Probably I will get modded down for saying this, but why should he care about answering to slashdot ?
What has slashdot contributed to linux ?
It's full of elitist who think they are gods because they can install redhat 7.2.
It's full of idiots who overload kernel.org when there are mirrors in each country.
It's full of whiners who want this and that feature in the kernel yet never contribute even in the form of a simple bug report.
Ok, I _am_ surprised a bit, namely why in hell did he agree to this interview...
Why not just use Debian ?
It's amazing how this technologically superior distribution gets ignored all the time because it doesn't come with (insert fancy feature directed at newbies here).
Also since debian has the most mirrors, it's very easy to apt-get your deb-s in any part of the world.
Those in power always want that the general population be as clueless as possible, so that they don't pose as a threat.
The internet is the worst thing that can happen to many governments - free exchange of information, people educating themselves, etc.
Yeah, but reiserfs was stable much sooner, so all my big filesystems are reiser. Now it would be a pain to convert them to ext3.
I'd choose ext3 for new installations however, if only for the purpose of trying it out and comparing to reiserfs.
I don't think that much advertised compatibility is going to count much. The faster/more reliable fs will be the sysadmin choice.
I have less ambitious goals. It can "almost" run the bridge builder game (bridgebuilder-game.com).. It installs and loads flawlessly, but then when the actual game starts the mouse pointer starts jerking around and I barely can move it because of an unimplemented directx function.
The problem has been known for quite some time, yet no fix has been done. I was going to work on this but then I could "almost" compile wine from CVS. So I've given up on this for a while.
Wine has always been teasing me, but the only succes I had was some primitive midi program for Windows 3.1 and some very small games.
but it doesn't take 6 CD-s to install Debian Woody.
You need the boot floppies and an ftp/http mirror.
What's the point in having thousands of packages you will never install, and are already obsolete at the time of the release on DVD ?
Yet another non-story on Slashdot.
Because there it's usually the big telco-s who are the DSL providers and ISP-s at the same time. And in Scandinavia broadband is also heavily subsidized.

I don't agree.
The only real design here is done by Ken and the Multics Guys.
Linux has just continued the evolution of Unix, Linus and the others didn't really have to design anything major, just reimplement/borrow what works.
yes, and the reason is quite simple, most people don't want to buy a game twice, also the linux version came out much later
it was half-assed attempt at something no one really cared about
I think it's much better to buy a game once and be able to play it both platforms
It's quite possible, look at this pic.
> Oh, and its a 54K yes 54K download
umm, I needed to download 3.25 megs of VB runtime stuff that I don't use for anything else
> Now why Linux companies don't introduct first time Linux users to XFce is beyond me
probably because it sucks ? I've used it and it's as clunky as CDE and missing the configurability of fvwm2 or pwm
I'd choose the more complete kde over xfce anytime, thank you

"I killed BeOS" t-shirt ?
I've always kinda liked the "I killed Laura Palmer" ones.
Think Alpha AXP.
AMD + XP = AXP.
AMD has quite a few features from the Alpha processor, so I guess this is not too far-fetched.
all the time I spent on IRC back.
It was pointless, time consuming and sometimes even dangerous (exploits and all).
Loki didn't port the UT engine to Linux, it was someone from Epicgames.
Just buy more memory kids, it's cheap. :)
I have half a gig and no swap, and everything runs fine and dandy

a company has licensed the source for windows, can engineers who have seen the source work on wine ?

Will someone finally point me to that free beer
open source people are talking about ?
