I'm gonna go out on a limb: I think the theme song is the best theme song ever written for any series. It captures the mood of the series perfectly. The first time I heard it I didn't like it, but then as I watched the opening sequence again I realized what they were trying to do and how well the song fit.

All good art is controversial. ;)

However, I use it less and less. My parents and brothers have DSL. The last hotel I stayed at (in rural Georgia, no less) had free wi-fi access.

Maybe in another year, I'll be able to save that $40.

  15. Re:Its not hard to understand why we like cars. on Virginia MagLev Project Back on Track · · Score: 1

Here's my take: Europe has far better rail transportation systems in place than the US. While many major US cities have some sort of mass transit (rail, or even bus), those systems aren't very convenient, and using a car is still too convenient in the US.

For example, I live about 3 blocks from a Metro station in the Washington, DC area. I love trains and subway systems, so you'd think I'd ride it frequently, right? Nah, I almost never use it. Here's why:

    1. To get to work, It's over an hour by Metro, versus a 25-30 minute drive. Even on days when there's a bad accident that slows me down, it still takes only up to an hour. And, there are several times each month where I have to go to a different building that's about 10 miles from where I usually work. Although there's a shuttle service provided by my employer, it's unreliable--it has left me sitting a couple times--and the times it runs are pretty bad ("Let's see - I can arrive 45 minutes early for this meeting or 20 minutes late..."). (Also, I have to drive to southern Maryland about once a month after work, so I'd need a car those days regardless. I could take a bus TO southern Maryland, but getting home that evening would not be possible.)

    2. For fun? I took Metro to a concert last fall. Unfortunately, I had to leave before the band finished, missing at least two songs. Why? Because I had to get back to Metro so could catch the last train home for the night. Otherwise, I would've been stranded. That's the last time I'll take Metro to a concert like that.

    3. I travel to areas in the DC metro that don't have Metro service, such as southern Maryland, at times when service is nonexistant, such as Sunday night. So, I would need a car anyway.

    4. I like driving. DC does everything it can to remove the fun of driving, but I still manage to enjoy it.

  18. Re:My shuffle world random rocks on The Joy of Random Shuffle · · Score: 5, Informative

It could happen the first time you use it.

If you have 9 songs, then there's 9! (362,880) possible permutations, I think. (I'm a statistician, but it's my day off, so I get to be lazy and not think too hard about this.)

So, the probability of getting the exact order of the album would be 1/362880, which is about 0.0000028. Okay, it's pretty unlikely, but it could happen, especially if you listen to that album a lot. Another way to think about it: every time you play the ablum on shuffle, the chosen play order you hear only had a probability of 0.0000028 of being chosen.

Assumption: shuffle w/o replacement. If you have shuffle with replacement (as one of my CD players does), it's even less likely.

I love how everyone automatically assumes everything on TV is garbage. Like any other art form, there's good stuff and bad. Example: I read Tom Clancy and John Grisham novels, but I know they aren't going to go down in history as timeless classics in the way that, say, Shakespeare's plays did. But, oh no, I'm reading and therefore it must be better than watching TV.

Almost all truck accidents are actually the result of cars, pickups, or SUVs doing something stupid, not the truck itself. The truck just makes it a lot worse (and puts it on the news).

My guess is that you did something to that flatbed driver, possibly cut in front of him or something. He definitely shouldn't have tailgated you or confronted you, of course, but I'm pretty certain you did something to set him off.

I don't know what country you're in, but in the US, truckers have to get a CDL, the Commercial Driver's Licence. Any fool can get a license to drive an auto, even towing a trailer, but you have to know what you're doing to get a CDL. Sure, there are bad/stupid truck drivers out there, but between the CDL and the sheer amount of experience they have driving (500 miles/day adds up very quickly), the rate of bad truck drivers is FAR lower than the rate of bad automobile drivers. I'd much rather deal with trucks than other "4-wheelers".
