I'm at the movie theatre the other day and in order to skip the lines at the ticket window I thought I'd use the "ticket ATM" instead. But when I walked up to use it, there was a debugging message on the ATM with a bunch of error codes and some text indicating that it was powered by WinCE.
Therefore to buy tix to the movie, I had to go to the ticket window instead of using the automated solution.
Thanks to WinCE (and M$), the theatre loses as they spent $$$ on a device that doesn't work.
Ah, yes. The Tattered Cover has a special place in my heart because that's where I got my first copy of Linux.
Same feeling here (special place in my heart) but instead of Linux, I was surprised to find that they STOCK the book The Emperor Wears No Clothes by Jack Herer.
1) It is my understanding that according to historical data (and extrapolating the trends), the earth is supposed to be getting colder right now - instead, we're warming up [due to more CO in the atmosphere?]
2) The fossil fuel industry thinks this is a good thing - see http://www.greeningearthsociety.org/
If there were 100 people in the World, there would Be....
57 Asians
21 Europeans
14 from the Western Hemisphere, both north and south
8 Africans
52 would be female
48 would be male
70 would be non-white
30 would be white
70 would be non-Christian
30 would be Christian
89 would be heterosexual
11 would be homosexual
6 people would possess 59% of the entire world's wealth,
and all 6 would be from the United States.
80 would live in substandard housing
70 would be unable to read
50 would suffer from malnutrition
1 would be near death; 1 would be near birth
1 would have a college education
1 would own a computer
I just ran some numbers on one of my more heavily traffic'd sites and come up with 0.479% of my visitors using Linux. That's more like 1/208 visitors using Linux. [Better than the 1/400 visitors mentioned elsewhere here.]
Just in case someone out there doesn't understand, THIS is what the Information Revolution is all about. IP (intelectual property) and information in general, wants to be free - but the people that make it need to and deserve to be compensated. Unfortunately, the current business models and laws don't work.
I myself don't have a crystal ball - thus I don't know the outcome - BUT - THIS is what the Information Revolution is all about. [go back and read up on your Toffler]
Yesterday morning, Bill Gates was on the Regis show and I would like to share a direct quote which he said in reference to the idea that WinXP doesn't crash as much as other windoze OS's.
"The average user will save about a week a year."
[When I shared this with a friend, he replied, "Someone should file a lawsuit alleging that Windows was defective and that the licensing was an ineffective waiver of rights because of M$'s monopoly and their collusion with hardware manufacturers to force their product on consumers. I figure that since 1996, Biull G. & Co. have waster about $8,000 of my time."]
> so KDE/GNOME dont even get a chance to play the beancounter game.
More hmmmm...
This got me thinking. CIOs and CTOs have a budget. Money = Power. If these guys no longer were responsible for and recommending the purchase of expensive M$ software and were looking at free (or very inexpensive) OSS software instead, their budgets would most likely shrink as well.
Therefore with shrinking budgets for IT, they would lose (personal) power and prestige in the boardroom.
> One of the tenets of the web one which I expect most Slashdot readers strongly agree with - is that you cannot control how your site will appear on the user's machine.
Er, um - it's the LAYOUT we can't completely control (and even that we can do things to maximize our control over the presentation) - NOT the CONTENT!!!
I may get the companies wrong - but I heard that CBS never did a story on all of the copycats that hurt themselves after watching MTV's show called "Jackass" because CBS and MTV are owned by the same partent company. [All of the other networks reported these stories.] How about that for censorship and protection of your other interests???
What you have just described here is called *product placment*. The entertainment industry has been doing this for years. Think of the big Coke ™ (or was it Pepsi ™) billboard in the movie Blade Runner - or the Doritos ™ conveniently served at every reward meal on the last season of Survivor. I can think of tons of examples. Pure and simple product placement.
Now I gotta go and call North Face - perhaps I can get a free pack out of 'em for a few strategically placed mentions at http://www.hikingincolorado.org...
I'd be more worried about R/C planes, which can carry more because they generate lift and can be guided over long distances.
Dernit! Now they're gonna outlaw R/C planes!!!
I think a terrorist is more likly to use a pickup truck to get a bomb around.
Outlaw pickup trucks!!!
We need an ENLIGHTENMENT industry!
> Even if Safeway and Blockbuster were both owned by the same parent company, they don't use the same database.
... yet ...
... duck!
Here's a real-world example of WinCE not working.

They aready have (basically) - M$Office for Mac OS X.

So what? Maybe their site traffic will go up but their ROI will only go down as I doubt many techies will actually sign up for their FUD campaign.
Time dialation = proof of relativity(???)

Sounds like the days of old and the Company Store. How long until they start issuing TW/AOL script in place of paychecks?
Although it's not a special, I thought I'd mention that Earthlink just last week started rolling out new DSL services in Denver (static IP).
