You're splitting angel hairs here. Marx was an athiest. But we can still have a little fun:
Karl Marx dies and shows up at the gates of heaven to be met by Saint Peter.
"Name?" asks Peter.
"Marx, Karl Marx." replies the famous author.
"Hmm," says Peter to himself, "why do I know that name?"
"I am Marx," Marx said, beaming with pride, "founder of socialism and the driving force behind the communist ideal called Marxism."
"I see," Peter said. "I'll have to check with God."
So Peter rushes off to confer with God. God hears the name Marx and immediately a look of disgust infects His face. "Marx?" God says, "He's nothing but a trouble maker. Send him down to hell."
So Peter happily signs the appropriate forms and deports Karl Marx to Satan's fiery hell.
Some time later, a free trade agreement is forged between Heaven and Hell. The deal is hailed by all to be a great economic leap forward that would revitalize both struggling economies. But soon after the treaty, God realizes that Heaven is no longer receiving any products
from Hell. So he sends Saint Peter down to investigate.
"Well?" asks Peter of Satan, "What's the hold up? We have an agreement!"
Satan shrugs his shoulders, exasperated. "It's that Marx fellow," Satan
replied. "Ever since he got down here, all we've had are strikes and labour demands. Productivity has dropped to zero!"
"So?" Peter asks, "What would you have us do?"
"Take him back. Take Marx back to Heaven, and I guarantee productivity will sky rocket!"
So Peter agreed, on God's behalf, to accept Karl Marx back to Heaven.
Some time later Satan realizes that Hell has not received any orders for product from Heaven. In fact, very little communication at all has leaked from Up Above. So, concerned for the economic welfare of Hell, he makes a trip to Heaven.
"Peter! Peter, are you there?" Satan demands.
"Yes, what is it?" Peter answers.
"What's the hold up? What about the flow of trade?"
"Oh I'm sorry," Peter said, "We have decided to adopt a Marxist isolationist stance. We are an intrinsic self-governed body that is now based on the needs of the prolitariate. It is our opinion that this free trade agreement only benefits the bourgeois."
"What?!" Satan was furious. "I demand to speak to God!"
Peter's eyebrow is raised in confusion. "Who?"
A crutch for the weak-minded?

Here are some of the more famous "weak minds" that believed in God:
My first thought is, so what? Microsoft wants to limit access to its network. Dumb move.
Dumb move in the short term, though. But with them ramping up XP, Passport and.NET, maybe they'll start doing things like only allowing software updates via MSN and therefore you have to have their browser.
I don't know. I'm not sure if they're shooting themselves in the foot or shouting "Resistance is Futile!"
My guess is long term, the American and European governments will use this as further evidence in any anti-trust cases.
ABCNews.com and cnn.com are our most important sources of information online
I would have to disagree. Many of the most respected staff at CNN news have left with the AOL takeover. ABCNews has really had the screws put to it by Disney.
Byte for byte, I'd have to say that MSNBC and CBSNEWS give you the best news for the bandwidth. MSNBC (yes, I know, I don't like the MS part either) has the combined power of NBC News and the Washington Post/Newsweek behind it. You can see it with the breadth and depth of their articles.
CBSNEWS, on the other hand, is among the most respected in the industry for integrity and balanced reporting.
Just because a store researches something doesn't mean they're going to make the shopping experience better for the consumer.
Case in point: The grocery store you referenced. Haven't YOU ever noticed that the dairy, bread, and fresh vegetables/fruits are scattered at different corners of the store.
And you know why, to make you wander the other aisles to get you to buy crap you didn't originally walk in to get.
You mention that Linux is decent for browsing, spreadsheets, and word processing. OK, that's nice. But can you imagine if that's all a Mac could do and Apple was trying to market themselves as an alternative to Windows? They'd be laughed off the stage.
Niche programs put the Personal in Personal Computing. I want to run a Visio-like program. I want to run Quicken. Photoshop. Macromedia's products. Blockbuster games. Etc. And yes, I understand that alot of these have Linux equivalents, but damn it, I like Dreamweaver, Quicken, etc. So why should I have to go learn a new program because Linux isn't supported by these programs?
Don't get me wrong. I love Linux and have it installed at home. But for a lot that I want to do, I've got to turn my chair around and fire up my Windows PC. Until these "niche" programs are ported to Linux and there's a unified GUI to support them, well, Linux is not a viable desktop alternative for a "personal computer". IMHO.
First, I don't really think the prospect of 700 people losing their jobs is particularly funny. That's a lot of families and children involved.
Second, I don't think it's very funny that DSL providers are being forced into bankruptcy by the Baby Bells (see this and this and this and do your own searches if you need more).
Laugh if you will, but in the long run, you're going to only have AOL-Time Warner cable (after they swallow most of the cable providers) vs. DSL from your local Baby Bell to choose from for broadband service. And like Coke and Pepsi, AOL and the Baby Bell aren't going to compete on price or quality.
Sorry Katz. A germane defense of the hacker, but your analogies are falling short in modern times.
When you mention the Post and the NY Times in the Vietnam and Watergate eras, it's a false analogy. Today, so many of the large news agencies are owned by corporations with huge interests in government contracts (e.g., NBC and General Electric). The military-industrial complex has become the military-industrial-media complex.
Also, you mention imagining the Washington Post not reporting on Microsoft. Well, recently they have due to the anti-trust case. But they are in legal agreements with MSNBC (peruse the MSNBC site to see how many articles are from Newsweek and the Washington Post (Newsweek is owned by the Post)).
My point? The press ain't what it used to be. The best example: go register an account for Netscape mail then visit the CNN.com site. Know what you'll see at the top of the screen?

That's one of the primary problems in Africa. Many African governments a) can't provide basic services b) squander and/or abscond with the basic natural resources many of these countries have (do a Google search on "Nigeria oil resources theft government") c) continually wage war on one another at the drop of a hat.
Africa's biggest problem is cultural - mostly the concept of "resource sharing", as in, you made it well in the economy, so give me some of it, rather than, you made it well in the economy, let me study how you did it so I can replicate it. ----------------------------------

How can you even begin to compare Russian contributions to America's?
Russian scientific advances, and let's call them what they WERE, Soviet scientific advances, came at the behest of a command and control economy whereby consumers were starved so that Soviet "technology" could compete and shine with America's. Guess what? America created technology AND built a middle class, all at the same time. The Soviets NEVER came anywhere near being able to do both at the same time.
And for 20th century discrimination in America, sure, it happened and still happens. People were denied job opportunities, some people OCCASSIONALY lost their lives due to white on black, Protestant on Catholic violence, etc. But in Soviet Russia (and even to an extent in present day Russia), MILLIONS were forcibly relocated from their homelands and FAWKING starved by Stalin and cronies.
By God, you can't begin to compare the two societies. Yes, the Soviet Union produced technology, but at what an evil expense to people's lives and personal freedoms! ----------------------------------
I'm sorry, but the Chinese have blown this way out of proportion. There was a mid-air accident of unknown origin and they lost a pilot. We lose pilots every month just testing systems like the Osprey.
So what do they do in response? They forcibly imprison 24 of our people. 24 people denied their freedom and separated from their friends, coworkers, and family.

I took note that some of Hollings biggest contributors are the media giants.
Curious though, that they choose a South Carolina senator to sponsor it for them.
Which makes me wonder, is it just that Hollings was an easy buy or cheaper due to the lower standard of living in SC?

My service costs around $50 per month and somewhere I read that $35 of that goes straight to Verizon. That leaves only $15 for Covad and my ISP.
Talk about being screwed by a monopoly. Verizon's making out like a bandit whether they have you as a customer or not.
People have been picking cars for years differentiating between power, features, styling, and cost.
I think they can do the same for PCs.
