  1. It's not the language, it's the understanding on How Can an Old-School Coder Regain His Chops? · · Score: 0

Learning a new language is a matter of semantics and punctuation, not logic. I'm a firm believer that once you have an understanding of logic, adapting those skills to other languages is a relatively simple process. A for loop, logically, is the same in C, Java, BASIC, Visual BASIC, C#, AGOL, FORTRAN, Pearl, Ruby, COBOL, or any other language.

I must ask, why is your site down?

You say that it is because you are "editing" your materials...... but ALL of them at ONE TIME!!! You must be kidding me!

If ALL of your editorials are in need of "editing" then it would seem as if your editorials are false or improperly stated.

As for you mission, I am completely against it. Being a gamer, I nee no harm from responsible gaming. Your site seems to pronounce all forms of computer entertainment as tools of the devil him self. I DO agree with your goal of education. Without education, parents would be at a loss in attempting to keep up with their children's computer activities. However, your portrayal or videogames is absolutely and whole heartedly WRONG! I understand that informing parents it your goal, but to correctly inform, you must show both sides of the story. I believe that you need to not only show "horror stories", but also stories of success.

In conclusion, video games are part of today's culture and society, you must understand that. Expecting parents and the masses to follow blindly in your cause is unacceptable. I look foreword to a response from your president of communications, or better yet, a reply from your president.

  15. UI design on Usability and Open Source Software · · Score: 1

I am a highschool junor that has just completed a semester's worth of formal brograming with QBASIC. (I would have rather had C++, but Java is next semester.) From dealing with some text-based UI, I have found that a "useable" and "intitutive" UI is VERY difficlut to pull off.

For example, I just wrote a game of Tic-Tac-Toe. (Which was VERY enjoyable to write.) I made the user enter which square they want by using the number pad.

    7|8|9
    -----
    4|5|6
    -----
    1|2|3

this configuration made perfict sence to my dad and I, but my mom just couldn't understand it! To a programmer, it's easy to decipher what is going on inside the source and modify it to get it to look the way they want.

Microsoft and Apple have experts that do research on what is easy/intutive for USERS and relay thier findings back to the programmers. The comercial UIs are designed for the use by the lowest form of human intellegence. The OSS UIs are almost completely opposite. If you want the text color to be red the user must use some sort of switch on the command line or some other cryptic/strange/unintutitive method.

It would seem like what we need is a very in-depth study done on OSS software UI design. Then, let the programmers know that. Have the programmers code with the user in mind; not a fellow programmer.

(On a side bar, this course on BASIC is my first FORMAL course on a language. I also use C++, VB, shell script, and some RISC assy. I'm not that n00bish.)

I was in China last spring break for a series of concerts. Wheil we were in Bejing, we stayed in the Carey Centre Hotel, which is one of the nicest in Bejing. So when we got to our rooms, obviousy, the 1st thing I went for was the internet connection. Well, It was a little box that looked like a TiVo which had come CAT5 cable coming out of the back and a coax cable to the TV. so we turned it on and..... it ran a chineese version of LINUX! My room mate and I were thrilled and we stayed up all night playing with the thing.

Anyway, back to the firewall, it seems that CNN is accessable by the harvard website on this page

    http://cyber.law.harvard.edu/filtering/china/tes t/ go.asp?URL=http://www.cnn.com

my experiences are that the firewall only blocks certan IPs, not just allows certan IPs. So, you can telnet to your home box, use Lynx to brows the web remotely, and have no problems!

Look ath Final Fantisy: The Spirits Within. It was a total CGI film. The animators over at square studios (R.I.P. square studios) did an amazing job of creating lifelike characters in a convincing 3D world. The production did take years, but it was done. Just imagine, FF:TSW was made aboout two years ago. In a very fiew years, we will begin to see more of these completely CGI movies.

On the note of keeping CGI effects in the background, I agree 100%. No studio is up to the realism level that the camera can capture on the set of a film. Some effects are better than others (like Yoda in episode II), but the majority are not convincing enough to blend in seamlisly with the live action. Untill CGI is integrated without the audience noticing, teep the CGI in the effects department, not with critical characters.

  24. GUI? on GUIs for Everyone · · Score: 1

For me, when i'm in linux, most of what I do, is through the command line. It's simple, fast, and gives you what you want without any of the "purdy graphics" and other stuff that makes doing what you want more time consuming. One thin I CAN'T stand is, under Windows, when the programs menu on the start button shows only your most recently used programs! i know it's a small annoiance(sp?), but it's just SO annoing!

It is ture, however, that GUIs are the best place to start for beginners, but you don't allways need them.

Three cheers for all the users that still like a boring old command line!
