    The source package is far larger than the binaries! Then there's the wait in compiling the damn thing. No (L)User is going to do that. Maybe us geeks (and I do use the source, Luke), but certainly not a "normal" user.

    The problem here is that binary distributions package it all together

    So download the Net installer and choose only what you want?

    Yes, serioulsy.

    The newer, more graphical ones are probably the OS/2's or the *NIX's or something home grown, but them older text only ones go WAY back for their OS. Scary stuff.

    Sadly, I'll have to agree with this. I'm an NT Admin. I make my daily bread by supporting and using MS OS's. I just can't find a gig that'll pay me to Admin (or even use...) a *NIX OS.

    Flame me however you may (not the poster, just anyone who reads these words), but I have to put food on the table somehow, and I have yet to find a way to do that with *NIX. Perhaps I'm not looking hard enough (and that could very well be, but) I have an OK paying gig running an MS shop that is a 10 min drive from my house. That's pretty hard to beat.

    Alhough I certainly do not feel passionately about Microsoft, they are the reason I have a good paying job. It's mostly because their OS is crappy and needs constant support, but beside the point. I have a good job because MS exists.

    Just put in your own DNS info in your TCP/IP settings, and disable the proxy server setup, and there's no issue (minus a packet sniffer, of course, but...). What's the issue? Am I missing something (seriously, that's an honest question, I've gotten around several proxy logs this way)?

    couldnt you get the same effrct with a piece of ply wood and some skateboard wheels?

    Not owning one, but I'll still have to say, I highly doubt it. I would think it requires different code of SOME sort. It ONLY propells itself with it's hind legs, and it ONLY controls direction with it's front. 4 legged animals use all four legs for all of that.
    We humans control our motion AND direction with only 2 legs.

    (no offence to those that may have a physical imperment, of course.)

    I bought this power supply about a year ago. Not only is it as quiet as they tout, it's been a real work horse for me. I have a Lian-Li case, all drive bays filled (from time to time, not constanly ALL hooked up, but...), this thing keeps on running.

    I highly recomend checking these folks out.

    I have switched to Red Hat 8 since Mandrake 9.0 was released.

    Although I've had a few problems with MDK over the past couple years (insane locations for simple things like all the .hidden-mdk-directory type of thing), I'd never go to RH. Call me what you will, but I've tried RH on several machines over the years, starting on 6.1 and up to 8.0 (mostly laptops, but...), it never wanted to work right, and MDK was always there for me to just simply run.

    I haven't tried 9.0 yet, so I can't really comment on it (crappy old CD-R, I can't burn over 650M... :-( ).

    I run Gentoo now, but I'll never stop promoting MDK for the n00b or just simply for people that need a box Just Simply Running(TM).

    P.S. The RH revsa I've tried were both ISO burns and bought CDs.

    One word: SELAND!

    Move the master kernel repository over there. It may not account for everyone's DL's, but at least the master tree will always exist in an untained form.

    I've often wondered if this phrase will change later this century. We gained a Two Dollar Bill in 1976. I wonder if we'll get a Three Dollar Bill in 2076.

    I then have to wonder what happens in 2276. I guess re-create the Five Doallar Bill and repeat the phrase with a Six Dollar? Perhaps, but what happens in 2176? "As crooked as a 5 dollar bill"? D'OH!

    (assuming we're around that long, of course. Look at Rome...)

    IIRC, and I don't have any links handy, it was something like 49 days and it's not that it would reboot. It would just simply stop, as in: -------|
    WALL.
    But that wasn't found out till well after '98 had been out, I think.

    Again, I don't have any links handy, but I can remember listening to the local news radio one saturday morning on my way to get some coffee and they were talking about this.
