I'm glad you have such an assuming nature. For the record, I don't have any pirated MP3's, but for the simple reason that it's too much a pain in the ass to rename them to the naming convention I prefer and make sure all their ID3 tags are correct. I rather like ripping my CDs with iTunes and then listening to them on my iPod, however.

  8. Re:*RIP*, Mix , Burn on Disney Blames Apple For Music Piracy · · Score: 3, Insightful

    You're still missing the point.

Who are you to say that it's "more directly related to music piracy"? Doing so, in legal terms, will create a dangerous precedent. Outlawing something simply because it might lead to piracy is the same thing as outlawing cars (or alcohol - take your pick) because they might lead to drunk drivers.

The fact of the matter is, the act of ripping is perfectly legal and is protected under the Fair Use provisions of copyright law. Your reference to meth labs is irrelevant because meth is a controlled substance, right or wrong. Digital music, unlike meth, is legal. That's what you're failing to see. MP3's are legal. Meth is not. Your analogy fails.

What we need to understand is that we cannot outlaw everything that makes crimes easier. Murder is a crime. Should knives be outlawed? Grand Theft Auto is a crime. Should crowbars be outlawed? Rape is a crime. Should Astroglide be outlawed? Of course not, because all of them have legitimate uses - kinda like ripped MP3's.

Someone the government can call if it breaks and say "fix it!" - and have someone working on it less than 4 hours later. If some Linux company can provide that, then we have a chance.

Overall though, I have to say that I'd recommend the Palm Vx - 8 megs, slim, works exceptionally well, and there's a ton of stuff out there for it.

Unfortunately, those who need to get real work done don't want "hackable" and they couldn't care less about the "geek factor" of running Linux, X and GTK+. They care about having a handheld that is small, light, stores all their information and is simple and quick to use. This is the segment that Palm is trying to target, and they do very well with these people. I have a Palm Vx and a Pocket PC device (Jornada 720) and disregarding bulk (the Pocket PC devices are huge), I'd choose the Palm any day because it's the best tool for storing contacts, notes, TODO lists, my calendar and the like. It just works, and it works well.

Incidentally, this is why Palm sales are so slow - the Palm you bought 2 years ago still works perfectly and quickly, so there's no reason to upgrade.

No. It doesn't matter anyway - I do 1024x768 for Q3, because it keeps the screenshots smaller - less disk space, and I don't need to go back and edit them.

Regardless, it doesn't matter what I see - it matters, to Quake, how many frames it is pumping out each second. You will run faster with certain framerates, which is what my post discussed. It has been proven by various mods and tests. The numbers are 142 & 83 for single player, and 125 for multiplayer. It doesn't matter whether or not you can see them - it matters whether or not Quake is pumping them out.

    No.

On PowerMacs, the G4 processors themselves handle the pretty big task of doing all the audio. On other machines, one has a sound card (or built in sound). This takes the burden off the processor, so it is capable of pumping out more frames every second.

I'm not sure about numbers in terms of on-board vs a SoundBlaster Platinum, but you definitely won't see a decrease. On a Macintosh, if you add a 3rd party sound card, you will see a significant increase in speed.

  20. Re:Pathetic Q3 FPS numbers on Dual 1Ghz G4 PowerMac With Extra Yummy · · Score: 3, Informative

Actually, in Quake3, there is a limit that you need on Frames Per Second. The way Q3 does the rounding, the optimum FPS score is 142 for single-player games and 125 for multiplayer games. With your com_maxfps set to these values, you will strafe-jump farther and faster. It actually *can* make a big difference.

As far as 115 - it is rather sad, considering that my dual Athlon with a GeForce3 Ti 500 gets 200+ frames per second @ 1600x1200 (though I have it maxed at 125 - see above). But I have my settings tweaked well. My Dual G4 performs rather admirably as well - 1280x1024 and it runs about 130 frames per second. I could get it much faster - one only needs a sound card, which will relieve the processor of a significant burden. Try running Q3 with the sound off and it will be nearly as fast as current PC's, just as it should be.

ya. the computer you built has its own sound processor, whereas the G4 processors have to handle sound themselves. so while you're getting 145fps, that powermac with an actual sound card will probably be cranking out 150-160. crank it up to 1600x1200 and you'll watch your computer lose, and big time. i know, because i have a dual g4 with a geforce3 and a dual athlon with a gf3 ti500. the athlon is faster, but the g4 will still smoke yours when you add a real soundcard.

    Food for thought.

Yes, Slashdot moderation is ridiculous. Period. It's the biggest problem with Slashdot, and that's why I hardly ever read it anymore.

As far as Apple and processors... the G4 is a pretty good processor, and I have a Dual 800MHz G4 and am loving every second I get to spend on it... but I also have a Dual Athlon MP 1600+ (1.4GHz) and the Dual Athlon spanks the shit out of it at all the things that really matter (Quake 3 :P). Now, I am using Linux on the Athlon and OS X on the G4, so you can draw any comparisons you wish.

That having been said, the G4 is a fast machine. But... It was $4,000 with monitor ($500 Sony CPD-G400), whereas with a $1,000 monitor, my Dual Athlon was only $3,000. The only differing factors is that the Athlon has a GF3 Ti500 (the PowerMac has a GF3 regular), the G4 has 128 more megs of RAM (whoopty doo), and the G4 has an extra 60 gig drive. Now I'm not complaining - I think the machine was worth what I paid for it. But for $3,500 (computer itself), you'd think it should spank the shit out of a $2,000 computer (okay, $2,100 with shipping and all).

The point is, the G4 isn't that fast. Apple really would do better to put in some AMD processors, knock the price down a LEETLE and be able to claim that it really *did* burn Pentiums (instead of just with Adobe products).

    One can only hope...

WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?

Firstly, Jobs has been back at Apple since 1996/1997. Uh... one, two, TWELVE! No.

MacOS X wasn't intended to make a surge - rather, it was meant to gradually move into the market place. It is doing this - more people are moving over to MacOS X every day. I know because I'm a hard-core UNIX geek, and I bought a new iBook and a PowerMac G4 800DP. 40% of Apple's computer sales are from people who have never owned a Macintosh before.

iMac pre-sales are doing great. Demand has been, according to all sources, very high. Hence, they are not able to meet production demands right away, and some units will be shipped a bit later. All this because no one's buying, right?

Apple posted a $66 Million profit in the quarter ending September, and some $38 Million profit for the quarter ending December.

Between November 10 and December 30, more than 125,000 iPods were sold (one to me, too - listening to it right now - it is awesome) - at $400 each, that's some $50 Million in revenues. On a fucking MP3 player.

The Titanium G4 PowerBook has been selling like crazy. I know because I live near an Apple store, and every time I'm in there, someone else is buying one. No joke.

The new iBook has got to be one of the most successful consumer portables ever. And it hasn't even been out for a year yet. It is selling faster than you can imagine - and to big customers, too. Maine ordered 36,000 for their teachers and students. Some district in Virginia ordered 24,000.

All this because Apple & the Macintosh are dying?

Apple has been "dying" for the past 20 years. Shit, I used to spout the same BS. I hated Apple and the Macintosh. However, one can only lie to oneself for so long - with MacOS X and the new hardware lineup, Apple is churning the best personal computers in the industry today. One pays a little more (on the high-end machines), but they are rewarded with a premium machine - much like one pays more for a BMW than they would a Geo Metro.

Only two computer manufacturers are making money currently. Apple & Dell. To quote Steve Jobs, "Dell does it by being Wal Mart. We do it by innovating."

Well, however they do it, they're the only computer company doing anything exciting in the field today. One must applaud them for that.
