    So you spend ever more time: getting to the bus/train station, more time waiting for a bus/train and even more time riding on a bus/train as it travels around making all the stops on its route.

    Been there, done that.

    From the time I walk out the front door of my house to the time I walk into the front door at work:
    Driving -- 45 minutes.

    Bus -- 75 minutes

    Train -- 85 minutes

    The ONLY reason companies want to push Mars exploration is a monetary reasons. To mine it and exploit it like we do this one.

    During the "Gold Rush" of the mid 1800s the people who made the most money were not the miners. Most of them went broke and died mining for gold. The big money was made by the people selling equipment and supplies to the miners.

    Mars is no different. A few companies will make a lot of money selling rockets, building materials and supplies. And all the people who die trying to live on Mars (or die just trying to get there) is none of their concern.

    He's a self-righteous douchecanoe - but his attitude doesn't change whether he's correct or not. All the same, I think he's wrong on this one. Just because we don't have the technology *right now* doesn't mean it is completely impossible

    I have to agree with Bill on this one. For once, he's right.

    People have been going to Antarctica for 200 years now and we still aren't able to live there permanently due to the harsh conditions. So, maybe ~500 years from now we'll figure it out, but in the mean time maybe we should focus on other more realistic things.

    The authors of this most recent story were also the author of the original Supermicro story. They also wrote other pieces over the last couple of years were they have made lots of spectacular claims, with little or no evidence, and, there has never been any follow-up on the stories.

    I was on their support forum and couldn't believe the stupidity of the devs there.

    I asked how I can move the browser cache to a different location. Can't do it. Moron developers keep asking why I want to do that.

    Well, in addition to wanting the cache on a RAM disk instead of on my SSD, how about the fact that every browser, INCLUDING FUCKING INTERNET EXPLORER let's you easily move the browser cache to any location you want.

    The *ONLY* browsers that don't let you do that are Brave and Edge.

    'nuff said.

    If "most cars" ran on electric the infrastructure would be such that the majority of homes would have chargers as well, and whatever gas-station equivalent would be a much simpler business to run as you would just be reselling electricity -- not constrained by large fuel tanks and pumps.

    But none of that changes that fact that it takes a long time to charge a battery. Without some enormous improvements in technology -- range and charging time -- a country full of electric cars is going to be a big problem when a significant disaster strikes.

    Exactly the same way that the DMCA works in the U.S. If someone sees something they don't like, they file a complaint claiming "copyright infringement".

    Since investigating the complaint and determining whether or not it really is infringement would require doing actual work, the "infringing material" is immediately taken down without question.

    Variable fonts are an extension to the OpenType specification, which allows a single font file to store a continuous range of design variants.

    Just installed Windows 7 on a computer yesterday. New computer with modern hardware, everything works just fine. Had to manually install a couple of drivers because Windows 7 doesn't *natively* support a couple of newer things, but that is trivial. Windows Update ran and updates everything. And it still gets security updates till 2020.

    I used to always upgrade to the newest and latest as soon as it came out. Windows 8 and Windows 10 cured me of that. Utter garbage. And Microsoft shows no intention of acknowledging their massive fuckup. Instead they keep doubling down on the stupidity and making Windows worse and worse.

    Yes. That's what I would be expecting for a professional working in IT, with IT or using IT as their primary tool.

    Windows 10 was released in July 2015. A professional working in or with IT-related topics that has not adapted to new technology over more than three years AND who doesn't recognize that as a potential problem? They themselves really are what's wrong about it.

    Except, you have deliberately left out one important part.

    There's a reason why, after 3 years, there are still more people using Windows 7 than Windows 10.

    Windows 10 is broken, unusable, shit. Filled with un-needed and un-wanted garbage, even in the "Pro" and "Enterprise" versions.

    Depends what you're doing with it. Joe User, GIMP works just fine and dandy.

    I've used both (Photoshop and GIMP) and GIMP doesn't even come close. Not even for Joe Non-Professional User.

    Use POP/IMAP instead when out and about.

    I've had a GMail account since the old days when you had to have an "invitation" to get one.

    Whether I'm at home or away, I *ALWAYS* use POP/IMAP and a real e-mail client.

    There simply is no reason to use Google's retarded, constantly subject-to-change-on-a-whim, web interface.

    Yes, it does, and it's called a passport. Each passport has a unique "book number". The US also issues "passport cards" to passport holders. This is a federally-issued, unique identification card which is considered valid ID.

    How is this any different from a Social Security card, which is also a federally-issued, unique identification card? How does issuing everyone a passport solve any problem?

    In the case of SCCFD, they had the wrong goddamn plan and/or they failed to understand the terms of the plan. They were (are) public safety plans available from Verizon that exclude throttling. SCCFD did not purchase it.

    That's not true. At least not according to a statement made by Verizon at the time this first hit the news.

    According to Verizon, *ALL* of their plans include throttling once you hit a certain limit.

    Here's what they said in one of their e-mails to the fire department:

    " All unlimited data plans offered by Verizon have some sort of data throttling built-in"
