OS X boots to the desktop on my Powerbook in 25 seconds...
on my optimized kernel on ubuntu i boot certainly under 1 minute which is fast enough for software that didn't cost me a dime. and i haven't even started to optimize the services yet. apple has done that for you. if people would want a superfast booting ubuntu that doesn't do all the regular checks at bootup, it be almost as fast, certainly under 40 seconds.
an average raid card takes often longer than 25 seconds to initialize and check the proper working states of all attached hard disks on the desktop/entry level server machine....
leaving that aside, after 25 seconds, you may have the desktop in front of you, but the background services are still starting, so i'm sorry to disappoint you but you're the one who is delusional.
your superfast powerbook shares all the delusional effects created by mac and the slowness of all software that we use. getting the picture isn't finished booting.
yor powerbook software from apple KNOWS what hardware it runs on, its BUILT for that, ubuntu has to check each time if the damn user has changed memory/harddisk/cdrom/. so you are comparing ferraris and jets and find out that jets have less traffic delays, hooray eh ? snap out from it.
i guess this scaling depends, a 4way machine should handle multiprocess better than multithreading since processes don't have to be synchronized all the time like the threads need to. i dont know apache's implementation, therefor this may not be true in the apache case. synchronizing threads over 4 cpu's definitely is a worse idea than having separate processes running, because the last ones don't have to interchange data all the time (they can but they don't have to).
besides, doesnt 2.0 choose the process/thread model ?
nvm. i still sit on 1.3 , it works and i have no time to reconfigure and experiment right now.
don't know about you but if it comes to windows machines, microsoft and antivirus, the word beta just scares the shit out of me.
i will still suggest some other antiviruses to my friends at least until this stuff becomes stable... stable like "bash" stable and not like IE stable... which can pretty much be never/ever...
this kind of hype reminds of the dotcom bubble that exploded some years ago:p
i think thinkgeek.com does experience increased sales from online ads, however regular industries that dont push their online services, hardly gain anything, most of what's seen on the screen is forgotten when you turn it off. if you think it's some other way around, tell me what was the 5th banner back that you saw on slashdot.
currently the webservices have increased into a more mature stage, but i still think it will just explode like the previous bubble, only this time it will take longer (and since big time investments are in here, it will hurt more).
ps. the money is being spent into google (this is the latest trend you know...)
i just thought that it may look cool on the huge screen displays on the streets that are powered by windows... nice full screen kiosk mode pr0n all over the place....
so you see, switching to linux doesnt always pay off, because you miss the Incredible pr0n Explorer alias IE!
not telling the whole truth seems to beir their "thing", they have a "hacker proof" website (the logo is there, you must believe it, altrhough it runs on a regular windows server) , and they do "discount" schemes...
they dont really lie into your face, they just hide the "non important" facts...:)
more over, look at the power figures of the processors, you can't really put that thing in your notebook just yet, unless you run it from your car battery.
i must admit however, this is a huge improvement for intel, cause unlike his last efforts, this processor really seems to be worth the price if it's power figures are cut a bit back. and ofcourse they will have to cut the pricetag alot too. this thing will be very expensive at start.
for now, i still go with turion laptops. and not because i can mock on the current intel dudes that mine is 32 bits longer than yours:p, but because i can get my software ready for the 64 bit invasion that's coming up. i see no reason at all to get myself any 32bit platform anymore. i saw pre xt machines and their software, i saw xt-s and 286 's and their softwares, i saw 386 coming, and right now buying an 32bit machine is a parallel to buying an overclocked 286 when there were 386-s with 387's features available (this 386/87 extensions thing is a quite long story...)
numbers great ? if i have a mail address, lets say john.doe@nsa.gov , then it's easy to remember for my friend what to type into his messenger to add me even 1 day later. can you remember 567452352362 one day later ? didnt think so.
i used icq too, but this number mess was a... was a real mess and most of my friends dont use anymore. so it's kindof out-of-the-picture. haven't checked it lately neither. it had good functions all the years back, most instant messengers have them now.
comfort is what counts, windows is comfortable for some, they use it, msn is comfortable for some, they use it. icq is not comfortable for me, i don't use it, and at least in my country it looks like most people dont use it...
yep, it's not the first time the ice age is coming and it wont be the last (unless we blow this place up). but this thing will be a bit bigger than snow on some mountains. this will be like... a damn frozen europe.... this means no french wines anymore and a lot of frozen norwegians (yeah, norway's climate is totally built up on the gulf streams, if those stop, the place will be really cold). the "funniest" aspect of this is that we need more power to heat this place up to live here and therefor we'll create even more pollution when the iceage comes... high five to all suv owners, you just made my day...
humans are not responsible for the iceage, but we are responsible for the fact that it's coming a lot sooner than it should...
i hope the fact that europe freezes shows the world that we should cut back a bit on the pollution thingy. that should teach them all !
erm.. oh holy {censored}, i AM in europe, last minute to make a run for south ?
wouldn't it make more sense to just use encrypters on the phone ? so they can listen to these buzzing sounds in their black minivan all night long if they want to...
i know i would use them if the feds would try to snoop me. (and no, these are not so easy to hack/crack as it seems on the tv:p)
now i'm gonna have to check when was the last time when i used a wire phone.. can't remember ^^.
but like slashdot, you can get it for free without paying any $ to bill or steve.
and unlike steve's and bill's initiative, if linux is broken, YOU CAN CODE AND FIX IT, unlike windows, where you just bash your head against the wall trying to figure out what ERROR 123DEAD means....
linux is not perfect, none claims it is, but it is pretty good and stable stuff compared to it's commercial alternatives.
u must be from a really wicked neighbourhood.... over here, tequila is quite expensive so people who can afford it usually don't go as low as fighting and vomiting after "overdrinking"....
we have cheat vodka for that...
and tequila with all it's drinking traditions (lemon, salt etc.) is much more fun and romantic than most of the other drinks
Most people aren't interested in programming their own toys.
Sure, but it wasn't the "most people" that lego had in mind as targets when they created this mindstorm line in the first place:)
Anyway, i'm pretty sure there are tens of thousands of people around who would like to program their toys. But for that we need at least one company that makes toys that can be rearranged for our needs and that can be programmed in a normal way.
One thing where they went wrong imho is that they put the computing "power" on a little pic chip in the robot itself. I would prefer a docking stations (which could also be the recharger for batteries), running on something more decent, like a 486/pentium class machine running some flavour of linux with 16-32 megs of ram. now that machine would be responsible for the "thinking" and the robot itself just does what the dock tells it to over the radio. This way i could have complicated applications outside of my pc. That's what i'd like... ofcourse some other people like to count pic registers and program in some weird lego basic, but imho that is just a waste of time, too much energy spent on much nothin.
Hmm, i didn't read out the "only enlightenment has it" from the second post above, overreacting perhaps ? He just had 2 clauses in a row, he didn't claim that enlightenment is superior with this feature that everyone actually has (even windowmaker...)
Anyway, last time i checked, enlightenment was much rocket science about much nothing, for the speed choose sawfish/sawmill or the fluxbox... twm is just a disaster in the 21st century, so keep your fingers away from that.
If you like lots of features choose kde or gnome. I chose kde, i chose life...
if you really think that khazakstan is a good place to produce biodiesel, you should check that map again:)
most of europe is ideal for the biodiesel business because the plants needed for it can grow all over the place, the same for the central and northen part of united states. australia and southern part of south america can do it as well. but khazakstan is a bad choice, cause the plant can't grow on desertly looking landspots nor on mountains.
you just need a normal field with enough humidity to grow it. not some extra special place.
unlike java apps, the ASP.NET, ADO.NET, and C# Windows apps are very hard to run on all my *bsd, linux and solaris boxes, dont you think ?
and out here on the borders of europe, the microsoft support can't tell you the difference of a mouse and a keyboard, so the quality of microsoft support varies a damn lot.
b) java with proper hw acceleration is as fast as anything else in your mobile. you are still stuck in the awt&swing are slow view of java, dude u are lagging back like 5-6 years, time to move on.
choosing java is definitely better than choosing your own very specific subset of c++ libraries that everyone would have to port their games on just to get it running on 1 specific phone. think big.
Ofcourse my donna, kyle minoke and anymen will follow short after that...
They should make their album's more attractive, add some real touchable value to them. Like a little madonna calendar or stuff like that. This anti piracy fight is as effective as killing all the mosquitos in africa with 1 wrecked pan.
Ps. i really buyed an album from the shop today, i rule !
you forgot to add that real programming languages are pretty much backward compatible, whereas php's backward compatibility doesn't just suck, it's nearly non-existant. references, oop parent class calls, global variables etc. this language gets ever more messed up with every new version and with zillion little configuration flags that affect the very basic functions and breaks down even the most patient code.
php has it's good sides but it the long run it's definitely the loser platform from my point of view. even perl is more stable and readable after 3 years of support on the same code (on php you either do very expensive upgrades to the software every time there are some major changes or you do cheap fixes and the code turns into a mess).
have you ever tried to read a well organized OOP php source that is supposed to work with every version from 4.0 to 5.x ? nope ? give it a try, i'm sure you will fall off the fgging chair.
i suggest you use something else, use python, use ruby, if you need to kiss your bosses ass you might even use java but keep your fingers away from php while you can.
I think there must be better ways to fight malaria.
from tfa
"The way to control mosquitoes is to go to these ponds and float a harmless oil," that will suffocate the larvae when they come up for air, he said. "It seems like an awful lot of trouble and expense to do otherwise."
wtg dudes, seems like they have too much of fresh and not spoiled water over there. from the chemical point of view, there are as many harmless oils as there are nature friendly suv's. and you are forgetting the fact that in the very same lakes are breeding places for other breeds that save our butt from lots of trouble through eating other insects and having a competitive race for the food with really nasty insects ?
i think they will figure out this much later.
Can't people really create some kind of protection against malaria ? Here we are sitting behind multimillion megahertzed machines chatting over network that has been dragged with cables and satellites all over the world, and we can't find 1 civilized way to fight a diseasy without killing entire other species by it ? Give the medical institutions some proper budget and let them invent a malaria that is harmless to people but that does push out the malaria that we have right now, this should work, no ?
and does malaria have some kind of balancing effect on the rest of the mammals ? like regulating the count of animals so the planet wouldn't be overpopulated there by them and eaten "clean" ? no reason to stab ourselves in the back because it looked like a good idea in the first place.
