  1. And to think... on Canadian Theatre Chain Sued for Abusive Search · · Score: 2, Insightful

I saw a guy walking out with a camera bag when I was leaving The Simpsons last weekend. Clearly, we have an Invasive Search Gap with our neighbor to the north.

  2. I never thought I'd feel bad for MS. on Next Generation Zune Coming for Holiday Season · · Score: 5, Insightful
But I suspect by the time Zune is worthy of the "iPod Killer" moniker, Apple will have already killed the iPod themselves. Sure, they'll still be selling dedicated DAPs for a while to come, but I wouldn't be shocked if a midrange "good enough" iPhone changes the playing field there. Exactly what they did before with the mini/nano. One thing I find admirable about the new Apple is that they don't seem to give a shit about cutting into their own installed base with a product that fits the market better than what they had before. By the time MS gets this right, *the market they're after is going to liken the standalone DAP to monochrome displays and 200 songs.

*no, slashdot is not this market. I know.

  3. Maybe an age thing? on Where the Wii Fits In · · Score: 4, Insightful
This is probably like throwing gas on the fire, but reading through these comments (in every Wii related thread), I have to wonder how many of these hardcore gamers (as defined above) were alive back when everyone played video games? That video gaming ever got relegated to people sitting alone for hours in front of their TV, mastering arcane sets of commands on increasingly complex controllers seems like a sort of failure for the industry in a historical context. I mean, you used to have long lines and large crowds of people from every walk of life playing video games. No convenience store was complete without a video game. "Pac Man Fever" was a novelty radio hit because everyone knew wtf Pac Man was.

The first thing I thought when I saw the Wiimote was how every arcade game I'd seen at bars in recent memory A) was based on something familiar to non-gamers (those fucking golf games), and B) had abandoned the joystick/multiple buttons control scheme. Nintendo may risk losing the basement dwellers, but it's a really smart bet on their part.

  4. I'm dubious. on Marvel Studios to Produce Its Own Movies · · Score: 4, Insightful
    1) My first reaction was that this was a good thing. One of the reasons Spider-Man is roundly regarded as the best of these movies is because it stays reasonably close to the source material. I just saw the new Fantastic Four movie and was left with the impression that they didn't grok the fundamentals of the series at all (Most notably in the abso-fuckin-lutely retarded "reimagining" of Dr Doom, one of Marvel's strongest characters ever...anyway).

    2) But then I realized that it was Marvel's insistence on including Venom that ruined the last Spider-Man. The first two probably came out so well because Raimi himself was a fan, and probably understood the heart of the characters better than whatever goons are currently running Marvel.

    3) Then I realized just how long it's been since I bought a new Marvel Comic (decades) versus how often I read old Marvel comics (weekly).

    4) Crap.

I sometimes wonder if Cory and Xeni Jardin have hit on some sort of self-satirical performance art, and we're just not in on the joke.

  8. Re:hmm...so what? on The Principles of Beautiful Web Design · · Score: 2, Interesting

As a design student myself, I'm going to let you in on a secret: graphic design attracts a lot of really uncreative people, and this is why we're continually assaulted with bad graphic design. Don't get me wrong, there is really really good design out there, but only at the very top end do they crossover into "artist" territory. Sad but true. Now, what would be really interesting is someone with technical ability working in concert with an actual fine artist to produce the type of stuff designer largely half ass. Unfortunately, designers have wedged themselves in between the two fields.

Say what you want about this kid's motives or lack of discretion, but the thing that struck me while watching this was that nonviolent protest (poorly represented or not) is truly dead in America. The widespread and almost casual use of "non-lethals" in these situations clearly goes beyond their intended purpose. Well...ostensibly intended, anyway.

  12. wow, and only 8 years later.... on How Would You Usurp the Web Browser? · · Score: 1
Wasn't the web browser supposed to die in like, 1998? Substitute "push media" for "Web 2.0" and its the same old song. While we're at it, lets usurp the WIMP interface metaphor and bring back VRML. Anybody have one of those pets.com mascots lying around? We can have a theme party.

I'm sure I could find ways to put something like this to good use eventually, but my first impression was "holy fuck, thats cluttered".

  20. We should all be relieved! on NSA To Datamine Social Networking Sites · · Score: 1

I mean, the NSA is only going to target those goofy social networking sites, right? I mean, I can't think of a reason they'd want to data mine and cross reference the membership of a technology site where the average user is not only technically skilled, but also tends to lean toward non-standard politics. I mean, all we talk about here are things like encryption, the NSA, military hardware, robotics, and...okay, Wii. But don't think for a second that NOBODY can link you back to who you really are from here, and a body like the NSA would find /. a place of interest.

  24. Nah, I think it's a pretty shrewd move. on Apple and Nike Team up for iPod Shoe Interface · · Score: 3, Insightful

On both their parts. While joggers might not be a huge percentage of total mp3 player sales, I'd bet almost everyone who jogs anymore either has or plans to buy one. Apple may have just swallowed them all up. The data tracking function is probably a much bigger deal to those types than lardasses like er.. us realize. Nike gets to sell people another pair of overpriced shoes (probably moreso than usual) and horn in on Apple's brand recognition. Nike might be big in the shoe racket, but those Nike branded Phillips players didn't exactly take the world by storm.

Then we should credit Andy Warhol as the father of "Web 2.0". I'm not a huge fan of his art, but I think this prediction accurately sums up such diverse phenomena as MySpace, YouTube, Bubb Rubb, reality TV, American Idol, and All Your Base. Whodathunk we'd actually see this come to pass?
