i first pirated the game, because i refuse to buy a pig in a poke. easily cracked and played, it felt like the old days. kinda. so i bought it.
at first starting the game would give me a bluescreen and also a nice reboot of my pc. after hours of reading the ubisoft forums i decided to look for driver upgrades. maybe something would help, and really, upgrading my via chipset drivers, resolved the reboot issue. the only problem now was, that i couldn't get into the game, because that crazy securom refused to detect my original dvd. i've yet to find a non-crack solution to play a game i bought a month ago. now who's willing to put up with that shit more often than once?
and besides: pirating games was making games popular really (as pirating windows, made microsoft popular). if i hadn't pirated (and thus played) games back when i was to young to afford them, i wouldn't have bought those 30 titles now residing on my shelf.
it's all but whining, that tells a tale of a healthy industry worth billions. i could go on, but i think you all know, what i'm talking about.
and better. i stopped using cedega, which now comes with an all ugly point2play interface. no cli any more, at least not easily. wine (with patches) runs world of warcraft on my laptop (cedega doesnt) and warcraft 3 (better than cedega).
now that was fast. i thought debian would need another 10 years to hop on that wagon... well at least on the rails, if they are not withered away already. i mean wtf is wrong with debian and those friggin sysadmins using it? on my university, they are using debian for years. i don't mind if i have to use firefox 1.0.8 instead of 1.5, but 1.0.4? eclipse 2.x? heck i'm trying to get some WORK done there too from time to time. for me, one of the strengths of open source is it's rapid development and even though my love for the bleeding edge caused me some serious cuts, there's a always a golden cut, which should make it on the work horses of the working men's desk, but try to argue against security with a sysadmin.
well. i for one don't think that everyone is just lazy. life is just becomeing exceedingly complicated and not everyone can cope with that. i'm not sure lazy people are quite happy with their life, maybe their are missing perspective and just don't know what to do. i know from personal experience, that even the laziest of people are getting quite depressed having nothing to do for a while and no place in the society around them. it's quite hard to watch, because it's not easy to actually give someone perspective.
concerining the sex: i think, it's just a old nerd-thing, but even nerd needs to be redefined today. so i guess that clichee needs a little overhaul too.
at freshmeat you can set your own default font and size (without the need of overriding all fonts by default). that's an interesting option, because at the current state, the main text font of the winner, is not antialiased on my screen, while the current slashdot font is fine. i think on freshmeat you can even set your own css to display the pages. that would be really nice (and probably even more geeky). i'm also sick (even though pretty used to) that slashdot green. it's old, it's stall, it's boring.
i still like the design of the winner better, because it's more stylish round, even though i'm not entirely sure, if that doesn't take up too much space and distracts from the text. beatuy is in the eye of the beholder, while readabilty is pretty much something you can control (O_o).
alright, you little troll. actually i got my observerations from a different point of view, but i'll tell you this. i'm studying computer science on an austrian university. you obviously didn't get my point and i won't repeat myself. i'm not sure, what kind of statement you are making either, but the "hey i'm cool and you suck" standard assumption. so why don't you just try to get laid, mkay?
i think in lower grades you are more receptive to new things and you still learn in a "playful" way. this scheme rapidly decreases in the latter years and you are just stuffed full with information, you should keep in your brain without puking. not only in schools. life is getting quite complex and i think the brain is starting reflect that more and more. it's not developing as fast, as our surrounding, since artificial evolution is a lot faster now than our own, this will be getting more of a problem in a few years, when most of us will be some mindless zombies due to synaptic overload.
microsoft won the race because their products were incredibly well pirated. the gaming industry is, where it is now, because of pirates! heck what would security software companies complain if there were no pirates? no copy protection O_o necessary (go paradox interactive go!)? a whole industry looses billions? where would major hardware vendors be without piracy? who needs tons of tons of cdrws, dvdrs, hdds? right, the guys who got so much stuff (they can't even consume), that they need to store it somewhere. this goes on... the damn industry not only created and nurished pirates for years, they are dependend on them! but if i could sue my customers for a lot of money i wouldn't make any other way (because if they can't get it legally, they wouldn't have it at all) i would probably do it myself.
i say: let's not only boycott them. burn them on a stick!
the industry created piracy, by developing better and better means of making copies. they didn't really think, that all those empty cdr(w)s, dvdr(w)s and recorders would have sold so good, if they were used for backups only? i mean, common, who really creates so many backups?
on the other hand they take extra money for every piece of hardware, you could possibly copy copyrighted material anyways. so they create a whole industry make billions and then criminalize their customers only to get more money by suing the shit out of them?
it's like lockheed martin sues anyone who kills someone with their "products". i really wonder when they start cinema ads, where they tell you not to use a weapon to cause harm and everyone who does is a criminal!
i think of this of one of the best rpg's ever created. there wasn't much emphasis on quests as such, more like: there's that one thing you'll need to do and some of the side quests were merely obstacles in your way.
so the main quests was, to get out of the dungeon and YEAH, you've had learn those friggin dungeon map by heart, or you'd constantly go in circles. i just love all those tiny secrets. the well hidden buttons, or the illusional walls. i've never bothered to use any cheats or walkthroughs and thus, the game still holds mysteries for me today and i think i've played through it 20 times or more.
eob2 was great too (while eob3 really sucked hard) and the puzzles were harder than ever, but i think no other game had so much impact on me than eob1. i'm still playing it today from time to time.
this type of game becomes a rarity. today you've got automaps, log and questbooks. there's virtually nothing left to do any more.
i don't think so. most people are just ignorant or not flexible enough in this respect. most of the time i suggest a switch, i get answers like:
- why should i, xyz still isn't working, - i don't have time to learn to operate linux, - linux apps crash more often than it's windows counter parts, i know it from experience, - i won't be able to open document abc from my co-worker -...
even after hours of debating and telling them to help them in every respect, you'll only get a "ok maybe we can do this someday" only to be never asked again. ignorance is bliss.
i think the least tempting argument is "it's free", because they got pirated software anyways. most folks i know, don't even know, they operate on pirated stuff. they just got it from "someone".
i can think of a huge interview with carmack before doom3 went live, when he said, that the doom3 engine will be "about his last new engine". all the follow ups will be improvements only from that on, because there won't be anything groudbreaking to do. yet the article speaks of a "new engine" in it's intro. so, is he working on new groundbreaking stuff or not?
i played a female human warlock in wow, but didn't get much more attention than i got with my male human paladin. maybe i made too obvious, that i wasn't a real woman.
my girlfriend even played a night-elf, f, hunter. It was only during the early stages of the game, when many of my guildmates didn't know her (and her relationship to me), and tried to help her more than they would have helped any of our male newcommers. the interest pretty much faded very quickly, when they realized, that she wasn't very interested in them or their help. maybe it was because auf her attitude of rather questing alone or with me, than to flirt around with our guildmates. who knows, if she would have played her cards better, maybe she'd be rich and famous / wanted now? but then i would have made her quit playing, i guess.:P another possibilty could be, that they just started to accept here as an equal after some time.
actually the "average face" holds more bacteria than ANY any of your other body parts. toilet seats are a. too cold and hold b. too little nutrient solution for bacteria to feast on. so if anything you need to be disgusted of your face. i bet keyboards are only dirty because we constanty touch our face and then the keyboard again!
next to that, i very rarely become sick, when staying at home infront of my pc. maybe it's like with folks that live on farms. they usually do have quite good immune systems.
came to my mind instantly after reading the first two paragraphs. Even though they believe in gods, it's more like a pagan mysticism than anything magical.
What makes the game good: - Neat (not too special) story line - Tons of nice side quests - Quite nice voice acting - Some neat puzzels - Rememberable locations (the old but pepped up engine put to good use) - Few loading screens (teleporting) - Enjoyable difficulty - Pets!
The major drawbacks are: - Linearity - Lack of strategic combat handling. - Buggy pathfinding - Stupid AI - Badly scaling engine (got a gforce 6800gt, amd64 3500, 1gb ram and it lags like hell on large scale battles) - Ugly textures on closeup and the heroes look like shit most of the time, especially casters. - Total ripoff of known titles (diablo, nwn) - Teleporter animation: YEARGH!!! - Music featured by the usually genious Jeremy Soule tends to be annyoing in times, especially in the town Aman'lu.
of Star Wars IV. the sequels woulnd't be that nice without him, but he really MADE the first. actually he perfectly blended into that role and made my day. it's all about Han Solo.
another aspect were the perfectly cool models, puppets and masks. screw that damn digital age, i hate every inch of computer made special effects unless they support the scene to make it more believable. star wars just became a cartoon and a bad one too...
i can only join forces with so many here. it's _very_ old (there was a post in gentoo otw forum half a year ago or so) and it's really not a very good comparison.

also: there's still open ttd, which still rocks.

why not use something everyone can enjoy in the first place, or make it customizable?

i was very happy with the d2 release. i think they patched it to death.

you never have played any of those two games have you?
if anything diablo is a mixture of mainly GAUNTLET and rouglike.

I'd say John Carmack is badly missing there. He's been trendsetter since years.
