E.g. in Germany you can choose your health insurance plan once you earn more than 42Kâ a year. I guess the idea of a compulsory insurance is to have healthy workforce in the country, which per definition earn less.
I believe, this is a function of a corporate structure. Average managers interact to average coders and average HR decide whom to hire or fire. To put it oversimplified: Cool managers and cool coders are entrepreneurs or consultants. The art of an enterprise is how to manage 10000 employees. One can not hire so many cool coders, but a big number is important to reach a quasi-monopoly, and that's where the real money are.
I just had a fellow lawyer at my place, it is Saturday, and he had to spend half an hour talking to his client. He was not really happy to do it on Saturday but probably could not say no. My fellow coders, on the other hand, are not avaliable on their mobile even after 6pm as a rule.
As a side note, I really liked an expalantion of a coder about what he does. He said, coders dream. The deeper they go into their dreams the better code they produce. And talking to all that people just makes them sleep bad, dream less and produce less good code.
May be if you'd think of it a bit longer, you would agree to this view. And then you'll see, you have to have a lot of luck to sell your dreams for 300K.
AIG decided to pay out another $450 million in bonuses. And to whom? To the 400 or so employees in Cassano's old unit, AIGFP, which is due to go out of business shortly! Yes, that's right, an average of $1.1 million in taxpayer-backed money apiece, to the very people who spent the past decade or so punching a hole in the fabric of the universe!
and so on.
The whole article is actually well written and is a informative read.
"I don't know what you mean by 'glory,'" Alice said. Humpty Dumpty smiled contemptuously. "Of course you don't â" till I tell you. I meant 'there's a nice knock-down argument for you!'" "But 'glory' doesn't mean 'a nice knock-down argument,'" Alice objected. "When I use a word," Humpty Dumpty said in a rather a scornful tone, "it means just what I choose it to mean â" neither more nor less." "The question is," said Alice, "whether you can make words mean different things." "The question is," said Humpty Dumpty, "which is to be master â" that's all." Alice was too much puzzled to say anything, so after a minute Humpty Dumpty began again. "They've a temper, some of them â" particularly verbs, they're the proudest â" adjectives you can do anything with, but not verbs â" however, I can manage the whole lot! Impenetrability! That's what I say!"
Generally speaking, if you use words in a wrong sense, you get the wrong result. This is why I have asked the parent about the meaning of the word I know is being misused. It may be he would look it up in the dictionary himself. That may have been an insight for him.
Wheeler suspects that our perceived "time" corresponds to the distance from a special point in the four-dimensional timeless space he modelled. If so, that point might mark the apparent beginning of time at the big bang.
So which exact place in space that point would that be at? Can we all look into that direction and see the god then?:-)
While you are busy looking for this point on Google Sky, let me tell you what article says about the choice.
The article points, that if an experimenter can make his decision in a certain measurement independently from the past events, then the particle`s response is not determined by the entire previous history of the universe.
The speed of transmission of information is explicitly irrelevant to the argument.
and then further:
Although, as we show in [1], determinism may formally be shown to be consistent, there is no longer any evidence that supports it, in view of the fact that classical physics has been superseded by quantum mechanics, a non-deterministic theory. The import of the free will theorem is that it is not only current quantum theory, but the world itself that is non-deterministic, so that no future theory can return us to a clockwork universe.
How exactly is it a specific problem of the liberals? May be you could give your definition of liberals here too? Because by definition I know, a liberal believes in the power of a free (liberal) market or society without regulation or too much intervention from the state.
May be the parent is actually insightful without knowing it himself. One has to take those three and a few others in addition to math and phys to have a broad education.
If we will be paying the flat rate and have access to any content, what role could labels play in this scheme? Will they _not_ sue us, _not_ block modern distribution technology, _not_ steal money from artist etc.? Why wouldn't they just stop doing that right avay and disappeared in a puff of logic?
In other news in Germany a prosecutor has refused to start criminal investigations against private filesharers, as he sees an abuse in the way lawyers use this process to find out the identity of those sharers. The lawyers then would drop the criminal charges and start a civil case where they can earn money. In a criminal case there is not much they can earn. The said prosecutor was himself in turn sued for refusing the cooperation.
How long until the futility and the craziness of chasing and criminalizing of the software will be realized on a world scale.
What can people do? The best would be a flashmob where everybody using Linux in USA would just call the "copyright police" and denounce themselves in one go. So that police realize, what a nonsense it is to run after the millions of better educated citizens for such petty crimes!
Since some time the single most useful add-ons for Firefox for me is "No Script". Next comes AdBlock. The only visibly useful JavaScript stuff to me is the AJAX like Google maps or SugarCRM web-based GUI (Yahoo library).
Local lawyers have already found a workaround for this obstacle. They first open a criminal case and receive the identity information from the police. Later they file the civil case.
It can only make pictures in the bright sun or enough flash illumination. Everything else - impossible noise and smth. like 640x480 effective resolution. Only the case looks good. So I would like to know more about these CCDs, may be the one in my camera comes from Apple?:-)
May be not such a bad deal if you consider, you can forget about storing files, backing them up, organizing etc... Look at it as a service, not a product.
"Open Source" Software and Failure to Comply with Open Source Licenses and Obligations Could Negatively Affect our Business.
To the extent we utilize "open source" software we face risks. For example, the scope and requirements of the most common open source software license, the GNU General Public License, or GPL, have not been interpreted in a court of law. Use of GPL or other open source software could subject certain portions of our proprietary software to the GPL requirements or other similar requirements, as applicable, which may have adverse effects on our sale of the products incorporating any such software. Other forms of open source software licensing present license compliance risks, which could result in litigation or loss of the right to use this software, our ability to commercialize products or technologies incorporating open source software or otherwise fully realize the anticipated benefits of any such acquisition may be restricted because, among other reasons, open source license terms may be ambiguous and may result in unanticipated or uncertain obligations regarding our products. It may be difficult for us to accurately determine the developers of the open source code and whether the acquired software infringes third-party intellectual property rights. We have in place processes and controls designed to address these risks and concerns, including a review process for screening requests from our development organizations for the use of open source, but we cannot be sure that all open source is submitted for approval prior to use in our products.

There are other more obscure paragraphs with "GPL" mentioned, but they mostly say: we do not know what we might be obliged to in regard to third party IP in the USA covered by GPL as well. Rather than saying that they do not have a clue about GPL and that it is evil or something.

apt/adept does the job for me. I even manage to do a full system upgrade with it. Why a binary registry would be needed?

What do you want from the poor retired Bill.
And then have those entitled suing AIG/Government and get the bonuses still plus costs plus damages?

Why are U.S. taxes being handing money to foreigners?
May be because AIG owed them a buck or two?
a a a a
because when women and men see leather it is leather. and a a a , it is (we have not seen Apple Air before) a product.
The reality is though ... a fabricated digital facade, a impression you wish to create of yourself to be viewed by others be they strangers or friends.
