I wouldn't call it a waste of time. It would be an incredible learning experience and loads of fun, too. Note that the authors are recent grads (or are about to graduate). Starting a project like this will definitely help them along. You're right, though, this project has a very small chance of success in competing in the video card industry, but it could grow into something cool nevertheless.

This is actually something I've thought about doing. Maybe recording an audio-only DVD that incorporates this. Next time I record with my band I'll see what I can do :)

Though I admit, I don't see a lot of artists doing anything like this any time soon. But it may catch on at some point.

I basically set a price at which I'm willing to buy something, and I set it very low. For example, for the last year I waited for an 80 gig EIDE hard drive to hit $100, and when it did, I bought it. Similarly I'm waiting for a good $100 motherboard and processor combo to come a long.

I guess "beans" is too general a term.

I've tried food combination myself, and some of it works, some of it doesn't really make a difference. The mixing carbs and proteins rule didn't really didn't make a difference for me, and I've found plenty of "health experts" who contradicted the rule and said it was fallacious. To eat all meals completely devoid of either carbs or protein doesn't make sense to me. I would be malnourished if I did this. Even the vegatables I typically eat have both protein and carbs.

There are some parts of food combining that are true for me. For example, if I eat bananas and oranges together (sweet fruits and acid fruits), I usually have indigestion.

I guess whatever works for you. Everyone's diet needs are different. I just can't imagine life without beans.

Beans alone break the first rule of food combining; Don't eat carbs and proteins together.

I'm familiar with the "rules of food combining" ideas, though I don't really think it works. But in any case, you're misinterpreting it. Let me quote directly from A Complete Guide to Nature Cure's chapter on food combining:

"The most important rule for combining foods is to avoid mixing protein and carbohydrate concentrated foods. Although every food contains some protein , those regarded as protein concentrated foods demand the longest digestive time."

By these rules, what you are avoiding is meals where you are eating both protein concentrated and carbohydrate concentrated foods. Key word is "concentrated." Beans aren't protein concentrated. They have high carbs and are low in protein. They don't "rot" inside your body. They are in general a great source of carbs and very good for you.

It sounds to me like you read a lot of questionable information and took it as truth. Don't believe everything you read. Give beans a try again, they really are good foods.

I never have gas because of any kind of beans, even refried beans. I usually eat raw vegatables (spinach, carrots, lettuce, etc) with my meals which seems to help digestion. Just out of curiosity, what is your diet like?

BTW That nature cure book I linked to has a chapter on amino acids.

OTOH, Linux and other Unices, the administrator (root) is strongly discouraged to be the 'user'. And the 'user' has no direct access to the machine. He can hurt himself, but not the machine.

Still, once you compromise a user on the system, its sometimes trivial to acquire root access. Also, with Linux/UNIX there are daemons/services running as root which can be exploited. Maybe security has gotten a little better over the years, but just 5 or 6 years ago, UNIX and Linux were hackers playgrounds of sorts. There were many many exploitable systems out there. Of course a lot of this was admins who left holes open and were slow in applying patches. I haven't been into security since then, so I can't really say what the state of UNIX/Linux security is. All I can say is that it wasn't always very secure. Linux used to be well known for being full of vulnerabilities, a new one being discovered every week it seemed.

And since it is open source, the fixes are much more likely to come sooner and be better done.

Very true... This is what makes the difference. 5 or 6 years ago I didn't hear much of Windows machines getting cracked (maybe because I wasn't interested in Windows security). This may be because of "security through obscurity." While people were looking at GNU/Linux's source and exploiting the crap out of it, the Windows vulnerabilities were hiding out, hoping that no one would discover them. Linux ended up getting a very thorough security inspection, and thus resulted in a more secure OS (in theory anyhow). Still, I don't believe in absolute security and believe there are plenty of holes in Linux yet to be discovered (and some new ones that may be created later).

I can't really say whether Linux and UNIX are more secure than Windows. We can only speculate. However, open source is a huge advantage in terms of maintaining security.

Although this particular device is overkill and too costly, things like basic water cooling are good even for the non-overclocker. I want a well-cooled quiet machine, and that's what water-cooling does for you.

Spending a little of money on cooling is generally a good investment. Because you can reuse your cooling setup with each new processor you purchase. The only probably may occur if your new processor and heatsink/waterblock aren't compatible. But Socket A has been going for a while..
