    They aren't just mount points for volumes. You can mount a volume to multiple places with junctions. You can also use a junction to link C:\temp\directory to X:\anotherplace\asubdir\destination.

    The pain (or feature) with junctions is the source directory doesn't have to be empty. As a System Administrator in the Managed Storage group this can be an incredible pain. If the destination points to another drive you don't want to include it in the backups since things will get backed up twice (since the os would see C:\temp\directory as on the C:\ drive and on the X:\ drive) so the best way to handle that is exclude it from the C:\ drive backup. The problem with junctions is if there were files in C:\temp\directory before you linked it to the directory on the X:\ drive you will see a bunch of files - some on C:\ and some on the mount point.

    Not surprising.

    You have 1144 2.4 GHz CPU's in the old cluster.
    You add 250 dual 3.4GHz Xeon blade systems.
    You also have an increase of 50% in performance.

    That means that 250 of the new systems is roughly equal to 572 of the old systems.

    If they are single CPU 2.8 GHz P4's that mean it's just 250*2 = 500 3.4 GHz CPUs to 572 2.4 GHz CPUs. Or a 14.4% increase in performance per CPU for the upgrade of 2.8 GHz to 3.4 GHz (a 21% increase in CPU clock speed).

    The best advice I can say, is never faulter. If you allow yourself to fail once, then it is opening the door and welcoming failure in the future.

    With any practice of conviction (such as not wanting to have sex before marriage), I find that if you make a decision while you are level headed (no hormones or addictions to please) and put that thought into your mind when you find yourself tested by temptation and find your decision wavering you can always go back to the thought you had before and know that in an emotional state you don't always make the right decisions.

    For me, this works. Anything that I decide to change in myself I always do cold-turkey. For others, I know they can't do it this way. Good luck to you.

  15. Re:Nonsense. on Cheap PPC Linux Machines From IBM · · Score: 3, Insightful

    I'd like to recommend a Mac OS X program for you: CodeTek VirtualDesktop.

    It adds the following to OS X:
    => Virtual Desktops (up to 100)
    => Edge flipping between desktops
    => Hotkeys to switch between desktops (I have it be the same as my Enlightenment settings)
    => The ability to handle individual applications differently that normal settings
    => Focus follows mouse

    That does not address all of your concerns of course, but it does make using OS X a little more like a real Unix system.

    Personally I like the CMD-C, CMD-V to copy and paste. I always have to stop myself under other Unix systems from copying a URL I want to view, going to my browser, selecting the URL and pasting the first URL overtop. You can't do that on more Unix system because it'll copy the URL you are trying to paste over automatically. That was one of my pet-peeves with I work in 100% Linux. For you, it's the reverse.

    As for your points, 1, 3 and 4 are handled by CodeTek Virtual Desktop (I particularly enjoy 3, I have a desktop for each task that I have, browsing, instant messaging, e-mail, etc...).

    For number 6, I use the shell, I use Perl, I use Applescript and I use bash (sometimes I'll use C or C++ too, depending on what I'm doing). I can't think of what I did under Linux scripting-wise that I can't do under Mac OS X.

    For number 7, I actually will load up KDE or TWM on one of my desktops if I want the nice classic feel (this also gives the same feel for your number 2).

    Oh, yeah, I couldn't think of anything to help you with number 5 - I couldn't find it :-)

    I'm not trying to say 'You should use Mac OS X', but I would like to think that people shouldn't discount it because people think that Mac OS X is just simplifying Unix by removing features. I find that all it takes is a little looking around in order to find how to do what you want on OS X. I now work 100% with OS X. My OS X, although is still had the aqua theme (which I can get rid of) it doesn't look at all like a normal OS X workstation.

    For me, I have found that with enough poking around I can get a system to work for me whether its Linux, OS X, Windows or BeOS. I found that Linux was the easiest to configure (outside the norm) - even more than OS X (that was much easier to configure within the norm).

    That's just my $0.02 CDN.

    I find that's the biggest problem in the high tech sector - unless you buy very expensive technology and pay for the support you will likely own the product longer than it's supported.

    Some companies are a little better than others when it comes to supporting older products. A quick check of ATI shows they still have very old driver (EGA/VGA cards) available to download.

  19. Only arcade I know that really works here.... on Japanese Arcade Scene Still Going Strong · · Score: 1

    The only arcade that I know that really works here in Ottawa is at the University of Ottawa. The games are $0.25 to play, the pool is $0.75 per game or you can rent a snooker table or ping pong table for $5/hour. For students this is much better than paying $1 per game like is common at other arcades in town. The arcade is owned by the student organisation.

    The most popular game there is Soul Calibur 2. It's a great arcade game since we all compete against each other. I'll go in and (after waiting for 5 people who were in line before me) log in, see who's fought me and then go and pick on a friend of mine and hopefully help out my team to conquer the world (in the game that is). This is probably the best thing - 150 get together and compete in a tight knit group. It's not as big as the internet (less dealing with crap) and it's bigger than the average group of friends (for an engineer).

    Because of this one game only we have noticed quite a fair share of Carleton University (the other university in town) students show up and compete against us since their arcade is $1 per game and $1.50 per round of pool.

    A nice touch is the jukebox that people can select their music from - $0.25 per song and is usually cued up with a couple songs. if you don't like that's playing you go over and cue up some that you do like.

    All and all, it's a nice place to hang out - not good for the grades though. I doubt that they make a lot of money from it (in comparision to other arcades) but it's almost always full.

    Oh yeah, there is couches all over the place too with coffee tables - a great place to do ones homework. I just wish there was a similar place to my house - the key being CHEAP video games that involve interaction with other people or there is no difference than me playing video games home alone.
