True. But replace "work"/"artwork/"material" with "code", and we have a pretty interesting problem.
Of course for coding, your peers know how much beef you have and it's harder to fool people, but for small "personal projects" it's still impossible to distinguish between genuine and "pirated" works.
"easy way for people (like scholars, musicians, filmmakers, and authors--from world-renowned professionals to garage-based amateurs) to announce that their works are available for copying, modification, and redistribution."
The terms in GPL was designed to be licenced for software/code. The GNU is basically a software project. Slashdot is a forum for (mostly) computer and tech geeks. Yes we have it, but the other people don't have a FSF equivalent in their fields.
How much difference is there between chatting online and chatting with people in real life? The same rules apply: Don't trust strangers.
I only chat with people I know, and occasionally if somebody I don't know approaches me, I would make sure the person doesn't have any harmful intentions before I continue the conversation. Pretty much same to real life I guess.
It's actually less dangerous than in real life. Unless you actually meet those people or unless you're totally obsessed with your online life, there aren't many ways people could do you harm (other than h4x0ring your b0x3n)
The reason I am using Linux now is because it is free speech and beer, and there's lots of options to choose from. And most importantly, it doesn't have all those commercial crap cramped into the OS and applications.
Standardizing Linux and making linux a better option is all well and good, but if I had to give up those freedoms I'd rather it not happen.
1. MAKEDEV will fix it (although it might be more than just fixing the device file if it broke), no need to memorize the numbers 2. devfs would prevent this from happening 3. you're not running as (gasp!) root are you??
Wine is an implementation of the windows APIs on X and Unix. Aside from the very very core code, I don't really see how M$ could make anything out of the wine codebase... They already have their implementation of the APIs (and wine is only copying the published APIs, and APIs are usually fully implemented by windows before they are published), and since they have total understanding of the APIs, I doubt they really have the need to use wine code.
They're targeting companies who need the exchange server functionality and aren't hesitant to shell out a few bucks for a opensource, windows free version. You're not gonna pay of course. Neither will I, but they're hoping that somebody will be willing to;-)
if you want to turn carbon dioxide into fuel you'd need to input energy during the conversion. A LOT of energy too. Most of our energy comes from fossil fuels. and we aren't using the energy we got from fossil fuels to convert CO2 back into fuels!!! I don't think anybody is interested in doing that, unless the gas gets really annoying and there's a much better alternative energy source to provide the energy for conversion.
Vim is scriptable. You can implement almost ANY function in Vim provided that it can be invoked from a shell. And with the powerful shell of linux, you can almost add any kind of "tricks up its sleeve" to Vim easily.
Remember the UNIX philosophy of everything being small and doing just its own job?
Cowboy hat and boots? why not invite.... Cowboyneal ??
I mean, like, "Why did Microsoft abandon Hailstorm?" - Cowboyneal!! "Why did you jump like a cowboy on the stage?" - Cowboyneal told me to! "Do you really love your company?" - As much as Cowboyneal does!!
It was impossible to build Slashdot 2000 years ago. But technology improves. You think scientists were daydreaming for like 50 years?
And "they" haven't gotten there yet!
Imagine those imagining a Beowulf cluster of these!!!

Perl and PHP is different. Sure they may have that dollar sign as variables, and they have C style flow control, but that's where the similarity ends.
PHP borrows its syntax from various other languages, including Perl, but also C, Java, Javascript, etc

Evolution has never core dumped for me. Which version are you talking about?
This confirms the myth....
Emacs is an operating system
(At the risk of sounding -1 ignorant, here goes...)
I have not used Redhat since 7.x came out, but as a lot of people out use Redhat, I would like to ask a few questions:
How does Redhat compare with other "server" distros like Debian, Slackware and the likes? What advantages does it have over the other distros?
How smooth is a major upgrade on Redhat (eg. 6.x -> 7.x) would there be efforts needed to tweak the system such that it doesn't break?
Is RPM really as bad as some people advertised?
Imagine the possibilities!!
Scenario:
Reporter: Mr. famous_person *camera flashes* would you comment on your relationship *camera flashes* with Miss XXX?
Mr. famous_person: Sorry but I have no *camera flashes* comment *camera flashes* at this stage. (tries to get away)
Reporter: Do you believe *camera flashes* that this relationship will have an impact on *camera flashes* your career?
Mr. famous_person: I have a nanotube in my pocket!!!

come on, how many US security sites / funding / research are already out there? It's no big deal...
This has got to be a joke, right? A fake press release? Please, tell me it's a joke.
This has gotta be Ask Slashdot. I mean, do "normal" editors post stuff they're not sure of and ask readers to validate/invalidate the news??

IIRC, in the official GCC site, it said 2.95.x had better optimizations than 3.0.x
As somebody has already stated, this is an effect to counter the doubled speed, such that the net gain would be effectively Zero. ;-)
August....?
Sounds like +1 Insightful to me.
Or am I seriously in lack of humor?
(As of now, "Moderation Totals: Interesting=1, Funny=1, Total=2." Displays as Score:4 Funny)
huh?
in electrolysis, oxygen comes out of the positive electrode (anode) and hydrogen comes out of the negative electrode (cathode).
I thought that was high school chemistry.
