HOWEVER, that does not mean that, time and time again, Microsoft as a company has not done unethical, illegal, underhanded or otherwise non-nice things to bolster its position in a given market while supressing the competition...
"Not nice?" I guess I'd have to agree, at least in some cases. "Illegal"? Apparently, given existing law. But I'm not sure what Microsoft has done that I would really consider to be wrong. Bundling the browser? Why the hell not? They wrote the OS, they wrote IE. They are products, and why the hell shouldn't MS be permitted to dictate the manner in which their own products are packaged and sold? Mandatory licensing agreements? Same deal. It's MS's product, if you're a PC vendor, you don't have to buy it - you can sell your PCs with Linux or OS/2 or BeOS instead. IMO, most people's complaints about MS's business practices come down to wanting have one's cake and eat it too - to use and benefit (and make money) from MS's products, but also to be able to dictate the manner in which those products are packaged and obtained. And I think it stinks, frankly. You wouldn't like it if someone were making such demands of your business.
Can anyone say, "ratings"... I mean, on a bad channel, and a bad time... they need something right? [snip] I'll take the Tour over any WB show anyday.
Huh? At least in the New York market anyway, Jeopardy is on WABC (i.e. the New York flagship station of the ABC network), at 7 pm. Not what I'd call a bad channel or a bad time.
the sea of humans around you is a major reason people go to movies
Um, actually, that "sea of humans" is a big part of the reason I don't go to movies anymore. Humans are OK, I guess, but not in groups of more than 10 or so.
There is a sustainable rate, but it's very low. Think of the rate at which current forests are being converted to crude oil.
Well, now, in light of the 6-plus-billion population of Earth, that's not really sustainable either, now, is it?
I say that what will happen in the long term is that, when market forces drive the price of gas in the US up over $3 or $4, we'll start to see hybrids and (cleaner thanks to stricter standards) diesel become popular, and then as it gets up toward $5, the alternative solutions (biodiesel, sugar cane-derived alcohol, hydrogen made with nuclear-derived electricity, etc.) will get more mindshare.
You want to make SUVs more fuel efficient? Raise gas prices to double the current level. Apart from the civil disorder it would cause, I can see people shifting to fuel-efficient cars in a split second. THAT is Capitalism. Voting with your dollar.
That's not capitalism, that's "central planning" / "managed economy" / "government meddling". When the price of oil goes up on its own, due to scarcity, and that prompts people to use more fuel-efficient vehicles, that will be capitalism at work. (And it does work, and has worked before - why do you think Honda/Toyota/Nissan have such a large portion of the US auto market?)
The only downside is that a nuke that fizzled would only anger Israel and produce the combined force of Israel, the US, and many European powers against the perpetrator.
I'd tend to think that a properly functioning nuke would have this effect as well.
To go from Boston to Washington (or providence to Washington, which is a 6 dollar MBTA train ride from Boston) via air is $141 according to expedia, probably on peak travel days. And its a third of the time to fly as it is to Rail.
Does that include getting to and from the airports, checking in, getting stripsearched, etc.? I would guess that, overall, from door-to-door, taking the train from Boston to DC ends up being a wash vs. flying, time-wise (but yes, it can actually be cheaper to fly).
There are a couple of these ranges. One is at the end of the strip (I forget which end) and is run by really safety conscious folks. I learned to fire a MP5 there.
I think you're talking about The Gun Store (hey, that's what it's called) on Tropicana Avenue. That place may well be the most fun I've ever had in Vegas.
I noticed a couple comments on Windows XP Embedded on that website, has anyone else had issues trying to keep embeded secure? You can't run windows update or SUS and service packs don't work. And Cannon won't support any anti-virus software.
No biggie - just don't ever connect your device to, well, anything, and you'll have no problems!
The FTC has considered regulating the oil industry by disallowing any terminology suggesting that higher octane is better.
No, higher octane is not inherently "better", but a well-designed engine will obtain better performance/efficiency from higher octane fuel. For instance, the owner's manual of a "B5"-generation VW Passat (and I would presume most other current VW models that use the 1.8T or the 2.8 V6/VR6 engines, as well as other manufacturers' models, I'm sure) states that a minimum of 87 AKI should be used, but that for best performance, 90 AKI or higher should be used. Modern engines with knock sensors and electronic ignition can vary the spark timing so that the spark fires as close to top-dead-center as possible without knocking. (Firing at or near TDC is desirable for maximum power; firing earlier may be necessary to prevent detonation but causes the expanding combustion charge to work "against" the piston which is still trying to compress the charge, thus reducing efficiency.)
42 percent say they found it less stressful fighting their way through rush-hour traffic than finding legitimate e-mails among the spam
One word for those folks: Mozilla. I have to deal with maybe half a dozen spams a day, out of 50-100 emails. The rest just "softly and silently vanish away".
OK, hah hah. But I've got a Win2K server sitting next to me that has not been booted in a couple of months, and has never BSOD'd. My WinXP notebook at work stays up 5 days a week, every week (I shut it down on weekends) and has never BSOD'd. The last time any machine of mine was successfully infected by a virus was before Windows 95 came out. The only reason for a "sick PC" is total ignorance or extreme laziness.
The important question is, "Is it low carb?"
Well, not if you're a diabetic, I guess.
But it'll be much, much cooler when I can snag $10 or $15 or $75 out of the machine. Why do we get only 20s?
With ATM access fees of $1-$2, why would you ever take $10 out of an ATM? I never take out less than $200 at a time.
It's a bit more difficult to save 10% of your income when you're making $25K/yr and you have kids to support.
Maybe the guy making $25K should've thought of that before he went and had kids. Kids are expensive; condoms are cheap.

By switching to Linux and OpenOffice/KOffice on their desktops.
Hell no, that would cost them $699 a seat!
Seriously though.. What's he going to do with all that money if he can't drink or gamble?
And so close to Vegas, too...

What are you getting all worked up about? Go ahead, make a Soviet Russia joke or a hot-grits joke. You'll feel better, I promise.

I wasn't aware that there was a sustainable rate...

In Sonyet Russia, WALKMAN carries YOU!

Wow, could it cost a little bit more? $3 a ride! $40 for 3 days? No week pass? Mono d'oh indeed.
Gee, $40 for 3 days, yeah, that's terrible. I can drop that in 30 seconds at the blackjack table!
MiG-29 Foxbat
Actually, the MiG-29 is/was designated "Fulcrum". "Foxbat" was the designation for the MiG-25 recon/interceptor.

How many felines are left?
Maybe they're actually naming the versions after German tanks. Let's see if the next one is "Leopard"...
How about going to the wrong webpage?
How dare you imply that I would actually use Internet Explorer! ;-b
