While Lynn did good work discovering this flaw I don't agree with his actions in the slightest. Cisco made the fix and released a patch in a timely fashion. Who is he to dictate how Cisco goes about announcing it? Is he the boss of Cisco because he found a flaw?

Granted, it would be advised to mark the patch as critical and give it some press. But is that required?

Personally, Lynn's the ultimate loser here. He stands to watch his career go straight down the shitter and for what? Some ego-centric power play? I don't think any corporation will want to bring him in at the risk of him pulling some stunt like this on them if he gets his nose bent out of joint.

And as to the FBI, they're just doing their job -- they got a complaint so they flat foot it a bit and check it out. I'm sure they'll bug out of it soon enough.

And while Cisco and ISS maybe playing hardball, I can understand why. The dude started a fire and they damn well sure want to stomp it out.

And it seems that both ISS and Cisco were willing to allow him to make this public disclosure -- they just wanted some PR guys their to do damage control and make sure their side was accurately reflected. But for whatever reason, Lynn would have none of that -- so he quit his job and gave them all a big F-U.

Personally, this guy sounds like a complete ass-hat and I question his real intentions here. There are many alternative ways he could have raised the issues he wanted to bring to bear.
Showing up at a black hat conference and giving a how to on this exploit was certainly never going to do anything more than harm Cisco.

What I want to know, is if Lynn really did want to help out, why he couldn't have set up a blog that merely discussed the abstract points of the security update and explain why the patch was critical and then post to slashdot or other IT news site to generate the publicity?

If he'd simply cast his ego aside and thought things through a bit better, and worked with all parties involved he'd probably still have a job and the message would have gone out in a far more positive manner.

Considering this guy's worked on the top grossing scifi trilogies of the last few years, he must have some potential. And the bros W might have realized that while they have some great concepts, they aren't the greatest at directing.

However, I suspect that any paralels they make to the current state of affairs will go just as unnoticed as the paralels they made in the Star Wars Prequels.

    And I quote the article:
"Fold n' Drop is a new interaction technique for seamlessly dragging and dropping between overlapping windows."

How about dropping the word "new" and replacing it with "proposed" and appending "for Windows" after the word technique?

    And to quote again:
" Although it is still a research prototype, having it integrated into most popular window managers is technically conceivable."

So from this statement, it's a research prototype and is soooo very cutting edge that it's only concievable, not completely fucking do-able -- not to mention has already been done.

And no -- I'm not an "Apple fanboy", I stopped using Macs after the Pentium+Win95 hit. In the mid through the late 90's, Windows worked just fine for me. After OS X came out, I switched back to the Mac -- no more need for a dual-boot Win2K+Linux pain in the ass.

I still currently run Linux servers and have run some BSD variants, own a Octane with Irix and run Virtual PC for Win XP Pro inside OS X. After the crap-flood of spyware, malware, viruses and script-kiddie exploits for Windows became so prevailing, Virtual PC is the only way I'll ever run Windows again.

Step three: Wait half a second for window "B" become the modal window and release.
    Step four: ???
    Step five: PROFIT!!!!

Perhaps next time you get some wild idea about a revolution in user interaction, you head on over to the Apple store first.

If you look at the pics which illustrate this ground breaking idea -- it does what OS X already does, except OS X doesn't bother with "folding" or "bending" the window, it's just makes it modal (brings it to front) to let you know it's ready to recieve your interaction. Combined with a Apple+`, you can cycle through a large amount of windows dragging and dropping between them. The "folding" effect looks like nothing more than a cheap gimmick that would only chew up cpu/gpu cycles. Sorta like OS X's "genie effect" for window minimizing -- which is always the first thing I disable on a new Mac.

While the UI skin look nicer than XP IMHO, looking at the dialogues and options/settings ... it's the same as XP ... just a few more items thrown in as far as permissions and security. So what exactly has Microsoft been up to for the last few years? This is the mind blowing, paradigm smashing rewrite? This is innovation?

What really gets me is the same old tired icons and maze-like system of hierchy-tree gui navigation to be found in all the system level dialogues. That really grabbed me... it seriously gave me the impression that this Longhorn thing was nothing more than a candy shell slapped on top of the same shit MS has been selling for years.

I think it's very telling how seamless the user experience will be when the microsoft.com address in pic #2 is returning a server not found error... but let's pretend that the computer was unplugged from the net and the user typed in the redirect parameters in the url by hand.

So I'm left scratching my head... if this was indeed a complete rewrite from the bottom up as MS promised, then why the complete similarity to XP/2000/98/95???? Perhaps all their energy and focus was on real security considerations? Maybe that explains all the jettisoned features... Or maybe when they meant rewrite, they really meant pushing some code under the mat, swapping some API's out and splashing on a quick paint job oer the whole shebang to make the old look new again?

Of course, Longhorn is just XP with a new UI and added security with tighter .Net integration. What startles me is that it's taken years to get this far ... that does not bode well at all.
