You're missing the point. I *know* the speed is aggregate somewhere in the headend. The point is that people on cable are bitching about the speed of their connections and it's because the bandwidth distribution isn't controlled or segmented. Actually from what I know about Cox's network, they have X amount of bandwidth per node and most nodes support about 1k users. So all it takes is one or two dorks in your neighborhood on your node to suck up most of the bandwidth because these nodes are rarely maxed out. I think they aim for ~60% capacity at any given time and are supposed to split the node if it gets higher. This is to prevent the very problem they're faced with now.

The dilemma they're faced with, as I understand it, isn't the total bandwidth usage per month. They're having trouble with individuals on each node flooding the node with traffic through (what some might call) excessive leeching. It could be that they didn't expect people to actually take advantage of the bandwidth they have on tap..but that's just bad planning. We all know big corps never make planning mistakes don't we? ;P

  3. Re:just a ploy on Comcast May Raise Prices On "Internet Hogs" · · Score: 2

Get dsl and quit whining. When you get dsl you get your chunk of bandwidth and no more, which is actually a better plan if you see it from the ISP's side. You can still leech all you want but you're not killing other user's bandwidth. You can get cut-rate, crap bandwidth connection packages or full-blown speed (price commensurate of course). The concept of above-t1 speeds for $50 a month or less is a fallacy and no companies could afford it unless everyone had their service. They're just now starting to feel the pain of professional leeches and this is the first volley in what is sure to become a total war on bandwidth hogs.

In the end it's lack of planning and prediction on the ISP's part that's causing this. Blame your local leecher second and your ISP first. If the leecher couldn't pull down mad bandwidth all the time, he wouldn't leech all the time. I say implement a 200K cap on everyone's downstream at the headend.

The funny thing about all this is to think that with all this computerization, video, etc., there's still not enough bandwidth for decent video over the net. People are *still* listening to 'radio' after all this time. Internet radio is a precious resource and I doubt better video will change that. It'll be nice if/when XM satellite radio receivers start shipping on pcmcia cards.

If things keep going the way they are now, you'll only get crap like Dark Angel and Everybody Loves Raymond in higher definition. Who gives a shit? Get good programming first that drives the demand for HDTV.

While the radio to tv transition was probably much more dramatic, it was also a paradigm shift. You went from only hearing to hearing and seeing. Kinda like the difference between reading the book and watching the movie (and you know which is better right?). The change between TV and HDTV will be so miniscule to the average joe it'll just perpetuate the public and broadcaster's attitude of 'why do we need this?'. Admittedly, watching dvd's on a widescreen hdtv is sweet, and has tons of decent content available, but broadcast tv always has and always will suck ass. It's up to cable or directv to rescue us.

The world market share from the Xbox's perspective is puny compared to the ps2. The ps2 has more and better developer support. The ps2 has all the top games (grand theft auto 3, gran turismo 3 just to name two). The ps2 doesn't require a costly addon to allow you to play dvds; it can do this right out of the box.

Why not shove it up a wannabe blackboy gangbanger's ass? Or a chinese guy's ass? Why does it have to be a white person? I follow your argument but wonder why you have to discriminate when it comes to bad rap (yes there IS good rap but you may never hear it). Bad rap is played by black folks as much as white. Same set of stereotypes used in the music (that of the artist being a pimp on top of the world or whatever) and of women being nothing more than sex objects. But it sells, there's no denying that. I attribute that to the LCD theory, if you cater to the lowest common denominator (wannabe gangstas of any color) you'll hit your mark and make money.

    Here's your requested correction.

Schroedinger's cat test is a little more sadistic than that.

You have a box you can't see into. Inside the box you place a vial of deadly poison that will produce instant death if it's broken. Close to the vial you position a hammer that's cocked. It can go off and break the vial at any time.

After you stick the cat in the box, you close it up. What follows is an incredibly simplified base for Quantum physics.

At any time, the hammer is both cocked and uncocked, the vial both broken and unbroken, the cat both alive and dead. None of the objects are in a definite state until you take a measurement, in which case you determine all three.

The nature of light is similar. It is both a particle and a wave, depending on how you measure it. In most experiments, researchers focus upon either light's particle aspects (by counting photons, for instance) or wave aspects (by measuring an interference between electromagnetic fields, to cite a simple example). Hence the dual nature of light and the relation to Schroedinger's cat experiment.
