If you are listening--it would be very nice to be able to moderate the articles as well as their replies.
I would moderate this article as "off-topic". It is not "News for Nerds" and it does not "matter."
Hmmm.. This is news? Didn't this feature first appear in the DEC Itsy? About 5 years ago?
HP is winning--with Alpha.
Too Bad Alpha Is Dead.
The breakdown by manufacturer statistics would have been a lot different if it was still DEC Alpha.
Call me a sourpuss.
This is an excellent idea. I think it could be implemented like a caching proxy for all URLs referenced through slashdot.
Just wondering: Since some of those signs seem to imply that Linus is a thief, I wonder if he can now sue SCO for defamation???
I think I know why no company has bought SCO to put this behind us.
There is no sense in rewarding bad behavior.
To buy SCO to squelch the lawsuit would just encourage other companies to try the same trick again.
I hope IBM's lawyers stub them out like a Camel non-filter.
Better read the Fair Labor Standards Act before you decide to sue.
I.T. Professionals are specifically exempted from the Fair Labor Standards Act.
Is this news for nerds? Does it matter?
seriously bored nerds, perhaps. But it does not matter one bit to me.
What is this doing on Slashdot?
Taco and Hemos must be on vacation or something.

Automatic weapons are prohibited by *federal* law. State law never preempts federal law.

I heard that Rob bought Emeril's old restaraunt and it will now be called CmdrTaco's Palace.

This must have been brought to us be the same hucksters who sell those cell phone antenna boosters
By US Robotics .
Remember them? They made those old-fashioned modem-things.
DirecTV only charges $5 a month for the TiVo fee. And it's billed on their bill. Makes it really simple.

Bring on the Trek Babes! Marina Sirtis! Jeri Ryan! Roxann Dawson! and the oh-so-hot Jolene Blalock!
So, Taco, did you order yours yet?
it's not stuff that matters.

The FCC doesn't have staff to watch all this anymore. They won't bother unless someone complains.
