  1. That doesn't sound useful on Device Protects Day Traders From Emotional Trading · · Score: 5, Insightful

I'm a trader by profession (although not a day trader) and making emotional decisions is about the worst thing you can do. The only worse thing is NOT making a call because you happen to be excited.

It's a learned behaviour, but a trader needs to be able to abstract away from the trade. You almost need to pretend that somebody else is doing the trade and you're just watching. I think any trader who stays in the job learns this skill eventually. The first time I traded a few million dollars of risk, I was down to few last red cells in my adrenaline stream. If I kept going that way, I'd be either an unemployed or an alcoholic (or most likely both). Instead I learned not to take it too personally. Now a large trade barely increases my pulse.

I don't think a device can replace this behaviour. In a fast market my heart may be way up due to working on several things at once and trying to keep up with the information. I still need to make trades, I just need to stay rational. A glorified heart rate monitor won't help with this.

As for the rest - I'd be surprised if they would give fansubbers permission to distribute they materials if asked for one. The reason fansubbing community can get away with this is because Japanese authors find it too costly and difficult to keep fansubbers from distributing their works.

Actually the shows/books aren't free to trade to begin with. There are international agreements on intellectual property and stealing Japanese works is just as wrong as stealing American. The only legeal difference is that US licensees may be better positioned to enforce the agreement.
From the moral standpoint, some believe that it's ok to distribute a fansubbed work until it's licensed in US, since this is the only way for people to access it (it isn't true - you can buy Japanese DVD/VHS and find scripts online for most of them). Once the shopw is licensed, the moral reationale is gone and distribution of fansubs becomes you plain vanialla piracy.

  6. Scanlatons vs. translations on Scanlation: Distributed Manga · · Score: 3, Insightful

This will likely go against the slashdot majority dogma, but scanlations have all the copyright issues inherent in fansubs. After all, they do disribute copyrighted work. There are on the other hand comminities that translate manga and release translations of it; i.e. a traslated script without actual manga images.
You can buy japanese manga and with translations you can read it. Yes it's a little less convenient, but at least authors get paid for their work.

Half.com has an easy way to report them - unfortunately, ever since eBay bought half, reports fall on deaf ears. According to eBay only a license holder for the title can report copyright violation. In order to do it, a studio must be registered under the eBay's VERO program. Aparently the process is complex enough that most studios who license anime in US don't bother to go through it.

As a result eBay and half are chockful of bootlegs; and it's just the way they like it - after all, they make their fee regardless of legality of a sale.

    Let me try :-)

Just because Apple got rid of debt doesn't mean that Jobs and the gang own all company assets. Everything (including those 4.8BB in cash) is owned by Apple shareholders (people who own Apple stock). Shareholders in turn want to make money - be that in the form of dividends or in the form of stock appreciation.

Shareholders take more risk than bondholders do, since there is no promised payoff. If Apple fares poorly, shareholders lose their investment without any legal recourse. Since shareholders take more risk, they want to earn more than bondholders on their investments. Meaning that they expect Apple to make more money than bondholders did.

Since all of Apples capital now comes from equity financing (stock), they have to make enough profit to meet shareholders expectations.

The good news for Apple is that there's no rigid schedule of payments they have to meet (like they do with debt). The bad news is that they have to earn more or shareholders would get upset.

  15. Re:is that a good thing? on Apple Now Debt Free, Says Internal Memo · · Score: 1

Being debt free isn't necessarily good. A public company without debt is financed entirely by equity, which is more expensive than debt. Shareholders generally expect higher return on their investment than bondholders.
With higher cost of capital Apple will have to make sure that their projects generate higher return on money they invest into them. As a result Apple may have to forego some projects, which they would've chosen to pursue have they had lower cost of capital.

Dividend policy should really depend on whether a company can make efficient use of funds or better off giving it back to shareholders. In that case investor gets the return through stock appreciation rather than dividend payments. If you're looking for more information on this.
