I've reached a point where I don't think NASA should be in manned space flight or commercial launches.

I think that it should either be shut down or just focus on unmanned scientific missions and some basic materials and propulsion research.

Let the commercial sector do what it does best, take risks in money making ventures. Though we do need to keep the tort lawyers out.

Fold manned space flight and other such ventures back into the DOD where they make sense to pursue in national defense. They will take the risks that NASA can't stomach.

One experiment, ICECAM, relied entirely on a 5 kg pack of lithium thionyl chloride batteries. The batteries had to provide power for a year, so minimized the power consumption of the computer. The experiment only needed to take data every two hours, so we built a CMOS oscillator to power-up the computer for 30 seconds every two hours. We used MS-DOS 6.22 for the PC/104 computer since it boots quickly and was able to average 10 frames from the CCD camera and store them to CompactFlash disk.

But Slashdot is not really the place for this.

Slashdot is turning me off more and more these days. I find myself drifting towards fewer and fewer articles and it seems the quality and usefulness or postings is dropping.

Don't encourage this departure from Slashdot's original focus. There are plenty of forums for the uninformed to blather at each other... please don't make this one.

This article should be pulled and someone should start rethinking the editorial policies.

  19. This is not the censorship you are looking for... on British Telecom Blocks Access to Child Porn Sites · · Score: 3, Insightful

For those of you that think this is a slippery slope censorship issue, think again.

What you are trying to do is link the relationship between free speech and censorship to BT's actions.

What do you think free speech is? Your right to say whatever you want whenever you want wherever you want and make someone else pay to distribute it for you? If so, you have no idea what free speech is.

Free speech is your right to have an hold unpopular ideas and convey them (at your own trouble and expense) to others if you wish.

You cannot use this right to abrogate the rights of others. So you can't libel or extol the use of violence against your fellow citizens. You also can't steal from others by forcing them to pay for the distribution of your ideas.

BT has every right in the world to engage in these actions.

This article is not about the government suppressing ideas that it does not like. That's the only censorship that is truly dangerous.

This is a private company. They can block what ever they and their shareholders wish. They are in the marketplace of ideas and goods.

If it really bothers you, then compete with them.

But don't try to tar and feather them with the misuse of poorly held ideas.

    What utter nonsense.

Life and conflict are not static. There will always be evil men that will steal and kill. Life will always be a struggle because value is created through effort and a proper philosophy of life is not innate. It must be developed and nurtured.

And if you don't think Philosophy matters, just look at the difference between societies dominated by the gift of the Greeks, Reason. And those societies that have forsaken reason for knowledge via faith/religion.

It will always be necessary to fight to protect the good from evil. You may want to roll over and take what comes and hope that you survive it... but that just makes you mentally weak and a coward. There are those of us that will fight/kill/die to protect reason and the fruits of our labors. And there will always be the parasites that will benefit from our efforts and work to undermine it because they are stupid, cowards, or worse.
