  7. XulRunner on The Future of Firefox · · Score: 2, Interesting

XulRunner is what I've been waiting for! We've got our fully functional CRM app, but having people download Firefox and run it through that just doesn't look as professional as it could.

Of course, firefox --chrome http://blahblahblah.../ works, but is still more difficult, and people begin to wonder where this Firefox thing came from. Yeah, spreading the browser is a great cause and good crusade, BUT, business is business. In fact, when people call tech support complaining IE won't work(why are they calling us? No idea, we're just too nice sometimes), we tell them to install FF, and they're good to go.

Hopefully with the Gecko Runtime Enviroment(GRE) coming along, it will make smaller downloads for the other apps once you've got one installed. (Installed FF, great, Tbird and Xulrunner are miniscule downloads). Perhaps not, but maybe...

  8. The only problem with Broadband being the top goal on FCC Chair Says Broadband Top Goal · · Score: 1

Is that the FCC hates that you can have one phone line and a data connection supporting up to multiple phone lines, all without expensive drop-in line charges/etc. I think we should focus on getting Fiber, DSL, and Cable out to the masses and giving them VoIP.

Telecom is a changing industry, that's for sure. The players will stay the same, but will shrink and move into the background. (Yeah, I know they can make the quality bad, but with many VoIP providers going over dark fiber and becoming CLECs, many are learning to bypass the big bell's, but the big bell's are gonna stay around for awhile, someone'll have to repair those lines).

It's like saying that if your computer doesn't boot up all the way, you throw it out instead of fixing it. It takes time to get things working properly.

It's like Solar, efficiency keeps getting better and better, prices keep getting lower and lower. Is it worth it? Not yet. In the future? Possibly. Solar won't produce a whole lot of energy, but with the lowered energy needs from those energy saving lights and other sustainable housing features(tubular skylights for example), it may very well be a possibility.

So it doesn't do good right away is no reason to dismiss it outright.

  11. It isn't ready on Asa Dotzler on Why Linux Isn't Ready for the Desktop · · Score: 1

To say Linux isn't ready for the desktop is correct. To say Windows is ready for the desktop isn't correct.

BTW, Windows is tolerable on the Workstation(Bigger enviroment, admin necessary), but then, you can say the same for Linux on the Workstation as well!

Sure, there'll always be call for professionals, but it's getting to where you can have just about anyone with a 45-minute course and a big-megapixel camera can do some pretty good shots.

My favorite is my cheap kodak digital can take pictures from far away, with its little bit of zoom, and I can get home, zoom in on the picture in photoshop(reduces maximize size of final print though, not that I really print much) and it looks like I either had a very professional camera with a huge zoom, or I was much closer when I took my picture, even if that isn't a possibility.
