Yes, they are. That's the first rule of Trolling. The point isn't to make you laugh, it's to make you complain, so they can laugh at you. I think they're doing a fine job.

  4. The worst part about this story on Stopping Light · · Score: 4, Insightful

is not that it's a year old Slashdot repeat; we're used to that. The problem is that the whole "stopping light" headline that all the mainstream journalists (who should know better) carry on it is baloney.

If a photon (light) hits an atom (matter), causing it's electrons to move to a more excited energy level, I defy you to "show me the light". You can't. You can show me a really excited electron, and if you're really clever like these folks at Harvard you can even get that atom to release the exact same light with the exact same waveform, but you haven't stopped light.

It's annoying. How hard is it to say you've "trapped" light?

i don't think so. that's actually a shame. this page delves into it from a high level but doesn't hit the technical details. especially since they keep changing it.

    interesting details:

there are places where no one can attack anyone (LPK), places where you can kill but not loot (NPK), and places where you can kill and loot items (CPK). walking into a CPK area always requires confirmation. additionally, players can set a "DUEL" flag which allows them to engage other players in NPK anywhere on the map, even in town, if both players have the flag set. In addition, killing another player in NPK gives you a certain amount of time during which anyone can attack you (and TRACK you) in NPK. This is called "blood time". you accrue almost none for killing someone stronger then you, and exponentially more for killing someone weaker than you. a level 124 player killing a level 10 player would spend the rest of the day with "blood on their hands".

also read about this, a portion of the game which is dynamically re-located and re-mapped continuously at runtime.

All the problems of grief players, player killing, user grouping, experience sharing, and dynamic landscape generation were solved in text based MUDS like this one years ago. Watching the graphical corporate players re-learn these painful lessons (with the added humor factor of corporate arrogance, pride, and a PR department) has had all the humor value of watching a blind baby learn to walk.

The interesting battle would be carried out not in the code but in the EULA. Sure, the SpyWare is allowing the Spy to commit a crime by installing it on someone else's hardware. The Spy is guilty of the crime, but is the SpyWare guilty of the crime? That would depend on how much warning text they have placed in their EULA about the intended use of the product. I'm not qualified to evaluate legal agreements, so I'll leave it at that.
