Gord has the straight scoop on the "sold at a loss" myth. According to Gord, the Xbox was the first console to sell at a loss.
See Acts of Gord for details. This is a funnny site.
When visiting prospective clients you must dress in a mannner that will assure the client that you are a professional. If in doubt about what is expected you can't go wrong with a business suit. Its stupid, but people will judge you on how you dress in the first few seconds that they meet you.
ISP's, and the big back bones should all be declared "common carriers". You CAN'T sue the phone company because you didn't like what some sid on their phone system because they are a "common carrier". The same laws shoyld apply to ISP's etc...
A rocket that can make it to the Moon can certainly make it to any part of Pakistan. Its great cover for doing balistic missle research. I hope that they do make it to the moon, and they are able to patch things up with Pakistan.
The ONLY reason that there is so much violence associated with the drug trade is that it is illegal. Being illegal only crimminals are in the bussiness, and being illegal the profit margins are huge - big enough to fiance a civil war.
How much violence has been associated with the booze trade since prohibition was repealed? None. How much violence was there during prohibition? Lots.
How hard is that to understand? The American war on drugs has not stopped even one person from getting any drug that they want. It has caused hundreds of thousands of harmless people to be jailed, enriched the most horriblely violent crimminals, and been a complete failure.
What you are saying is that web radio indirectly harms other purveyors of music. Indirect harm has NEVER been grounds for changing a law, suing someone etc...
This would be like going to the grocery store and trying to sue someone who bought the apple you wanted.
The RIAA does not "allow" songs to be broadcast. The law allows songs to be broadcast. The RIAA collcets fees on "behalf" of the artists (already successful artists mainly).
It can't be worse for fuel than using helicopters, which is quite common when logging rough mountain sides where road building is expensive, and has undersirable environmental effects (even more so than for flat land).
Some of my very old audio CD's are quite a bit heaverier than the new ones which all seem to be the same weight. The plastic seems just a bit thicker, but quite a bit heavier. Heavier enough compared to a normal CD to notice when you pick it up.
Anyone have info on changes in manufacturing od CD's over the years that might explain this?
At most stores you can only return a CD if it is DEFECTIVE. You can't return it because it sucks. At reputable stores, they will play the CD to check your claim if getting a cash refund, or allow you to exchange the bad one for a good copy of the same CD.
Cable and other broadband suppliers are worried about two things:
Getting sued
Bandwidth hogs
The getting sued problem is solved by making the law clear that anyone supplying internet access is a "common carrier" NOT a publisher. Web hosting services, newgroup etc.. are a bit of a grey area, but the law should make it very difficult to sue the hosting company, and have clear protections against frivolous charges of copyright infringement.
As for bandwidth hogs - stop advertising unlimited bandwidth unless it IS unlimited. This isn't as much as a problem for the adsl providers, but for the cable guys where many customers are basicly sharing a big star one hog can cut into a lot of customers bandwidth.
My ISP (adsl) gives me X bytes up/down for a flat rate. If I go over this generous limit then I pay extra. Wouldn't this solve the hog problem for the cable guys too?
They are not complicated, they are not "perfect". They are made by bored pranksters. Since when have randon collections of circles, lines, and rectangles qualified as "perfect".
The real answer is to create and provide content for free. Big corporate sites are for people who want mass market swill.
If you are looking for interesting information on virtually anything there is almost always a good 'hobby' site out there. I have a small web site for dos game programming. Its free and the traffic is low enough for me to pay for with a 'consumer grade' package. Hundreds of thousands of other people do the same thing for topics that they are interested in.
Besides, can anyone name a site that went subscription only that still exists?
The dmca and other bad American laws don't stop you from putting up your own free site. Why should we expect 'for profit' corporations to do anything for free? If web ads weren't working, they have to try something else. but if you want free content you shoold help by providing free content for others.
The USA is an empire in decline. It started with rapid growth and high ideals, but has reached a plateau where it seeks to protect what it has instead of working to garner new rewards. History has shown that empires that protect the current large commercial enterprises at the expense of up and coming enterprise are soon eclisped by others without a domestic monopoly to protect.
Spain plundered the new world, but did little to invest in its own growth. Spain was overtaken by a more vibrant English entrepeneurship. The English in turn were overtaken by the Americans. The USA is slowly shifting from invovation and competition to protecting its current "turf". The symptons are numerous and not confined to the high-tech sector: steel tarrifs, soft-wood lumber tarrifs, encryption restrictions, computer export restriction, copyright extension, patent extension into software and process, and of course the DMCA and its bretheren.
I believe that I will see the USA lose its place of dominance within my lifetime as it stifles its own inovators in favour of the monied and stagnat corporate giants who hold sway over short-sighted and venal politicians.
From a Canadian point of view, this is a good thing.
Anti-SLAPP legislation is a start, but in most of the world's court systems the loser pays ALL of the winners costs including legal fees. This stops most frivolous cases, but there are still a few SLAPP suits from large corporations.
In Canada all civil cases (even a divorce case) can include the awarding of costs. This gives people a bit of incentive to be reasonable.
America should consider making this change as it might help lesen the amount of litigation.
Ok, you buy neat toys there, but where are you going to go for practical advice when you want to enslave the world? Captain Electro is sharing his wizdom at The Electro Archive"
Why in the world would anyone go all the expense and bother of cloning to create an underclass when normal reproduction works just fine? In case you didn't know, slavery is alive and well still. Women and children are bought and sold in many countries. People willing to enslave others do not care where they get their slaves.
Clones do no pop out of vats as fully formed adults ready for the factory or prostitution. Clones need to be implanted in wombs, carried to full term, nursed, fed, educated, and raised just like any other child. You cannot tell by looking at a person that they are cloned. Cloning will not be an economically feasible way of enslaving anyone for a long, long time.
The problem with human cloning is that there is evidence that clones are 'born old'. That clones will age faster, and may suffer from ofther defects. Creating a human clone would involve hundreds of failures which isn't ethically acceptable to myself.
And, this article was about growing organs from stem cells - not cloning.
If we are able to gentically modify ourselves into a sperate race that usurps our current position at the top of the food chain then we deserve whatever happens to us. I would only be sad if we wiped out all intelligent life, not if we helped the next step in evolution along.
If the encoced body is tramsmited at the speed of light, well then of course it depends on far you are being sent.
On the other hand, if you entangle the raw materials, send half the entangled atoms to the destination, then scan and 'teleport' via 'spooky action at a distance' then it would be instaneous. Doing this with atoms, as opposed to photons, is a long ways off.

Global warming is the result of an overzealous plan to prevent the next ice-age. The world-wide Illuminatia who only work for the good of all mankind (making a huge profit is just a happy side-effect) acted decisively to prevent a looming ice-age in the 1970's by promoting the use of flourocarbons throughout the world. Alas, the plan has worked too well, and now they face the taunting task of reversing their previous plan!
Melting the northern ice, most of which is floating, won't raise the sea level as it is already in the sea. Only when great chunks of glaciers and ice that are on LAND melt (or slide into the ocean) will the sea level rise. Antartica has lots of ice on its land, but the recent breaking up of some of the ice-shelf, which floats, had no effect on the sea level.
Tipping should be eliminated. It lets employers hire people at very low wages, and lets them post menu's with artifically low prices. It leaves the employees at the mercy of fickle customers. Restraunts should do away with tipping and pay a fair wage.

When you use a time machine you change history a little bit. These changes continue until one of the changes "uninvents" the time machine.
