PCI Express is one peice of the superfast home computer puzzle but where's the solid state drives that made all the headlines from last year? I may have a ATI 9700 Pro but I'm reluctant to upgrade to a AMD 64 system due to uncertain decisions in the market lately.

    We have

ATX Redesign ATB? and were seeing new cases

New motherboards will follow that with PCI-X

AMD Possibly giving Intel the smackdown with a long awaited frequency increase (If you dont realize AMD proc's can beat a Intel proc on task basis but not freq based benchmarks.. Match frequencies and you'll blow them out of the water)

Solid State Drives are supposed to pop up here somewhere. Imagine the possibilities!

Of course gaming may force my hand this fall with the new releases of MMORPG's such as WOW since I dont tolerate any lag from my machines in these games unless it's network related. Just hope those Shuttle AMD 64 XPC's come down in price.

though KDE is not the chosen GUI of the UserLinux project. This is an
option for any UserLinux service provider.

For some reason it makes sense. In a capitalist way Perens will make money by including KDE into Userlinux. Obviously this customer must be worth some support money if he backtracked this quickly.

However he may have to compete with Novell on this since SuSE is predominately KDE based and if he wants to take from that pool of potentials (Novell customers reluctant to switch distros if that means a new desktop for their users to get acquainted with)

Of course Bruce may or may not have been motivated to create UserLinux if it held no real benefit to him.

I'm about 10 sec from enabling a SPF filter http://sfp.pobox.com to reject anything not specifically listed in the spf list from that site and other spf enabled sites.. this would definately weed out many of the virii that are just flying from user pc's.

  14. The Real Problem on A Thoughtful Look at Indian Outsourcing · · Score: 1

Is the outsourcing will not quit anytime soon and that american wages continue to lower yet there's no correction in the currency to support americans with lower wages. Just look at the fact that nowdays both parents have to work just to provide a comfortable lifestyle for themselves and their kids.

Greenspan is worried about deflation but does he not know that americans are making less and many are unemployeed so things are really getting more expensive. He's looking at the wrong pricetags here. Gas prices are over a 1.50 is most locations and in most cases are much higher than they were before either gulf war. To top it off the press and oil companies "Claim" the weather, weak dollar and supply shortages are the problem here. When was the last time the press reported on a oil line sabotage in Iraq recently? The oil's flowing but it's not getting cheaper like it was supposed to.

With energy prices rising it's increasingly harder for companies to pass discounts to the consumers. Much so if the govt were to suddenly raise Minimum wage 50 cents it would just cause a inflation of prices to make up with the forced paying of workers more money.

I would like to see something in the nature of a area where all executable commands for any user software get put into.. Many programs today install theirselves into various /usr /usr/share /usr/local it just goes on and on. Reguardless of where the program installs itself I think a top level directory /usr/software where all programs put in a link back to it's working directory and main executable for all programs..

That way all users know that their programs reside in /usr/software and it makes it easier for plugin/mod authors to know where things are.

Either way if this is not feasable then it's time to standardize where things are going.. Windows has it's Program Files which went a long way towards fixing user confustion :) where people now know their programs (With very few exceptions) now end up.

It's time to write your elected legislature and tell them you're tired of the patents and the system needs a overhaul. The USPTO thinks that they are not responsible for doing any simple research on a patent and that the Judicial system will sort things out. Which just costs American taxpayers money where the patent system is paid for partially by patent fees. Raise the fees so they're in accordance with what the person/corporation makes and maybe the problem will go away.
