  1. Re:I knew it... on Warner Backs Blu-Ray. End Times For HD-DVD? · · Score: 3, Insightful

This simply is not worth worrying about. I picked up the exact same deal as you and am happy. Just remember:

    * The format war is *not* over because a couple of 'experts' say so
    * Until the war is over, don't build a large library (rent)
    * The cost of the player for a few years use is modest
    * Amazon started selling discounted Bluray players with the same 10 disc offer a couple of weeks after the HD-DVD offer, so it is not part of a dumping scheme by either format.

In the short term you get to enjoy 1080P video and TrueHD audio now for a low price. I see a lot of postings here about there not being a significant difference between SD and HD discs, but I see a huge difference. I was sceptical before I got the player, but now I am a believer and have no buyers remorse even *if* HD-DVD goes away after a few years.

In short: Don't worry, be happy.

I don't think most people believe the government has no role in regulating some aspects of technology, they just wish any such assertion of power is done with the consultation of experts and the consent of the people.

As for health care, if I had to choose between control by government or the current control by corporations that place profit above the provision of actual care, I would go with the government. They at least have some small accountability to the public.

I assume an archival film copy would not be frequently played and would hopefully be used with specialized copying equipment that is kinder than the average projector. When I worked as a projectionist I never saw film burst into flame, but the mechanical wear (Century projector and Christie platters) would chew up a print quick enough. A year old print of Chainsaw Massacre (1974 version) I had to deal with was more splice than film after repeated repairs.

    Wrong again.

Acknowledging that one option is less damaging than another says nothing absolute about that option such as it being 'OK'.

That's why some decisions are hard. The available options suck, but some options are better than others. If the choices are between 'good' and 'evil' the decision is trivial.

Take for example Aron Ralston, a hiker who cut off his own arm after being trapped under a boulder. Cutting off his arm was better than dieing of starvation or exposure. But nobody is saying that cutting off an arm is 'OK'.

Mulching is one of the simplest and most beneficial things you can do for your home garden. As mulches slowly decompose, they provide organic matter which helps keep the soil loose. This improves root growth, increases the infiltration of water, and also improves the water-holding capacity of the soil.
