    They now include Canada in the free calling area. No more international fees to call Vancouver. Yay! Oh, and the "virtual number" thing is cool. For an additional $4.99/mo, I can get a (916)xxx-xxxx phone number that routes to my home phone.

    Pretty cool setup.

    Why? Check THIS crap out. Everything else they sell is basically crap (used hardware as new, etc..) and their ISP is a complete patch job.

    I did the exact same thing. Wasn't 8.0 the one that shipped with the buggy kernel? YaST's online update module just quits. No errors, nothing logged, just *piff!*
    Oh, and the http server list in the online update module seems to contain servers that don't have the correct files or are generally flaky.

    I switched to Gentoo as well and am happy to be out of RPM hell.

    I really couldn't agree with you more. I don't know.. *I* never gave Experian/etc ANY right to my financial information. Why should they have it? Why can't I say "remove any information you have regarding my SSN xxx-xxx-xxxx, now!" and have them do it?
    Annoying.

    Office Depot/OfficeMax/Staples are the *last* place I'd ever buy software.

    well, one exception: Staples has no concept of "release date" so some of us folks got Mac OS X 10.0 a few days before the actual street date. That was cool.

    Otherwise, I go there for normal office supplies and I go to Fry's (or amazon.com) for software.

    So, they simply create more Hotmail accounts and send out more spam.

    Besides, I've never actually had spam *from* Hotmail - it's usually going *to* my Hotmail account or spam coming with forget Hotmail headers.

    I seriously doubt this is going to do very much to curb spam.

    this "we're going to annoy the hell out of you" method of law enforcement is rather entertaining... imagine the fun someone could have by posting bills with the telephone number of your competition!

    Proving that you did *not* post bills with your phone number could prove difficult but by that time, you've already racked up 543,766,246,742 voicemails and text messages.

    Do they have free incoming text messages in China? I certainly hope so.. in addition to a fine, you'd have a whopping phone bill.

    Hrm. maybe Verizon is in on this!

    Do not tolerate employees who behave unprofessionally. Problem-solve or fire them.

    I guess that would depend on your version of "professional." At the sweat shop I work in, simply questioning management or asking for a schedule change (because you commute using public transit) is "unprofessional" to them.

    PATRIOT act? It's now trivial for law enforcement agencies to get wiretaps.
    John Ashcroft's ideals? Look at what's happened to Muslims all over the US after Sept 11th.
    And you're right, you don't have the Mafia.. just the RIAA/MPAA, and if some senator in Texas has his way, you'll have the government hauling you into prison.

    Oh, and let's not forget the FBI in Ohio going after people that uncapped their cable modems. And reviewing recent library book checkouts. And forcefully detaining people that mentioned they disagreed with Bush on their weblogs.

    yes, stuff like that has happened. I'd call that a pretty crazy violation of civil rights.

    nobody can get to them anyway, they're too busy sucking bandwidth with Flash ads saying "WAR!" and streaming RealMedia. Heh.

    At least after Sept 11, news agencies went to static HTML versions of their news sites.

    The less fluff, the better. We just want the friggin news.

    Good for him. Maybe now after he "creates Peace in the Middle East" he can point his attention to creating an educated, peaceful America. Maybe then he can work on resolving our failing economy, unemployment, lack of health care, poor education system, and ever decreasing number of civil rights.

    Debian is one. Gentoo is another. YDL is the Red Hat-ish 3rd (and there are others)

    It's nice to have a choice. Use whatever works well for you. Hell, use them all and play around with them. You can get a used G3/233 from ebay for less than $150 now.

    That doesn't change the fact that you're still getting spammed!!! So what if you know who did it? Great, you won't do business with them again because they sold your address.

    Your still getting spammed because in most places, it's perfectly legal for them to do so. Your bandwidth is still absorbing spam. Your mail server still deals with the spam/bounces.

    Just making a cute address doesn't solve the problem.

    Had my parents beaten me to a bloody pulp, I might consider being their tech support monkey something that "evens out the grand scheme of things."

    God, there is no way that taking care of me for 15 years is anywhere equal to the tech support nightmare that is my grandmother.
    My mom has a computer science degree, but grandma calls me instead. Ugh.

    Do what I do. I buy the "Personal" version, so SuSE gets a little $ back, and I install everything else that I need from either a)the source or b)SuSE Pro RPMs from ftp.suse.com.

    I've been using SuSE Pro releases but 8.1 really started to annoy me by insisting that I install a bunch of stuff I didn't want or risk "system inconsistancies." Damn it, if I wanted KDE w/o CUPS, let me. Geez!

    However, I've taken a liking to Gentoo these days.

    Well, I *did* - until SCO bought them and they began running around like a flock of headless chickens. Generally, poultry are amusing, but not when they're headless software chickens.
    Caldera's eDesktop fell by the wayside, updates were few & far between.. blah.
    I moved everything over to SuSE, but I wonder if *that* was a good decision. Isn't SCO part of this UnitedLinux thing along with SuSE/etc?

    Maybe I'll look at Debian or Gentoo. Hrm.
