But the extra volume is good for one thing, I can hear the commercials end so I know when to come back from the kitchen/bathroom.
Must be nice to have the power to come back from the bathroom by choice. "This next drop is gonna have to wait a few minutes 'cause I hear The Simpsons coming back on."
People could auction off their karma to those who don't want to earn it the ole fashioned way. Slashdot could take a cut of the proceeds and give it to the free software foundation. Any takers?

It's easy for a dotcom to go bankrupt, but you can't have an online community go bankrupt, unless every developer invested in webvan, Enron, and dogdoo.com.
You'll probably get the sourcecode for Micro-Soft Word v0.9 for DOS 3.0. Keep in mind, though, that even if you got a copy of the source code for Word 2000, the.DOC file format is completely incompatible with Word XP.
I'd like to congratulate the readers of slashdot for a new slashdot record of 2.8 seconds for shutdown. It'll probably be broken when I finish my webserver on a NES.
This is the same theory behind patents. You tell the government how your product works and you're guaranteed that for a certain length of time only you can sell it. When it expires, it's public domain for usage (It's actually public domain information from the start). Patents weren't created just to allow inventors to profit, but to allow anyone access to information and use it after a certain amount of time. But a copyright shouldn't necessarily expire, or it should have a really long life. Otherwise, anyone would be allowed to publish and sell books once they became, say, 50 years old. What is needed is a new copyright system. One where once a product is deemed obsolete or unsupported, anyone can do what they want with it.
The same thing happened to me. My computer became absolutely useless once I saw those first Windows XP commercials. I immediately went out and bought it so I could use wireless networking, Instant Messaging, and CD Burning. I then played some Madonna and flew around while high on angel dust.
Embedded Linux offers a standard kernel but no standard device level application programming interface (API). There are multiple implementations of other major OS components so developers end up working with different programming environments and tools for each device, decreasing efficiency, limiting code re-use and increasing application development time.
I guess this means that it's not good that developers can choose what tools they work with or pick the language best for the application. Not to mention the fact that only having a few hundred thousand developers who haven't had to sign non-disclosure agreements can't help you out in any way.
For example, there are at least five different window managers and at least four competing browsers, increasing programming complexity and reducing the pool of available developers.
And as all of us know, competiting web browsers is BAD!!! SO BAD!!!! Bad enough that Microsoft intentionally broke the law to attempt to stop this. I guess we should all strive to be the same. We should all give way to the Nazis^H^H^H^H^H^H almighty Bill Gates!
All of us who do not like Microsoft obviously do not want.NET and passport to prevail. We have a shot against.NET because there are many alternatives coming out. However, there is no technology competing with passport right now. Microsoft is forcing people who want to use their services to sign on.
Let's consider for a moment how Microsoft has tried to take on the instant messenger market. They've bundled MSN messenger with Windows XP, but many people already have been using ICQ or AIM for years. They won't bother signing up for MSN messenger because they wouldn't be able to talk to their buddies on the other services. But with Passport, there is no alternative around. Sure people may reluctantly sign up for it, but once they have it, they've already gone through the painful process of giving away information. Now they'll be more likely to use other passport services.
But we don't have a good competitor for passport because close to 100% of the slashdot readers, and *nix people in general, don't like the idea of passport. If we don't like the idea, then we won't bother implementing it. Maybe there should be a movement for a competitor to passport. You don't have to use it immediately, or at all. I highly doubt Bill Gates has his credit card number sitting out on those oh so vulnerable.NET servers.
I guess since the Playstation 2 and Gamecube are both listed as having 'closed' and 'proprietary' kernels and the X-box isn't listed that way, windows 2k is open and non-proprietary. Sweet! Ironically, playstation 2 is the only platform with a version of linux ready for it.
I think this qualifies as a good use for an android head. It's a good thing slashdot has given us the data on the subject.
Though I bet if he were to turn his talents to malicious hacking and if he were caught, he would be tried as an adult. Ain't this country great?
You'll love the Britney Spear's Guide to Semiconductor Physics. Who would have thought that learning about P-N junctions could be so much fun?
My shipment of 5000 black eye-patches was blocked because they were ruled "piratical."

...kindly ask that the folks at Amazon turn the thermostat back up.
I could have swore he was talking about Cowboy Neal.
You could think of death as the end of cell growth, whereas cancer is cell growth gone out of control.

Must be one of those British emoticons.
I don't know that anyone has ever asked for the source code for Word. If they did, we would give it to them.
I think "it" is a beating from the Microsoft Secret Dork Patrol.

Both Canada and the United States have both been using the dollar for the longest time.
(Disclaimer: If you can't figure out the fallacy in the comment you shouldn't be reading the comments on slashdot.)

But not as ridiculous as the great frowny emoticon debate. I guess I'll also have to stop writing capital I's and lowercase l's. :-(
Oops.

Then when your hard drive fails, there's a certain probability that it might not have failed, and just back up from a different universe.
