  1. Oh crap on Dr. Pepper Tries New Astroturf Method · · Score: 1

This is really going to undermine the people that blog about how much Mountain Dew they drink. Now we'll think they were being paid.
Bah. They're not "up all night coding/playing Quake" or whatever. They really do sleep 8 hours a night.

    Damn posers.

  2. Oh blah. on Apple to Launch Music Service? · · Score: 2, Insightful

I get sick of hearing about "oh, no liner notes." Half of the local artists around here never bothered to spend the money on anything more than a 1 page liner note/j-card anyway. They just slapped lame artwork and a band photo on a j-card and called it good.

Somehow, I really don't see the big value..

Also, your "indie store" might not be so "indie" after all... check into it.

I am *very* happy with Vonage. Very very happy. I've never had any call problems at all. the price is excellent. With relatives out of town, I've saved a ton in long distance fees.
Also, I'm not getting hit with a big pile of taxes. There's sales tax, that's IT. My old SBC bill was about 45% in taxes. Now I pay only like $5 more and get *all* of the useful features.

Vonage now supports fax machines as well. Oh, and "Virtual Numbers." I live in the East SF Bay. I have family in Northern CA. Now I can get a number in the 530 area code, and my family can call *me* and not run up long distance charges. I could pick up a Florida NPA/NXX as well, for only $4.99/mo.

Vonage rocks. I pray to god that the Bells don't ever cause their demise.

No, we don't know that. That man has obviously never seen the wiring in my apartment building. I'm lucky if I screw in a light bulb and have it work.

And as for the bill? I scrapped my landline and went with Vonage because I *never* knew what the bill was going to be. The list of 9 different taxes varied every month.

  17. UNACCEPTABLE. on Dealing with Employers Who Perform Credit Checks? · · Score: 1

I am getting SICK of having my CREDIT REPORT used for a character profile.
Have bad credit? Can't rent an apartment. Rental history and job becomes totally irrelevant at that point, unfortunately. Yes, I tried the "I'll give you 3x the deposit" bit, but when you're in a tight rental market, all you hear is "No, I'm sorry." and they move on to the next applicant. Barganing with a landlord doesn't happen in the Silicon Valley anymore. If you do get a place, it's probably in a complex that isn't nearly as nice as you wanted - or could afford.

How about insurance? Why does an *auto insurance company* need to check my credit report? There is no reason. So, I couldn't pay some bills that I racked up with I was 19yrs old, that's supposed to mean that I'm a crappy driver now, 7 years later? No, I don't think so. My credit report has absolutely nothing to do with my driving history and the two should never be put together.

I think that if a utility company can report non-payment to your credit agency, it should also be required to post the positive payments as well. It's bullshit that it's difficult to get positive references reported but it's a drop of a hat to get negative references reported.
Oh, and negative references (that i paid off already) remaining on the report for 7 years? Absurd. They should be removed in no longer than 3 years. I paid the bills, but they were reported anyway. They should not be able to screw me for 7 years over a late phone bill.

I totally disagree with an employer "judging character" by using your credit report. Aren't these the same jobs that say it's against company policy to discuss pay rates with other employees? You can't say how much you make, but the Boss can know that you had a car repossessed 5 years before?
Sorry, pal. I don't think so.

An office I rented in downtown Sacramento had an alarm system that would trip off sometimes - the Sacramento Police Department would come out to investigate, would find nothing (because it was a false alarm) and would promptly send a bill for the time it took to respond to the false alarm.
Fortunately, I wasn't required to pay them because the alarm was managed by the building owner, so I passed the bill along to them.

So, yes, the police department really *does* send out bills. :-)
