1. Price comparison - Aim this at the barcode in store, and have it search Newegg/Amazon/whatever immediately for comparable prices.
2. Preview content - play clips from songs while you look at CDs or display a trailer for a movie
3. Magazines - aim at the Economist (or Seventeen or whatever) and get links to similar online content
4. Compatibility - Point at a wireless network product and see what technology it runs. Point at a motherboard and see if your current hard drive format is supported.
If they open the API, then there will be endless possibilities.
And for your CueCat haters, it didn't work because 1. It wasn't mobile, 2. Hardly anyone supported it and 3. They didn't want anyone using it for what it wasn't "officially" designated. Solve these problems on MS Tag and you'll have an awesome service.
"Three hundred years ago, the dreams of a flying machine finally seemed to be coming true after a successful test. An article in Nature, however, suggests that there's reason to be pessimistic. Ever since Bernoulli's principle was discovered, many have been hoping that this discovery would turn the dream into reality. Pugno, however, argues that inevitable lack of pure steel means that such a machine simply wouldn't be strong enough. Even if flawless steel could be made for the flying machine, damage from wind and even erosion by sand would render it's wings weak. It would seem that sci-fi will never be anything other than what it is: a fiction."
You have your terms way out of whack. "Liberals" want to further change in laws and societal norms. "Conservatives" want to keep things as they are. Suddenly instituting automated survellience over the nation is not "conservative," it is radical*.
Don't get caught into the "US VS THEM" mindset! It has only brought us to where we are now.
*and irresponsible and unnecessary; but I digress.
With such a snazzy website and professional press releases, I am totally confident this product not only exists, but will also be available within the "next two years."
Ok, so there are 300 million middle-class Indians. That means there are about 700 million lower-class and poor Indians who will work for pennies on every US dollar Americans will work for. That means "American" goods manufacture will be outsourced to India. Then the only money coming into America is through the corporations who own the means of manufacturing abroad and their mighty investors.
Face it, if you hold a blue-collar manufacturing job in the US, you'd better get some more skills or you're fucked.
I completely agree. The trend toward sheltering our children is causing way more harm then good. Don't believe me? Google search for "boomerang generation." We're creating a generation of kids unable to cope with the realities of life and therefore decided to never grow up/leave the house. Just ask my puritanical 27-year-old sister who has yet to get a full-time job and leave the nest.
I'm not saying smoke crack around your kid and beat him regularly. The key is finding a balance between care and dissappointment. And, Christ, say "No" once in awhile. There'd be a lot fewer problems in the world otherwise.
Considering Google's business model, it seems obvious that they payment system will facilitate AdSense and AdWords payments between Google and advertisers, not person to person. Hell, I've got a liberal arts degree and even I can see that.
This type of commentary is asinine. Who in their right mind expects Google to take on the Chinese government? And in what name? Freedom? These very same people screamed bloody murder when the US entered Iraq under the same cause.
Get over it people. Google is not going to alienate a nation of 1+ billion potential customers in the name of free speech. Just wait until China decides to de-link its currency from the dollar and strikes out on their own. You'll see a hell of a lot of companies (and governments!) going back on their word to please the powerhouse that is China.
Tell me, how much does it cost to get an advertorial on/.? I'm being serious. I have a site I want to promote and this seems like a keen way. $50 is about as much as I can afford, though. Does anyone have a link to the rate card?
I sense a bubble.
SPAMming on /.? I've been away too long.
Does that include the "n"-word? It is South Carolina.
My point is, whom does it have to offend to be profane?

Anyone read the interview? This guy seems pretty whacked out himself.
FTA:
Davison and colleagues are designing endoscopic surgical instruments with SLAM abilities.
Does this sound painful to anyone else?
Am I the only one who thought of "Being John Malkovich" after reading this?
"Low overhead!"
survive the flood of imported goods?
It also helps to read the question properly.
I'm sure there's a link to the actual map in the story somewhere. I think...
Social networking website "skills" an important factor in a child's future success? Walden Pond is looking better every day.
First thing that came to mind...
The lights go out, the blinds close, the displays read, "feel the energy" as a voice repeats the same phrase over a deep bass beat.
You obviously can't teach good taste.

USA: Iped?
France: Ipied
Italia: Ipiede
I should be in marketing.
Hopefully we'll have sufficient liberal backlash

What is the British citizen getting for that expense?
Why, a brand new national ID card, silly. Probably with holograms, too. Everyone loves holograms. Whoopie!
Did anyone else think of "The Hudsucker Proxy" when they read this article?
"What is it? A circle?"
"It's a hula hoop!"
"No one will ever buy that."

I don't ever remember being tested for this parasite. How can they make such a claim?
I'd mod this up if I had the points.
