Sure enough, when I swung by to take a peek, it turned out the idiot from Comcast had just neglected to actually connect either the component video or HDMI signals that were coming out of the cable box. I can't imagine what the installer could have been thinking, except that perhaps he simply hadn't been trained on the actual use of HDTV. It seriously concerns me that this happens all the time.

The risk of accidentally executing a file from the internet is mitigated by a few other things:
    - Something you download from the internet won't have its execute permissions on.
    - Most applications need to be in bundle form, which means you have to transmit them in a zip archive or something, so you have to consciously unarchive them.
    - OS X pops up a warning the first time you run something you downloaded.
    - Even if you do get something running, the superuser is turned off, so the worst that can happen is that you lose all YOUR files... the system should be okay.

Agreed. While I'm normally pretty quick to get mad about religious groups holding up the implementation of new technology, this is an exception. The .xxx TLD is a painfully stupid idea.

There is no reason the Internet needs to create discriminatory domains. Would anyone seriously argue that there is a shortage of porn-related domain names? To use an infamous example, does anyone think whitehouse.com would have tried to get whitehouse.xxx instead, but was forced to use the .com address because they had no other TLD available? This wouldn't prevent domain squatting by pornographers; they only squat at places you're likely to go to accidentally. National laws requiring pornography providers to serve only on *.xxx servers means that the entire legitimate industry would be monopolized by whoever controls that TLD. So now you're punishing the legitimate pornographers and supporting the bad ones. Using *.xxx blockers to shield children from pornography simply won't work; history and human nature suggests porn on the other TLDs won't be going away, ever. The entire concept of naming a TLD after a movie rating doesn't make any sense; why are we standardizing a form of censorship into DNS?

In fact, the .xxx TLD seems like an idea absurd enough that only a religious zealot would think it up.

While it may sound like falling into the pathetic fallacy to call a gene "bad," there are many traits which are almost certainly highly genetically dependent that most people would rather not have. Not just rare "genetic disorders," either. Is there really any function for myopia, for instance? What about colorblindness? Both of these conditions are very common and almost certainly very genetically-influenced. Given a choice, no one would want to be born knowing they'll need eye correction at some point in their life. Can't we just agree that genes which cause this kind of condition are bad?

Why not the EU or any other number of countries that don't have despotic governments?

Because frankly the EU doesn't have any legitimate complaints. There's nothing the EU has tried to do that that ICANN has stopped them from doing. The same can't be said for Iran and China, who have tried extremely hard to eliminate the existence of subversive web sites. ICANN impedes their ability to do this.

There are two big issues Europe is really worried about. Firstly, Europe wants to eliminate the IETF, because it embarrassed the ITU in designing the Internet when they could not. The fluke of the Internet de facto standards doesn't fit well with Europe-based organizations like the ITU and ISO, who would rather control those standards. Secondly, European politicians probably want to cash in on the current "Americans/Bush sucks" attitude felt by an overwhelming portion of the world, so they're using this time to their advantage.

Not to say that the US and US politicians wouldn't do the same thing in these circumstances, but the idea that there's something remotely noble about this sudden, global anti-ICANN movement is absurd. There is no reason to believe the ITU or whoever else gets control of domains wouldn't give VeriSign (or someone worse) control of .com anyway.

Mentioning China and Iran seems like a lame attempt at scaremongering

I can't imagine why everyone is suddenly so defensive of the ITU. This entire move to "take back" the Internet seems to be their delayed mechanism for dealing with the failed ISO/ITU Open Systems Interconnect, which was essentially killed by the IETF and TCP/IP. Unable to accept these new organizations (IETF, ICANN, etc.), they have decided to hijack the Internet through political maneuvering. Unbelievable.
