  1. Newt Gingrich is an obscene assclown on Newt Gingrich Says Free Speech May Be Forfeit · · Score: 1

This is absolutely obscene. The US Constitution was founded to prevent clowns like Gingrich from taking away our essential liberties in this way. I would argue that the true purpose of our armed forces is to prevent external and internal powers from robbing us of freedom. (Of course I am not referring to the current conflicts.) Therefore when Gingrich and others of his kind say things like this, they are NOT supporting the troops. They are dishonoring everything our country and our armed forces are supposed to represent.

  4. You're not going to like the answer... on Uneducated IT Managers, and How to Deal? · · Score: 1

    Some of your options:

    - Some people might tell you to "grow the fuck up and deal with it." Well, this is certainly something to consider. You will encounter people like your current boss everywhere. It takes a certain amount of maturity to appreciate that these kinds of people are almost universal. But it also takes an incredible amount of patience to deal with them. And if they're paying you the right kind of money, you might consider putting up with it. But that's a decision only you can make.

    - Yet some other people might say, "Rat that guy out, destroy his job, get him fired." Assuming he's not a major shareholder or owner of the company, you can collect enough evidence of his incompetency to blow him out of the water completely, getting rid of him for good. And his replacement might be even worse! But would you be OK with that? Again, that's a decision only you can make.

    - The next option is to just find another job. Start looking, find one, then bail. Quitting is tough -- you have to have enough money, and it can really throw a monkey wrench into your life. This is probably a decision only you can make.

    - I guess the last thing I can think of is "Become a manager yourself!" I tend to favor this option. I'll bet you this assclown is making more money than you are. Ever wonder why? YOU need to be doing what he's doing. Then you can do it right. Work your way up, take classes to collect whatever lame-ass credentials are necessary, then step in and take over. Some people aren't into management. I guess it's a decision only you can make.

Why were so many Slashdot readers willing to swallow the original farcical Google story hook, line and sinker? Was it their above-par critical thinking skills?

As for Cmdr Taco, 10 minutes' worth of followup investigation would have cleared the issue up before it got posted. Instead he assumed the Bush administration was behind it. Did he do it because he was a big fan the Bush administration? Hey, I'm no fan of Bush either, but he has a responsibility to investigate this stuff BEFORE posting it.

This is just another sorry episode in Slashdot's embarrassing journalistic track record.

  11. H2G2: It changes every time!!! on H2G2 Cast Finalized, Starts Shooting in April · · Score: 5, Insightful

Throughout the history of H2G2, Douglas Adams adapted and re-adapted his works to multiple media. Starting with a radio show, moving to books and TV, even a computer game -- with every adaptation, he fearlessly changed it around as he saw fit, to embrace the strengths of the medium. The computer game is not the same material as the book, which is totally different from the radio series, etc. etc.

In other words, The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy series is all about change. If the movie is 100% faithful to the books, I'll be very disappointed. I want them to switch it around a little bit, give us some of the stuff we love, but also some new stuff too.

I want to see the wonderful spirit of H2G2 and the sense of humor of Douglas Adams accurately reflected in these movies. If that's done, I don't care if Ford is black, if Arthur Dent is Latino, if Trillian is played by Queen Latifah or if Fenchurch is played by Harvey Fierstein.

  21. Two thumbs down: a review of the "review" on Decipher · · Score: 2, Insightful

That was hardly a review, just a few sentences of praise followed by a lengthy plot summary.

Sure, the plot sounds interesting, but how does the guy write? WHAT did you find so deep about it? Did you like the author's writing style? How did he convey emotion, depict setting, build tension, describe the characters? Is it dense prose? Technical? Abstract? For a lot of people, these elements are as important as a complex plot.

All you did was give away the ending for most people without really explaining what was great about the book. The level of detail in your summary was totally unnecessary; you've actually done a tremendous disservice to anyone who might want to read this book. And since your intended audience is people who HAVEN'T read the book yet, a "Warning -- spoilers within" label doesn't automatically give you carte blanche to sloppily regurgitate the entire plot.

This would have been a great submission -- if we were talking about a high school newspaper.

  22. Opposing technology because of its POTENTIAL harm on Wal-Mart Cancels RFID Trial · · Score: 2, Insightful

The RIAA, MPAA and others are opposed to P2P technology due to its potential for misuse. So how is your anti-RFID stance any different? From what I understand, there are plenty of very legitimate uses for RFID technology.

  23. Re:boxes on Wal-Mart Cancels RFID Trial · · Score: 3, Insightful

    Will the FUD never stop?

The general anti-RFID sentiment goes beyond FUD, in my opinion, and approaches neo-luddite proportions. The level of some of the paranoia on Slashdot is pretty damn astonishing. There's definitely a bandwagon effect, and people seem to jump on to causes without really applying much sense.

From what I've seen (including this most previous Slashdot article and its use of the word "unfortunately" when referring to Wal Mart's continued use of RFID), people don't want RFID technology to be used, deployed or further developed -- in any way, at all. All because it could potentially be used to invade their privacy.

So -- they are opposing the technology, just because of the potential for misuse.

Yet Slashdot regularly slams RIAA, the MPAA and others for opposing technology (P2P) due to its potential for misuse.

    The hypocrisy is obvious.
