I guess more than half of slashdot doesn't realize the rivalry between princeton and yale. My sister graduated from princeton and they teach you to hate hate hate yale and harvard. At their triangle shows (a really funny play that the theater group puts on), if they say Yale at any time during their show, everyone in the theater must immediately say SUCKS. There is something similar for harvard, but I haven't been to a show in so long so I forgot). From the outside it seems lame, but it sure is funny. Apparently the Princeton-Yale rivalry started in 1868 after a baseball game, but I can't find anything else about it

  5. This is a great book on I'm Just Here for the Food · · Score: 0, Informative

This is a book about cooking techniques, rather than recipies. It's organized by cooking method, rather than ingredients like most other cookbooks. There are a lot of cookbooks out there full of nothing but recipies, but many of them don't say anything about the different methods to prepare food. AB also goes into some of the how's and why's of the different preparation methods. afraid to broil? never poached anything? roasts turn out like lumps of coal? deep fried stuff ends up grease laden? You'll pick up a lot of good tips out of this book. There are a few simple recipies in with each section that you can use to test the waters and practice with.

If you like to cook and want to expand your repetoire of cooking techniques, this is a good one to add to the shelf.

A similiar program (quite functional too) exists for windows. OtsJuke lets you create a playlist, mix songs, and has a virtual turntable which lets you scratch music (mp3s, wav, and digital audio extraction). While it isn't hardware based, its pretty nifty for a cheap software based solution.

  15. My $0.02 on Translucent Databases · · Score: 2, Interesting

This book contains an innovative and viable approach to securing databases, and one that I've not encountered anywhere else. In a nutshell the author provides techniques, based on standard SQL and Java, for securing sensitive data without restricting general access of less sensitive data to authorized users. The core of this approach is based on encryption and one-way functions, including PKI and secure hashing, and accepted authentication techniques such as digital signatures.

What makes this book unique is that while it's based on solid theoretical ground, the material is practical. As the techniques are discussed they are illustrated by 15 different scenarios, all of which contain problems faced by e-commerce and other high security environments, and code examples that show how to solve the problems. I like the way the author shows how to implement his solutions in common database environments (PostgreSQL, MySQL and Oracle - the approach should also work in the MS SQL Server environment). As I read this book I saw interesting possibilities for implementing role-based access controls and securing against SQL-based statistical attacks using the author's approach.

This book is essential reading for DBAs and system architects and IT security professionals. This book shows the DBA how to secure his or her database, and the system architects and security professionals what is possible using SQL and Java. The book also has an associated web site which is supposed to have soft copies of all of the source code contained in the book. As of 6/25/02 the link to the source code is on the site, but the code itself is not yet available. When it is the value of this book will increase even more because of the time it will save by not having to manually create the code from scratch.

If you are new to the cryptographic techniques introduced in this book I recommend "Cryptography Decrypted" by H. X. Mel and Doris M. Baker, which is one of the best introductions to this complex subject. I also recommend reading "Secrets and Lies: Digital Security in a Networked World" by Bruce Schneier, which covers the technical, organizational and social aspects of security and gives a clear description of the technical underpinnings discussed in this book.

This work is challenging on many fronts, not the least of which is that there are many long-winded and dry descriptive passages that span many pages. But it is a history!

Most of the challenge comes in the dramatic paradigm this work uses as a premise. I enjoyed the way the book challenged me to view the world from the Eastern philosophies, and the premise to continue to bring back the same characters in each era was truly enjoyable.

If you enjoy history, philosophy or the work of KSR, it's worth the read.
