So be warned, any link that a post in this thread links to could conceivably redirect you to a dreaded goatse.cx link.
If you are logged in, there is a setting you can adjust in preferences under the comments tab. If you scroll all the way down, You'll see this radio button:
Display Link Domains? (shows the actual domain of any link in brackets)
If you choose "Always show link domains", you always will.
However, one of the super-parent's major gripes was the learning part.
Actually, there are 3 features that help here.
First, it's a regular universal, meaning 90% of everything *just* *works*. The time you spend is in customizing and re-keying. The only item I had to actually setup myself was the TiVo (horrible oversite).
Second, it has a 6 month retention without the batteries.
Third, you can set 2 mx-500's next to each other and type "transfer". It transfers everything.
I thought about this, and I don't know if I would. Maybe. I have a PVR, and I usually watch the commercials. Too lazy to fast forward.
But if I get a penny for watching the commercials, I'm going to press play without even watching the crap. I'll find the most ad-intensive programs out there and watch them again and again (with the TV off). I'll probably write some computer program to handle the IR rewind to watch commercials again and again.
Hell, I should be able to gross at *least* 1k per day. That's quit the day job cash.
So I certainly like your idea. I'm sure I'd make an interesting profile for them to analyze.
How come they dont analyze how bad music is nowadays as the reason for the decline in CD sales?
From the article:
I mention that there are these supposed instances of doldrums in musical creativity and you read about them from time to time. But it's a hard thing, at the moment, to measure that.
I've got a jukebox of my CDs ripped, so I can just pick and choose from the whole library (27 GB or so at this point). Friends are always picking songs and asking "do you have..", which leads to downloading mp3s & adding them on.
Downloaded mp3s are handy and quick, but they aren't generally very good quality, and loose mp3s are "unwieldy". So I tend to actually *buy* the CD, both for the additional tracks and for the ability to rip them the way I want them ripped. This is especially true of singles/mixes.
Where I think the whole file sharing really helps is I *constantly* find older/newer/different music that I've forgotten about or didn't know existed.. different mixes, original recordings, other artists.. all types of things.
Since I've started downloading mp3s my cd collection has consistantly increased.. because I'd rather know it was ripped right and I like having an archived copy. Before filesharing I was basically done buying CDs. I've probably bought 2-4 every week since I started downloading.
I'm sure there are people out there that aren't buying any of their music, but it certainly isn't everyone.
I buy a lot more cds because of file sharing. And I've completely lost the feeling of "buyers remorse" over buying CDs. Even when I buy one that only had 1 good track on it. Because I wanted that track.
Well this sucks, yesterday you told me I needed a better graphics card to really enjoy Quake 3, and now I'm hearing I probably stuck with ATI.
Good lord I hate ATI. Just once could they make a frickin driver that works? I'm sure they will work much harder now that they've lost their biggest competitor.
*sigh*
If quake 3 would have come out a bit sooner maybe VisionTek could have pulled out.
Are you planning on investing a bunch of money in this or do you just want something that will work?
There are plenty of pointers above for expensive solutions, so here's a cheap solution that works for most things you want to pack.
Get a box big enough to put the screen in. Get some garbage bags. Get some Great Stuff (available at any hardware store).
Put a garbage bag in the box, put the screen in the box, now fill the bag with great stuff. Fold the bag over so the goo doesn't come out & lay the box on it's side w/ the screen laying on the bag full of great stuff.
Put another bag on the other side. Fill it with great stuff. Wait. Ta-da. Just slide out both bags together and there you have it.
Works with just about anything, totally re-useable, and works pretty damn well.
ASP/PHP/CGI pages will go down a lot quicker cos they're not 'dumb' html pages - every hit means somebody's box has to do a load of backend processing.
Note that slashdot is running.pl files for everything, which is effectively CGI (well, I suppose it might be mod_perl, I've never looked).
If you dig around, you'll see that there are quite a few references to.php and.asp being disliked by the slash authors.
I'm convinced that the reason why Taco doesn't bother to cache these pages is that he enjoys the notoriety of the "Slashdot Effect." The excuses in the FAQ are really lame.
I'm convinced that Taco does this because it makes him smile to link to an asp page off of slashdot, especially when using the word "cool" somewhere in the blurb.
It always seems to be asp or occasionally php pages that go down in less than 90 seconds..
I swear I have actually *seen* this with software. There was a sticker on the CD case which said "Warning: Breaking this seal constitutes agreement with the licensing agreement included inside."
I don't remember what it was, probably atlas 1996 or something similar. I remember it came with a sound card I bought retail.
At the time I didn't care and opened it right up, now I wish I would have kept that item..
I just figured they were going to fill the bus will members of the MPAA and RIAA.
Why else would it be on slashdot?
Of course there is a best time to buy new technology- as soon as the new credit card arrives, and before you've run up a tab on it.

Just get one, you'll never regret it.
Don't complain about your universal remote, buy a good one (the right one) and be done with it. Get a MX-500.
Learning, backlit, programmable out the wazoo, controls 10 devices, and did I mention learning?
I've not had a single issue since I bought the thing. It kicks butt, and if you dig around I'm sure you'll find a good deal on it.
It replaces up to 10 remotes. And it does it right. Every single button learnable. I love my mx-500..
Okay, so how is this a new way to easily pirate software?
Is mixing a 5.1 audio stream, burning it to CD, and listening to it pirating software?
Tell me what I'm missing here. I don't see how it is pirating or how it is software.
Works as advertised on USAToday, not as on /.
It kills me that your email is from physics.uc.edu..

Taxes cover sewage/waste disposal. You pay taxes on the water bill. You pay tax when you buy a toilet, or a toilet repair kit.
Sorry.
Why is this interesting?
Trials are expensive. They are going to have to get the money from somewhere.
And Microsoft has proven beyond the shadow of a doubt that you can get away with a lot while you drag out the court case. At least for a while.
The problem with this solution is
1) proving your research
2) getting back
1) has seemed to be a concern. And come to think of it, 2) doesn't sound so bad.
So could someone *please* build this guy a time machine? And send a copy to the RIAA so they can jump over to a stream where they won already?

The kind that went for a peek and saw the principal/janitor/priest staring back?
Speaking as someone who is still waiting for that first cup of coffee, it looks just fine.
Come on, it's *slashdot* and it's *early* (at least here). If you want good grammer, I think you're at the wrong place at the wrong time.
Profit!

Sad, sad day.
From my dictionary:
Lifetime: n. The period of time during which property, an object, a process, or a phenomenon exists or functions.
I'm sure it will still function as long as it would have anyway. I don't see how VisionTek going away would change that.

I believe the plan is to show our support with a big "Thank You" on the front page of slashdot.
So yes, they will certainly be aware. Or at least their server admins will be aware.
Pity they don't serve ads.
Note that slashdot is running
