  2. You Gotta Breeze Pretty Fast on World Of Warcraft Alpha Explored, Blizzard Quizzed · · Score: 4, Interesting

Blizzard has claimed that WoW will have more content than Asheron's Call (original) at launch than AC has today. I've played AC for 2 years and never touched on 10% of the content there was just that much.

Considering that AC vs Warcraft though you have to understand that Warcraft's world has been around since the late 90's and has plenty of lore and history to build on. AC they're still building the story on a monthly basis. This was one strenght of Galaxies also being that the story has been around in this case for ages and thus they can spend more time on content than working on the timelines.

More history always makes it easier to put in more content.

Still have to see what content they do put in vs what should be there already.

Trust me in a few weeks SWG is going to have a Imperial Crackdown and us Rebels will be in a bit of a hurt... Do I care? Not really gives me more imps to kill. And there has been no uproar from the Rebel playerbase or neutrals about it as it's really a part of the game.

GameSpy needs to understand that irresponsible reviews like this really are not helpful to the players or the company. I would not expect a alpha build (I have played alphas and betas of many MMO's) to have much in the way of custom modifications of characters becuase alpha's are focused on gameplay which is far harder to debug than putting a beard on a dwarf.

Futhermore if anyone reads books about Dwarves and Elf's then they might understand that the two races that once were welcome as friends are much more wary of eachother in many of those books. Even Legolas and Gimli were not overly fond of eachother at their first meeting.

And Blizzard please keep up the hard work. If you want a proper review of your game there are a few dozen of us that are waiting over at Wow Warcry.

Yes 5 years ago this would of been nice with all the games that required to have the CD inserted to play but nowdays that's just not the case anymore. Most games nowdays install completely to your hard drive and then you just stuff it back in the box and put it on a bookshelf.

On the flipside it is also much harder to just copy a game and give it to a friend. With keys and internet play and phone home features those who share their keys risk getting their keys disabled.

  14. User Perception on G5 vs Opteron, Finally · · Score: 2, Insightful

Everyone can compare numbers until pigs fly but what about user perception? Yes it's great X component makes X application run faster. But as a whole who's out there using these applications on a daily basis? What about from power on to usability (of which many users just leave the pc running) or how long it takes from click until your email application fires up and starts accessing email?

It's really these things that users care about not the 1% that may be using specialized applications that were complied to take advantage of these processors.

The G5 will obviously have a advantage due to the OS being tweaked for it and the Opteron will have a advantage if the applications are compiled 64bit. Of which were any of these applications full 64bit or recompiles.

There is also a world of difference in the applications depending on which compiler you run. Intel compilers are vastly superior to many run of the mill compilers and will generally run better on Intel systems. AMD and Apple probably have their own compilers and more than likely encourage the use of them. Now since application developers will use what's cheapest and is most stable across platforms you'll probably see the differences you're seeing. Any native Apple application will obviously be done with a apple compiler. Photoshop may have been done with a generic thus better performance on x86/64 vs it compiled for a G5 processor which Apple may or may not release all specs for proper compilation with a generic.

Either way comparing them in this manner is nothing but a mess of varibles unless you're using everything the same across the board.

Better to compare bandwidth and other functions of the processors and not varible application performance where you're not sure of the breeding of code.
