    Dear Backdoor,

I'm sorry I haven't written in so long, but you know how busy things get. Maybe it's time for us to move on. I've found this great credit card database that uses default passwords. What can I say, it has so much more to offer.

  4. Re:Really? on Xbox Coming to Arcades · · Score: 1, Insightful

I picked up an Xbox when they first came out and it crashed within 10 minutes of starting it up. The self-diagnostic ran, and gave me an error code and the number for XBox support. So I called it, even though I knew I could take the box back to EB immediately. The service rep took my code, said I had a faulty mainboard and that they would be happy to ship me a new Xbox immediately if I so desired. Since it was faster to just drive the 10 minutes back to EB and get the replacement I declined. But I can't fault MS for customer service. (As far as they knew I was just another consumer, no developer strings were pulled.)

With my RCA D52130, when the green tube went in it in January it was less than a year old with enough warranties on it to protect it for 5 years. It still took RCA over a month just to come back and say "Sorry, it will take 5 months for that part to come in." (Many phone calls, and some swearing later the retailer gave me a full store credit so I don't have to buy another RCA product. Yay)

The Xbox is a great console, and so are the PS2 and Gamecube. YMMV but I've had all three and my issues have been more with finding titles that I want to fill my library with, rather than the hardware.

As long as the companies are willing to support their hardware with good warranties and customer service, and release great titles it all comes down to personal preference.

So a pox on those "Wait till you get a BSOD on your Xbox" trolls. :)

Well, the tagline for Slashdot is "News for Nerds. Stuff that Matters."

While closely situated there doesn't appear to be an AND, OR, XOR or NOT in there. So I think they could be two distinct statements.

This one definitely falls under News for Nerds. Not sure about the 'Stuff that matters' though. :)

In a way though, something like this *is* news because it gives us a sense of nostalgia -- roots that nerds all over the world cling to dearly. "This is the game that made me want to write my own code!" etc. etc.

Jocks have their first touchdown, headbangers their first Maiden or Priest concert, and geeks have a game/simulation/porn movie that became a life changing experience.

Good point though. No flames directed your way in this.

I used the best anti-fraud option available to credit card users out there. I just kept the damn thing maxed out. If someone stole the number they'd just have to make a payment on it first. :) Of course the second they'd do such a silly thing I'd change my billing address to someplace else where I could still be reached and close the account. :) Not that a thief would actually pay into a card.

The address change is handy though, if you're closing off a card and don't want any charges to follow you. Normally, if you get a new card and close off the old one the credit card company can forward new charges to the old card to your new card. It sucks, but I found out when trying to cancel a card in order to stop Sympatico for repeat fraudulent billings. As long as they provided valid information about the account, Visa said that it was considered to be pre-authorized payments. So I tested another monthly payment by changing my billing address and postal code, and lo and behold, next month that transaction didn't go through because the site info no longer matched Visa's information on me in the database. (Note, if you're going to test this with a company that legitimately bills you, do it with a company that gives you a grace period to fix your billing info or it could reflect badly on you)
