    Looking closely at this picture, it seems like the computers were old 386 era systems. They were probably broken all ready, not really worth the time to fix them. Then again, they probably all broke once Windows 3.11 was installed on them... ;-)

    Any business that has a "non-techie" building their network is inviting a whole lot of trouble
    The sad part is, many buisnesses have managers running the IT department who have NO technical expertise. Through my work, I deal with "sysadmins" who wouldn't know the difference between a pppoe DSL connection and one established with a static IP. If we in the tech community want to promote wireless security, we need to have it so security and encryption is a simple as a message box saying "Do you want to secure [insert device here]?". Otherwise, networks will simply not be secured.

    I remember seeing this article about mapping where spam comes from, but I've never been able to find out information on how effective spam is in terms of sales. While most spam mailers boast large email lists, they never seem to say what the financial return is. Are there any /. readers out there who are sucessfully using spam as a marketing tool for their company? Or are the only ones getting any money the spam marketers themselves?

    Microsoft looses money on every xbox sold. They recoup their money from game sales. That's why microsoft is so concerned about people using mod chips+linux on the xbox, because they will end up loosing money in the end.

    A computer has no ability to learn from mistakes? Is that so?

    If computers can learn from mistakes, then how come my Win98 box keeps making the same kernel32.dll error? I can't even begin to imagine the code needed to make Windows learn from it's mistakes... likely an order of magnitude higher than the computing power needed for chess... ;-)

    3) WinAmp has a nifty double-size function that makes it quite usable on the TV. I don't know if XMMS or any of it's ilk have this, though.
    XMMS does support doublesize, and WinAmp skins. From a GUI perspective, XMMS is almost identical to WinAmp. If you surf over to the XMMS Misc. Plugins page, you will see a wide varitey of plugins sutible for what you need to do, including command line interpreters and remote control interfaces.

    Just put up a website about how you hacked a [insert crazy tech device here] and managed to get linux running on it. Have Slashdot run a story about it on the homepage, and if you can handle the rush of traffic, then who cares if you really have a T1?

    They had an ad in the banner for Opera. I simply clicked it and grabbed the URL. I think they only wanted to target current users.

    No, they get 75% off (0.5*0.5). I paid 20$ for 2 keys (one linux, one windows) for 10$ each.

    However, one thing in Opera's favour is that they are very reasonable in their pricing. Right now they have a 50% off promotion, and if you are a student you get further 50% off. How many other companies offer such large student discounts? I find this very competive, and worthwhile for a browser that I can use on a P100 with 32mb of RAM without a hitch.

    The 9 states want other companies to be able to replace Internet Explorer / Media Player / etc with their own products. Would the end user be able to do the same? Could I download the Opera display engine and replace the IE engine? Freeamp and Media player? Or would this be only availible to the large software companies (AOL and Real)?

    Disk 1 is one of the NHL series from Electronic Arts. Probably NHL 2002. If you look closely, you can see the NHLPA logo.

    Netscape steals a design feature from Microsoft, adding a pop-up e-mail alert to your system tray.
    Netscape first included the feature in Communicator 4. Look for nsnotify.exe(Windows) in your install directory and run it. It will put a mail icon in the systray that will check for email at set intervals.

    If consumers stopped buying the fastest and the best, programmers would be forced to truly optimize code and reduce bloat to increase functionality in their programs. It might be a good thing if the pace of hardware upgrades and speedups went down for a while...

    In the recent 2001 budget, not nearly the amount of money required for the broadband access program was given. The target date has now been shifted to the end of 2005. Check out this CBC article However, our government has still been more supportive of broadband then others in the world.

    As I understand it, any files put on a CD to use in a computer would be in some sort of secure WMA format. I think the key is that that it would be Windows Media Audio. Does that mean that the included files would only work on Windows systems? Could you be forced to upgrade WMP and Windows itself just to play the extra content? Not only could this sort of thing increase the MS monopoly by shutting out Apple, Linux, etc, it could force the user to spend extra money to use something that they already own!

    Out of all of my years of surfing, the only ad that I have clicked on was a ThinkGeek ad at the top of Slashdot. Why? It looked interesting, and it didn't block the content of the page. It didn't block any links, it didn't play any sounds or music, it didn't even spawn countless popup windows. It just took me to the site. Why go to CNET and be forced to look at some Windows XP ad when I can go somewhere else and get the information and news that I need right away, with no delay. I don't mind seeing the typical banner ads on a page. What I do find to be annoying is when the ads become the main focus of the page, and when they become more important than the page's content.

    Several years ago I worked with a recent Chinese immigrant in learning English and computers. We combined learning the basics (word processing, how web browsers and internet work, file managemnet, etc) with learning English. If you're working with new immigrants, then you will probably also have to make sure that you can teach them in a way that they understand. Don't under estimate their intelligence, just keep the language simple. They will then learn English as they learn about the computer (graphic oriented OS's are great that way).
