  1. The thing to remember... on Only Thieves Block Pop-Ups · · Score: 1

is that the only reason this comes up at all is because pop-ups do not work and people are desperate to lay blame as to why. Just get a new technology already...

Folks who disagree with the parent, watch the ad. It's hard to tell if it's for apple or if it's an anti-drug ad or even if it's a Conan O'Brien-style parody. You keep waiting for her to say she microwaved the baby. She's obviously stoned, question is can you really get that stoned on Benadryl? Consider also that she admits she was only there for the free food in the first place (*cough* munchies *cough*)...

Ask any user who makes the best software and they will have no idea as everything they have ever used has had some kind of annoying glitch/bug/UI flaw. They will probably be quick to say MS makes the worst software because that is what they are surrounded by when they experience any problems.

Right about Enterprise, though - that is just unwatchable. But give it time, they all got better after a couple of years. Except TOS, that got worse.

  7. Re:Getting angry can turn you evil on David Brin on "Attack of the Clones" · · Score: 1

See the thing is, what does luke really know about the emporer? He looked pretty surprised by the lightning bolts to me.

But I guess the point I should have been trying to make was not that of killing=dark side, rather that (as palpatine says), giving in to your hatred and losing control leads to the dark side. Which of course brings up the article's point that the dark jedi didn't seem too hate-filled or out-of-control, they were cool and calm as they dispatched whomever. So I guess lucas is inconsistent in this regard, making the argument moot.

  8. Re:Getting angry can turn you evil on David Brin on "Attack of the Clones" · · Score: 2, Insightful

Yes and it wasn't getting angry that was the problem - doesn't anyone actually watch these movies? The emporer wanted luke to try to kill him, an unarmed old man. Then he tried to get luke to kill his own father. Murderous rage and post-murder guilt is the path to the dark side, just like in real life.

Take UPS, which has a standard policy of only hiring their computer techs (and everyone else) from within if at all possible. Aha you say, I will sign on as a part-time loader or something and quickly ascend the ranks... not so fast, you must first become a part-time supervisor before you can even apply for a tech job. So basically, they want you to spend about 6 months in the trenches in their warehouses, get good enough at backbreaking labor to become a mini-manager, and then if you are fortunate you can compete with the other shmoes for a job that no one in the entire company is qualified for, including you because you spent the past 6-8 months up to your armpits in boxes and shattered merchandise.

    2) Oh my GOD I can't believe how small RI is - and they still get 2 senators. The whole thing should be squashed into another state. They do have the highest population/area ratio of any state, however, so I have to give them that. At 948 people per square mile, there's a lotta livin' going on in RI.

Have bought a bunch of WDs, and most all have had some trouble. Have two 40GB drives that cause the PCs they are in to refuse to boot properly (one won't reboot at all, the other requires multiple power-cycles to get going once it is off). Have an 80GB that is making some nasty noises after only about 8 months. Almost every other WD drive I have had has failed at some point. Why do I buy them? The rebates really bring the price down. Seems like whenever I need one, WD is the only one with a major rebate going on. But no more; the headaches are not worth the savings to me anymore. Since I'm cheap, it's Maxtor for me.

I feel like I should point out that the chance of a terrorist actually taking control of a plane and successfully aiming at a building is now zero. It was zero on 9/11 by the time the 4th plane's passengers found out what was going on. Terrorists would need to sneak in knockout gas or guns with enough ammo to shoot everyone. I doubt if they would even attempt it at this point. Which is not to say they won't be able to come up with something equally devious to beat the system (the shoe bomb of Richard Reid being an example).

this is not geek news. This is only news at all on a Bowie fansite. And just because you like something does not mean I "should be" into it; taste in music is something on which reasonable people may disagree. The posts on this topic prove it is pointless for it to be on this site. People who like Ziggy all post "it rules" while others all post "who?" or "who cares?" messages and then get beaten down by the fans. There is not a discussion because this is not "news for nerds", it's "news for the 1% who are avid fans of a 30-yr old album". And don't say it's relevant because Bowie is aligned with the open source ethic or whatever - I know there was no story when Heathen came out saying you should rush out and buy it to support Our Hero David Bowie. I'm calling you on your bullshit, slashdot.

  23. A dubious lesson on 'White Box' Makers Take Up The Slack · · Score: 2, Insightful

The fact that white boxes are at 45% would seem to me to indicate that the PC market is indeed in the toilet, as they should probably be less than 20% in a healthy market. They aren't doing more business, they are just doing a bigger percentage because the industry's total volume has shrunk.
